Hello

The killing of Daniel Morgan in March 1987 is the most investigated murder in British history. Described by an Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police as “one of the most disgraceful episodes in the entire history of the Metropolitan Police Service".

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

If you don’t want to have nightmares
you should look away now
all you’d been taught to believe in
will be leaving anyhow
you can sit in your favourite armchair
frantically mopping your brow
at the ritual self-destruction
of another sacred cow

when you seem to encounter corruption
whichever way that you turn
in a car park south of the river
the only lesson to learn
Is that vengeance is fire and brimstone
and only the innocent burn

it’s the long arm that steadies the cradle
and nurtures the darkest of arts
the charade of an investigation
won’t add up to the sum of its parts
make it look like the work of a madman
endowed with the hardest of hearts
and the demon barflies of Fleet Street
were in it all right from the start

If you’re desperate for something to cling to
in the hope that it’s something it’s not
then I’ve got some bad news to bring you
we’re the land that justice forgot
and the bystanders witness the car-crash
of the finest that England has got

Whiskey...Tango...Foxtrot

heart of stone, feet of clay, knob of butter

Excellent as always Paul!

Lyrically brilliant and really well performed. I loved the interplay of the instrument and they way they come in and out of the track and your vocals sit nicely on top. I got no nits to pick with this. Very well done.

Yo Paul.

I hadn't heard of the chap who is the topic of your song,so I did a little reading.  :(

There are so many similar tales where I live. Folk who are above the law and know full well they are protected at the highest level.

Lyrically on the money as ever and all wrapped up in a mournful, confrontational package of socially aware punk. I love the contrast of the 'in your face bass' and the chorus effect on the guitar.

Hi Paul!

Another great song! You have a way of telling a lot with a modest amount of words. The tempo could be a bit faster just to make it a bit more aggressive.

It struck me that writing about a real crime might give me a new angle to this Dark Side contest.

I'll probably learn this one by heart and sing it in a Freddie Mercury fashion. Mostly at home.

Haha, I think I've just got the pun in the title Paul... nice hidden gem.
I liked the octave bass instantly.
As usual from you the lyrics are educational as well as thought provoking.
You've got a great snarl to your voice at times in this too.
I get a strong new wave vibe from the guitar sounds... touches of Blondie.  Bit like Martin I could also imagine it a little faster with an indie disco vibe (maybe that's the Blondie thing coming through, and the octave bass lends itself to having a shimmy).
Will be revisiting this one... Great stuff.
It's all too beautiful.

Hi Paul, I have vague recollections of the story at the time and of course the paymasters made sure it was hushed up. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot has changed over the years says me ? Such a good song I've got it on listen number 3 already.  Great attitude, love the riffs and vocals are just so spot on portraying the story so clearly. Fantastic writing and execution.  :) :)

perfect title
intro works lovely like the keys
excellent lyric and the way you deliver it
tracks kind of compulsive whern it starts and relentless ..in a good way..

your song about david kelly has stayed with me
this has an intensity too
great singing
i may not believe this tomorrow...

Paul, this is great. I'm pretty sure it's my favorite of all your songs so far. I'm so jealous of the opening guitar riff. I want to come up with great bits like that! As others have mentioned, the lyric is very clever. The melody and chord progression is wonderful. I like the whole thing a lot. Oh, and your vocals are just perfect, too. Excellent!

I thought this Dark Competition you got running here would be all kitsch halloween stuff with nothing badder than Dracula on show. Man, there's all kinds of real dark instead, like this superbly told tale.
Some awesome lines dude, I like that Demon barflies of Fleet Street one!
The awkward rhythm reminded me of your British bobbies pounding the beat, somewhere in between Reggaeville and Punktown.

Yeah, great title and a neat ending.I like that lead guitar motif.
The only thing you can take from a story like this is that power corrupts everyone it touches, you and me included. But not your own mom!

The interplay between the bass and the guitar is very clever and extremely effective, driving the whole song. Your voice works really well in the context of the song. I don't actually remember this case, but am about to look it up. Great idea for a song.

Listened through twice, and it's thoroughly memorable too - good job.

Hi Paul,

works for me. Having lived through the 70s and 80s I know the Police are no scared cow. That was the only part of your song that didn't really work for me. Otherwise a very good entry for the competition.

Good luck,

Keith

"it’s the long arm that steadies the cradle" is my favorite line. It's a compelling listen even with no real hook going on - I think it's the instrumentation, and your vocal has an urgency that can't be ignored.

"The land that justice fogot" indeed...

I was compelled to look up the case. Woah. Really brutal. I liked your telling of the cover up. Well written and sung, and stylistically your own. It works.

Very good Paul,

Perhaps not the right response for the topic but the grove of this had me bouncing up and down all the way through.

Good quality production too which I noticed from the off.

I hadn't heard of this guy either but well done for tackling the subject in a song.
