Just so people didn't think I only do comedy songs, here are some ruminations on the psychological perils of meeting up with an ex after 27 years ...

Sitting in a fancy restaurant overlooking the sea,

When a good-looking ghost walks in who’s come to see me

And we hug and we kiss like old friends, sit down, then talk for a while,

Just me and the ghost of a girl I once knew with a snaggle-toothed smile.

And we each have five minutes to recap twenty-seven long years

Takes her seven, takes me less than two, there’s laughter and then some tears

And I wonder if I meant as much to her as she did to me

Then she smiles over the seafood linguine and tells me these memories:

She says, ‘Ploughmans and jazz chords’.

That’s all I was to her:

Ploughmans and jazz chords.

Ploughmans and jazz chords:

Not such a big loss to her.

Ploughmans and jazz chords.

They say the past is a foreign country and they do things differently there,

But I’m talking about a whole continent that went missing somewhere

And this continent’s full of strange young people who I’ve not even met

Wide-eyed with wonder and hope for the future and not one regret.

And the past’s sat right in front of me so I just don’t understand

How I let those years slip through my fingers like grains of sand

And I wonder if I’ve haunted this ghost’s life the way she’s haunted mine

But then her exorcism makes ridiculous what was sublime.

She says, ‘Ploughmans and jazz chords’.

These were her memories:

Ploughmans and jazz chords.

Ploughmans and jazz chords,

With not enough bread or cheese.

Ploughmans and jazz chords.

Though the years lie heavy between us,

They’re so light that they might float away,

Even so it would not take a genius

To see what I mean to you when you say:

Ploughmans and jazz chords.

Not so profound for me:

Ploughmans and jazz chords.

Ploughmans and jazz chords.

Two lousy nouns for me:

Ploughmans and jazz chords.

Delightful.  Beautiful story-telling set to a totally seductive melody and supporting harmony. Exactly as it should be done!

Very cool guitar and some unique lyric lines too (linguine! And lousy nouns...)
My one small nit was that the vocal felt like it was following the guitar at times, rather than the guitar accompanying the vocal (though I’m not a jazzer and that’s a style thing really).
Perhaps a little instrumental break somewhere to break it up a little?
Very well realised though.

Your voice sounds great on this.

Storytelling was Great.

Audio weak in right channel but so what? It’s not a mix

Another really great song ... you really have a great storytelling style and I LOVE your guitar style too.

Very nicely balanced lyrics, poised between being funny and crushingly sad. As has been said, lovely voice and guitar playing. Kudos for a quirky song title that mentions ploughmans. Only thing was on my headphones, it was all coming through the left ear - guess that's just a mic position thing. Nice fire in the background too.
It's all too beautiful.

Thanks for all the kind and constructive comments, particularly regarding my crap recording. As a confirmed technophobe I'd appreciate any advice anyone could give me on the recording front. I'm not looking for anything flash like some of the beautifully produced stuff you guys produce - just me and my guitar doing my thing - but if anyone had any ideas on the most effective way to record that I would hugely appreciate the advice x

Yo Theatreman.

It's a clever song and confidently performed. For my own tastes,I'd like it broken up a little and maybe a minute shorter. Cool/sad lyrical content.

Git yoreself a DAW and the world is yer oyster. You have the songs and you have the musicianship, realise it with a good recording. There are loads of free DAWs out there just waiting for you.  :)

Thanks for that Skub. Sorry to be an idiot but you're going to have to tell me what a DAW is x

A digital audio workstation (DAW for short) is an electronic device or application software used for recording, editing and producing audio files such as musical pieces, songs, speech or sound effects.

It comes in various formats TM,but put simply it's a recording studio on your computer.  :)

It will also shorten your days....maybe years.  :o  :D

Glad you don't only do comedy songs....not my favourite!

This is a nicely played one and the vocal is something that I could only dream of getting close to.

Chorus is nice.

Having said that, and not being any great singer myself, I found the vocal to be a tad overdone/mannered. It's marvellous in its range and dexterity but it distracted me a fair bit from the song itself. When it lays back a bit on the 'ploughmans and jazz chords' part it comes as a bit of a relief...and this is a good part too which helps.

Hope that's not being offensive especially coming from somebody who is a pretty crap singer!

Good song there though.
Take it easy.

You can check my stuff out here. Mini-album getting bigger slowly. Free download if you're poorer than me.
