Hi All,

Sorry, it's rubbish and it's me singing. This is the 3rd attempt at a song for the comp.

The first called Werewolf Queen was abandoned as we struggled to find a vocal that worked. Katja then went on holiday, which left me the weekend to try and come up with something. Got a vocal this time for a tune called Love Zombie Number 1 - but couldn't find the music.

So yesterday I resorted to form for song 3 - doom and gloom. Bit of a rush job - so the vocal is shocking, the mix not great - but I wanted to take part - so there you have it. Not scary - but dark.

The more I listened I quickly realised I'd rewritten Hurdy Gurdy Man as a death ode - hence the "aka".

Happy Hallowe'en.

Mourner’s Song

Out of time
The morning’s light
Saw it come
Grew numb inside
Life’s last sound
You fought the night
Called your god
Your soul’s grown tired

Watched you slip away
I need you one more day

Death will take you home
No more needless want

Sure in life
The black sails fly
Cuts your heart and
Cuts your mind
It’s always dark
This mourning’s night
Here alone
There’s always time

Watched you slip away
I need you one more day

Death will take you home
No more needless want

You've come up with an atmospheric funereal dirge here Digger.
For me it works, kinda because it refuses to try to please, if you know what I mean... that sombre tempo and the deadpan vocal. I won't be humming it afterwards but that's the point, right?
I liked the effects you deployed on the vocal too, and the synth shimmers added colour amongst the shadows.
It's all too beautiful.

Music from the graveyard - this has a really eerie feeling, from the pedestrian drums that seem to mimic the slow walking of a zombie to the cool vocals which capture a ghostly mournful cry.  Ideal for the dark-side competition.

Well done

Well, I think maybe you're a little crazy. This is definitely not rubbish, and your singing is fantastic. It's dark and heavy, and perfect for your song. It's a beautifully written sad story of loss. I really like it.

That's an amazing song and great performance!

I liked the slight out of tune singing phrases, really brings you to the mood. It's very difficult to make them work and you really made them flawlessly.
Have a great day!

You're too hard on yourself Digger :o I always love the way you sing and it certainly suits the darkness
of this song, and this song is certainly NOT rubbish! It's very heavy and moody and brings some eerie imagery as I listen :o Very good entry IMO  :)

I guess it is just evidence of your high standards when you consider this rushed... ;-)

Still, though your vocals work well in the context of this song perhaps you can get Katja to record some more vocals on top when she returns and lift it to yet another level....

Definitely dark.

ooh...I like this a lot.

It fits the brief very nicely...some great lyrical images in there and your voice suits it perfectly.

Very dark....and a great piece of work.

Yo digger.

Starts off very Floyd, then becomes a kind of slowed down Alice Cooper!

A rumbling boneyard bash of a downer song and I like it lots.   :)

Hey Digger. I think most songwriters would be pretty satisfied at producing a work like this. I got the Floyd vibe too. like Floyd it's a bit indulgent in places but it definitely works. lyrics are quality too. cheers Micky

intro soundscape: WOW ! hope it comes back in the song.

tasteful use of FX on the vocals - kinda scary.

yearning lyrics.

that "church" Piano - wow.

"death will take you home" ? - :)

it s a kinda easy chord progression - but it s SO powerful here. A great thing to achieve; it s really my kinda music; dark and sad and beautiful.

i m impressed

B.

Hi Digs.  Glad you got an entry in. Yours is the last one of the competition entries that I've listened to. What an amazing atmosphere and your vocals are spot on. This has a late 60 s or early 70s vibe to it with Floyd influences. I had a short list for voting but now gonna have to wrestle with it

This is really good.
Production is spot on.
Love how it drags!  ;D ;D
Can see a funeral procession with weird looking people with sad faces.
Perfect fit for the brief here - great job

Hi All,

Many thanks for the kind words.
Encourages me to try and develop it more with a bit of time on my side - and get Katja to add some proper vocals. Not sure what she'll think of it though.

Loads of great entries this year. Hard to choose a top 5.

Cheers,
Digger
