I know this kinda sounds poncey, but if you can get some drumming lessons, maybe do a few grades, on a real kit that really helps to understand what's possible and how it all fits together, I took the plunge a few years ago, bought a Yamaha electronic kit and love playing it, (I know some of you have rightly picked me up on my rubbish fills and timing...)

It's just that you'll become better at painting beats if you can play a bit on a kit, you don't have to be brilliant, you'll just understand things a bit more, even if you break the rules (as I love to do) you kinda of know why it works.

I know not everyone can afford lessons, nor have the wallop nor the space to get a kit, so I'm sorry if it sounds patronising, it's not meant to be, I'm just trying to help.

One more thing, you'll have more of an ear for what the drummer is doing when you play live...which can work 2 ways....
