This is a fairly recent song.
I'm quite happy with it, it's as good as anything I've ever written.

I imagine myself as a listener.
To explain in detail, or to spell out the meaning would be to distract from the listening enjoyment,
and possibly come across as patronising to the listener. So I'll not do that.

Many thanks to our very own adamfarr for permitting me to use some of his lines and helping me to find the inspiration I needed. He's a good 'un.

Feedback would be very welcome  ;D

     Alone On The Bridge

   potential was squandered
neglect has turned it brown
   no amount of water
did ever touch the ground

    step away from that door
  and leave those orphaned keys
for all of your fine splendour
  you never found relief
alone on the bridge, you were floating on it
longer than you would like to admit

kill or be killed, if that's what gets you
up on your heels, and running until...

    away from all the noise
    deep in your empty room
 your resurected voice
  serenades a distant moon

   dressed for a funeral
you never leave the house
 with ev'ry passing day
  another light goes out
alone on the bridge, attractions effacing
darker than the quicksand you are chasing

do what thou willt, shall be the whole of the law
. . for loving oneself

back to the bridge, you are floating on it
longer than you would care to admit
      la noche oscura del alma
      Alone on the Bridge

It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

Some really great lines , from the opening verse right through  ..... I particularly like:

"all of your fine splendour
  you never found relief"

and ...

 "your resurected voice
  serenades a distant moon"

Very evocative and quite haunting, nicely done.

Hey hey geeza,

Smashing it man!

Like Kevin said, the lyrics are so good all the way through; that's always great about your lyric - no fillers.

Really, really beautiful words, I'm sure there's few better than Adam to help too. Feels silly picking any out, because they're all strong and work together, but this point in the song is where it hit me hardest.
Quote
  dressed for a funeral
you never leave the house
 with ev'ry passing day
  another light goes out

Classic and unique Rightly vocals which just glide through the mind so softly against the rugged but friendly guitar.

It's amazing really how unique and distinctive you are in so many areas, but still avoid coming across as 'quirky' or 'try-hard'; very natural and authentic. I do wish I could figure out that guitar work, similar to the previous comment it sounds like you're going mental in parts, whilst still very forgiving - must be great timing and rhythm to pull that off.

"You never found relief..."

Said before I'm a massive fan and so very happy you're putting out more of this style.

Keep 'em coming!
Scott.

Yo Rightly.

Your lyrics are always a deep and fast flowing river and this piece is no different.

I know lots of folk who never listen to the words of a song and I always think they miss out on so much. Not to ponder the lyrics in a Rightly song is unthinkable to me. Food for the soul,my brother.  :)

The only niggle I have is,the intonation sounds a bit out on your guitar here and there and it distracts me,I don't think it's a tuning issue, because the bulk of the song sounds fine, just certain chord shapes jar.

Anyway,back to lyric pondering I go.  8)

Great stuff Rightly - so interesting to hear some of my lines here, taken in a direction I wouldn't normally go.

Actually mine aren't really the good ones here - I love all the dark, troubling images and the juxtaposition of the bridge with the character never leaving the house, really effective.

Perfect length and the ending too!

Really glad you like it Alan!  :)

I'm yet to get it down so I can just peel it off live on stage
I'll be rollin' when I can.

Hi,

Your guitar sounds slightly out of tune - was that intentional? As others have said, there are some great lines in here but I think the recording is badly mixed which reduces the impact. It sounds like a demo rather than the finished product.

Potential I think not fully realised.

Hi Rightly, interesting lyrics as usual from you. Very sparse version, which I guess is what you were looking for, but perhaps loses a bit of bite because of that. Your guitar tuning sounds out to me and that detracts from a song with potential!
Nice one Rightly!
Cheers
Jamie

I've been sitting here today, writing about a friend of mine who jumped off a bridge to her death when we were teenagers. So this feels very sad and timely to me, and my memories have obviously impacted the way I hear this.

Beautiful song, Rightly.

Really great lyrics and a nicely performed track. I did notice the tunedness of the guitars myself but then my hearing is terrible. Really enjoyed the listen!!

Sorry to hear of that.
It must have been a terrible time for you.
Teenage years are often terrible.
I'm not sure how so many survive them.

All the best.

Sorry for wasteing your time M.
I guess it comes down to personal taste, this whole recording was intentional.

Have a top weekend.  :)

Hi Rightly.

Love this. It's classic Rightly. I read Scott Levis review and I totally agree with his words so can't really add much more. Great work. Poetic and uniquely you.
