Song idea I wrote - not sure what to do with it - add vocals or not… Thoughts?

I'm far from an expert, but this sounds like an accompaniment to me. For me, a finished piece of music needs to have a clearly definable melody line that leaves the listener humming it. You know how people go around singing or humming the melody to, for instance, "Wipeout"? It's just my opinion, but i think that's what instrumentals need.

You do have some lead guitar in a couple places, but it stays in the background and isn't easily definable enough for me to start humming along with it. It's more like a solo break in a song with lyrics.

So, I would suggest adding lyrics with a melody.

I like the instrumental. It has a nice rhythm, nice for dancing or bouncing along. Your production sounds good to me. I'd like to be able to do that.

It looks like we haven't heard much from you for awhile. Are you going to be hanging around the forums for awhile now?

Hi Vicki,

I am far from an expert too!  Thanks for your feedback.  I think lyrics should be added too.  I will work on that.  My favourite band is Alice In Chains, and they have a cool way of having lead guitars as fillers in the background behind the vocals - I will try to go for that kind of vibe.

I have been quite busy but hope and plan to be more present on the forum!

In my opinion, I think it wants some vocals. The song seems to have all the right places sonically carved out to cater to a lead vocal.
Please like and share my band at www.facebook.com/shapesandfaces

Hi Jonathan!

The lead guitar has a lot of reverb. Imo too much for any situation.
Alice in Chains, long since I heard that band mentioned.
Yes vocals. And leave the lead guitar in the background.
'Over now' is a title that leaves many options for lyrical
themes. Love and drug abuse are the first things that come to my mind.
'Over now I've done my part of the fight' as a chorus idea.

'Can't seem to climb high enough. The waves are coming in'
'I've already died enough and this is the message that you bring'
as the first verse. Just ideas.

Keep working and be ready to change the rhythm of the guitar to
suit the vocals. Not the other way around. Make your self as free
as possible.

Cheers,
- Martin

I think it would be fairly straight forward to add a vocal melody to this.  It's the next  logical thing to do.  You might have to arrange some of the instrumentation but much will depend on your own creativity. It would be possible to write a melody with little or no alteration.  Anyway, I think that this is a good composition and can hear very distinctive sections. I hope that this becomes a song!
