Hi guys,

This is a song that sat in that pile of unfinished ideas that we all have for a long time. I'm so pleased that I got the lyric and melody finally finished.

It's a bare bones affair. Just a guitar and a cello. I need to know if it needs anymore than that? or if it stands tall enough as it is?

Any thoughts are welcome. Cheers ;D

Northern Lights.

I'm coming home tonight
I miss my boy, I miss my wife
Below the northern lights

I've longed for that midnight sky
My life out here's so black and white
I'm going colourblind
And ooooh I have learned
The grass is often greener where you were.

Chorus.
So take me back to Yellowknife
Where the aurora paints the sky
And we're sitting on top of the world
Il take that job in the diamond mine
Il quit this shirt and tie
I've gotta be where you are
Il follow the stars I know
Til I see the Northern lights
Then I'm home.

We made a sacrifice
We took the money, lost the time
It wasn't worth the price
He says he's a big boy now
He tells me he can ride his bike
That's great, but where was I
And oooh it's alright
I'm gonna take the teeth out of the bite.

Yo Leo.
There are some folk who post songs on the forum and when I click on the link I just know I'm gonna love it.
I could happily listen to your voice singing the alphabet, the feeling and emotion conveyed seems effortless in that way great singers manage to do,
I wouldn't change a thing man,it's lovely as it is.

I can only think of two words to describe this song.
"Awe" and "Some"  ;D
Lovely Jim Croce guitar and the vocals are stellar.
Not a thing I would change either - when's the album coming out?

I like this but i think maybe there is far to much emotion on hearing, less i think would get your lyrics out there more, just a thought but nice song.

This is just superb.  Blown away here... so glad you finished it.  It's really impressive to keep such a simple arrangement so riveting.  Lovely melody which takes some surprising turns in a few places, so it sounds fresh and unpredictable.  The lyrics are just great and tell you enough of the backstory to really feel you are getting an insight into someone's specific situation.  Early contender for June SOTM I reckon.  Don't touch a thing.
It's all too beautiful.

Hey Lostboy,

Beautiful just as always :) happy you posted it! The lyrics are really nice (again).

Only 1 small thing, I think it could use a bit more diversity between the verses and chorus, maybe by adding drums or a bit less guitar during the verses? The song stays at the same 'level' or intensity throughout (does that make sense?), which would be nice if it were released at some point.

But so great nonetheless!!

Im loving the way you use your songs to travel the world these days!
Last month you were in California & now youve written yourself all the way up to North Canada..(I looked up Yellow Knife in my songwriters atlas) :)
& maybe you are writing your family into your songs aswell?  Lovely idea
Anyway your voice is irresistibly good here & just having acoustic guitar & cello sounds totally perfect  for the song....I think if you added more to the music it wouldnt relate the story so well..
Its a wide open space & a big sky youre singing about & you need a bare wide open space in the music ...which you have got beautifully here
Now I didnt think you played guitar ...so either youve been learning or that fiendish Garage band is going to make me as useless as a cassette player soon
A beautiful song! :)
Tell me Im wonderful & I ll be nice to you :)

Lovely stuff - the harmonies in particular give some great textures, and the cello gives things a nice twist in places with some non-obvious movement.

Really like the colour images, and the colourblind part especially. Very cool!

Hi

I simply love the chorus and the backing vocals are awesome.

The concept of coming home and seeing the kids (...and the wife) made me feel quite emotional.

Favourite chord change: "Follow the stars"

The arrangement and the whole song needs no further changes. Really lovely!

And Im hearing Seal in your voice too which cant be a bad thing.

Beeeyoootiful,

Great songwriting, this reminds me in style of Elton Johns 'songs from the west coast' album. If you haven't heard it, you should, some great songs on there.

I think this stands tall and proud as it is. The harmonies and cello all blend wonderfully.

I'm sure it would work great with a fuller productions but it's just fine as is.

I was expecting a lower register cello before I listened but what you have is real nice. That's the only thing I might (might) add...an additional lower string part???...maybe?

Can't fault this though.

Well done.
