Hi all -

I'd like to apologize for my intemperate comments earlier in the thread.  I've started a new thread here on the topic, which has already become very interesting, so if you haven't found it yet you might like to join in.

Just one comment:

When I play with others I usually don't ask for the key. Out of politeness.
I might ask for the chord progression and work my way from there Em G Bm C D/F# G - well E minor.

Gosh, is it considered rude to ask for the key then?  I do it all the time.  I thought that was how musicians communicated with other.  Surely it's a lot quicker to say "E minor" than "Em G Bm C D/F# G"?

Ps. Bartok sounds like G minor to me Ds.

I'm listening to it now (really enjoying it as well!).  I'd say that the tonality is "fluid" - it shifts rapidly from one key to another.  But maybe that's just the way my Western ears perceive it.

EDIT: It's just finished and it ended on an A, so it must be in A.  Obvious really ;)

Amazing music isn't it? It's not really in a key, the tonal centre is fluid and ambiguous, but yes, it does finish (and start) on A, so if you HAD to assign it a key, you could do worse. It's one of those pieces that reveals more with subsequent listens. I've no idea how it was composed though O_o incredible stuff
