Did a great job with this, Davy...I had a listen this afternoon and really enjoyed it.

You’re bang on the money about rightly’s lyrics...he’s a proper genius in his writing...with a style all his own.

It’s a highly original take on a highly original lyric...how original is that.

I love the groove you’re in at the minute...fearlessly plunging into it like a man possessed  :)

Rightly is an incredible talent and I'm a big fan of his so it's really interesting to hear a cover and boy have you done it justice Davy. You've captured the emotion amazingly well and your vocals just get better and better. You are friggin prolific since you got into this DAW stuff  ;D

Does one have to wait for 2 weeks after posting a song to put one in this thread, or is it exempt from that rule?

Unless I'm wrong,I'd say to treat the thread as a 'free for all'. If I'm wrong we'll be told otherwise.  :D

Well okay then. I'll give this a try.

Inspired by this thread, I decided to cover my good friend Diademgrove's song The Autumn Skye Blues.
We did it on the sly, and surprised him with it yesterday. Luckily he liked it. We went in a very different direction than his original. It's kind of folk on acid. Here it is. Thanks, Keith, for letting me sing your beautiful song.

And here is the far superior original.

The original version is very late 60s Syd a definite hippy vibe.

The cover is very countrified, with just a hint of underlying putrifaction.  :)

Thank you?

What's your issue with it? I don't care if you hate it, but to calling it putrid deserves further explanation.

Nah,I wasn't calling it putrid!  :D

What I was saying, perhaps badly, there is an underlying strangeness that balances out the sweet country aspect of your version. It adds an unknown aspect and perhaps hints at something dangerous.

I have long been an admirer of the feeling and emotion Rightly puts into his unconventional songs and I'm always moved by the depths of his lyrics. It was, therefore, with some trepidation mixed with excitement, that and with his permission,I recorded a version of his song,'All the Best People Have Gone Home'.

I thought to approach the song retaining the raw, stripped back aspect and attempting to make it as angsty and emotive as I could.

I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I did working on it.  :)

As usual I include the original song, then my cover.

All The Best People Have Gone Home

all the best
people have gone home
when I go
I'll not return, I know
well I guess, I'm the next, the here-after-show
all the best people have gone home

a change of
scenery doesn't hurt
it's all about
perspective makes things work (work it out)
like a jealous wind, where am I to begin?
a change of scenery wouldn't hurt

I've made mistakes, one made me think twice
should I die today will tomorrow be alright?

all the best people have gone home

there's no need
to enter like a thief
show me your
hunger, show me your greed
take some more, take anything you want from me
there's no need for you to enter like a thief

I've made mistakes, one made me think twice
if I die today will tomorrow be alright?
It's a quiet place, in death as in life
would it be okay, if I turn off the lights?

all the best people have gone home

That was a really beautiful cover, skub. Beautifully sung and I liked what you did with the music. It highlighted the lyrics and mood really well.

Beautiful song, Rightly. I hadn't heard it before. I was overwhelmed  with grief with all of their deaths. The passing of Prince in particular had a deep effect. His death was instrumental in my songwriting journey. Somehow the doors opened the day he died, and I wrote my second ever song. Then they came one after another in a creative wave that seemed almost out of my hands. I see now it wasn't just me. Lovely tribute.

Lynn

hey, yes thanks Lynn. Bowies death was a surprise for me, confusing.
I distinctly remember thinking - Along with Prince, Bowie was a massive influence on me personally. After hearing Prince was gone it took me weeks to believe it. Cohen was also an inflence, still is, but after Bowie and Prince were gone I was sort of hardened and could accept that Cohen was old and had lived a rich life.

I didn't really care for the local musicians cover song tributes - though well intended,I just didn't know what to make of it all.
My song, "All the best people have gone home" came about almost effortlessly.
There's a connecting chord in it that I found in Prince's "Sometimes it snows in April".

And a big thanks to Davy!
I was delighted to get news of the cover/interpretation.
I was busy with exams at the time and listened intermintently over a few days.
The feeling was touching and the divergence from the original won me over. ;D.
It's unique, I'll appreciate it forever. My songs are important for me.

I'm really too busy to record and post my attempt at my Paul Ads cover, but I will get around to it.

I'm also very keen to get another track finished, where I used most of the Lyrics of a track I didn't hear, written by Hardtwistmusic "The truth that really hurts".

I'll need to ask him his permission to post it.

Exams are robbing me of my joy, and along with a new romance they're slowing me down.

It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

Don't eat the yellow snow

And there you have it.

Thanks Skub. When Lynn and Dave sent me this I was bouncing about the ceiling. It made my day.

They turned my love song into a 1930s Appalachian ballad so I can see why you think its countrified. Although some people may think Taylor Swift rather than the Carter Family when reading your comment, but I know what you mean.

I see you picked up some menace in the lyrics. That may have been intentional to throw people off the scent, or it may have been an accident. Alternatively it may be I'm just weird. You have to decide which it is. One of the beauties of song writing.

You're not the only one who's mentioned I sound like Syd but I don't really see the comparison. He was head and shoulders above me.

Finally, a great big thank you to Lynn and Dave for turning my song into something special. Very much appreciated.

Thanks Rightly. I'm feeling a little insecure about the vocals. Went a bit out of my comfort zone, but I wanted to get that Sara Carter essence. Thanks for helping me feel better about it.
