I Got This
Copyright (c) Tennyson Road Productions

Your Dad took me aside
To ask if I'd provide
The life his princess ought to get
I started to reply
But you overheard, and you sighed, and said:
"I Got This"

Two years down the line
Our tiny baby crying
You grew so tired from watching it
My new role seemed so strange
I'd never done a diaper change, but I said
"I Got This"

I guess that's what life is
A steady string of tests
No-one can ever stop it
When one of us gets overwhelmed
The other takes the helm, and says:
"I Got This"

The year my brother died
I cried, and cried.. and I cried
And I couldn't climb on top of it
But you held me through my pain
In yet another way of sayin'
"I Got This"

I guess that's what life is
A steady stream of stress
No-one can put a stop to it,
But for our love to succeed
Three words are all it needs
"I Got This"

Honey, our love will succeed
Just three words - that's all we need:
"I Got This"

Hey Paul,

Disclaimer: It's late, I've been miserably sick, I should be asleep, and I've only listened once.

It sounds like "Help Me Make It Through the Night". Maybe it's just me, but it seems to sound a lot like it. But parts of it sound like "I Did It My Way". And then the "I got this" part sounds like another song, but I can't remember which one right now.

So, I guess that means you're working under the influence of popular artistic, ummm, influences. Ugh. Sorry. Like I said, I should be sleeping.

It's a very pleasant sounding song; I only noticed one small "but-chew". I like the message and mood of the song. Your voice really is suited to it; I like the key change. I always like those little lifts one gets from that type of key change. And your voice just seems to go up forever. Awesome.

That's all for tonight.
Vicki

Such a lovely tune and sentiment, Paul. As Vicki says, it's reminiscent of some other great songs but that's ok.

It's such a great story you tell here...joyful and optimistic. Thanks.

Hi Paul!

Nice mellow tune. My knowledge of the genre is limited
so I don't hear any similar songs. Too lazy to check the
ones Vicki mentioned.

The key change works. You could have had a smoother
build up to it maybe.

Cheers,
- Martin

Great story..great ballad, the fact that it sounds like something else makes it more commercial IMHO.. :)

Hi Paul, nailed the vocal! An Authentic melody and arrangement for the genre. Typical classic Paul ballad!
Nice one!

Paul, I really love this song.  It is one of the best that I have heard on this forum.  It is instantly memorable, something that I know you strive to achieve from your recent post at the bar.  Absolute quality my friend.  I'm not going to analyse the production, which is very good by the way.  I simply want to say this is a wonderful, wonderful song - it reminds me of why I love country music!

thanks

Paul

You always tell such a vivid story with your lyrics and this is no exception.

This is a great track. If you'd written this 40 or 50 years ago, Porter Wagner or the like would have snapped it up in no time and I'd have grown up listening to it on my dads tape collection.

Well done

Hi Paul - I think this seems like your natural home here. What really stands out here is the way the words, rhythm and music gel so well together.

There is an easy style to this which plays down the subtle way that you've chosen the words for their sounds as well.

And liking the acoustic guitar - the lead sounded like it really wanted to be a slide...!

Yo Paul.

The start and verse remind me a lot of Garth Brooks,Tomorrow never comes,but probably not close enough to get you into any bother,after all,country music does follow a pattern.

Well played and sung and produced Paul.  :)

Thank you all for listening and commenting  ;D

@CaliaMoko - appreciate the kind words, Vicki and hoping you're feeling better! I must confess the similarities to other songs is intentional - my bad! So far, I've been told the melody sounds just like:

Help Me Make It Through the Night - Kris Kristopherson
My Way - Paul Anka
Tomorrow Never Comes - Garth Brooks
No Reply - Beatles
Something Changed - Pulp

Now, if I copied one of those, well then, they must have copied one another, so how many wrongs does it take to make a right? Speaking of which:

Quote
If two wrong don't make a right, what do two rights make? - An airplane!  ;D ;D

But I digress - thanks again for commenting!

@LAquila

Cheers - and I'm glad you heard some optimism !

@Martinswede

Thanks Martin - very kind of you. Yeah key changes are always tough to "introduce". Will look at that.

@shadowfax

Cheers Kevin - as they say good songs are borrowed, great songs are stolen  ;D Not saying this is great so it must be borrowed..

@Jamie

Thanks Jamie - means a lot coming from a non-country fan.  ;D

@Wicked Deeds

Cheers Paul - humbled by those comments. Glad to have ya back in these parts of the web.

@Yodasdad

Thanks for that - it probably was written back then but I decided to write it again  ;D

@adamfarr

Ah so great to get a thumbs up from a lyrics pro - thanks Adam. Years ago that would have been a steel guitar but I thought I'd throw some grit in it to keep it from being too syrupy  ;D

@Skub

I've never heard that Garth Brooks tune! In fact I've never heard of Garth Brooks or the Beatles for that matter  ;D Thanks for the kind words  ;D

A great ballad - when I read the lyrics I was wondering what the tune would be. Solid vocals, I love the swelling strings as well.

I have to admit when I was listening to it the song "Something Changed" by Pulp sprang to mind. I think there are just some motifs in the melody that are very popular and remind people of other songs - nothing wrong with that

Really liked this one

Hey Paul,

This pulls at the heart strings like only a good country song can you convey the sentiment superbly well and the melody is as strong as any I've heard on here.

If Mr Brooks released this it would be a hit and then some!

Good to hear you back Paul, lovely sentiments cleverly done in your own unique style. Loved the dual lead solo and your vocals are always powerful yet warm
