These are some lyrics I've written for a new event coming to our community centre later this month.  (There are actually six verses in total, but I've left out two that only have local significance.)  I've written a tune and chords as well and I'm hoping to have a band backing me on the opening night, which will be a new experience for me!  There are a few inside references there but I'm sure you'll get the significance.  I've sung it to the organizer and he really loves it, but I haven't performed it properly yet.

I don't have a title for it apart from "The Rec House Sessions Welcome Song".  Would anyone like to suggest one?

When you're feeling blue and there's nothing to do,
There's a cure for your depression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can play the trombone or the saxophone,
Anything in your possession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
Come up to the mic and play what you like
In the first half, what the hell,
And if things go as planned there'll be a great band
In the second half as well.
So for anyone keen who wants to be seen
And to make a good impression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.

You can play any style from Beatles to Weill,
It's all at your discretion,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can give us a song that's ever so long
Or short ones in succession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can book your own slot, 'cause we've got quite a lot
To be selected from.
It's as easy as this: send an email to Chris
At Lyncombe Court dot com.
You'll get no reply if you send it to Guy,
But pardon this digression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.

As you're tapping your feet to the musical beat
It's almost an obsession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can bring your own booze, which is really good news
In the midst of this recession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
We start it at eight on a regular date,
Last Thursday of each month,
For example in May it's the twenty-fifth day,
And in August, thirty-oneth.
I was stuck for a rhyme so I cheated that time
If I may make one confession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.

It's a wonderful sound as you're playing around,
It's a form of self-expression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
It wouldn't be right to get into a fight,
So abandon your aggression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
Although we're not signed, we're easy to find,
You won't have far to search,
You'll hear a great tune right beside the Full Moon
And near St Michael's Church.
From the Jam at the Ram, where they don't give a damn,
You've made the right progression,
So welcome to Twerton High Street
And our brand new Rec House Session!

This is awesome! I suspect it took a lot of work to make it sound so natural and effortless. I absolutely love it!  ;D

Thanks!  I've been doing this sort of writing for quite a while now so I know quite a few "tricks of the trade".  I was really lucky with the name that was chosen for the event - what a wonderful rhyme bonanza!  There are two more verses I haven't posted here and I've still got a few rhymes left over (I couldn't get "accession", "compression", "oppression" and "repression" to fit the context).

I love writing this sort of stuff, it's an absolute joy.

   Hello Guy,
Wonderful, absolutely wonderful. What great rhythm and flow and rhyme. Month/Oneth, man that made me smile. Cannot praise this highly enough. Call it simply, "Rec house session"

                                  Just great

Thanks!  There is famously no proper rhyme for "month" so I was quite pleased to get that one in  :)

Could just call it "Rec House Session" I suppose.  I was trying to come up with a vaguely punny title like "In Session", but couldn't think of a good one.

Very nice flow and information skilfully interspersed with humour.
Do you have a rhyme for "island"?!

Nice one... though the chances of working that into one of my songs are fairly slim!

I just tried Rhymezone and it mainly came up with things like "file and", or surnames like "Hyland".  It did offer "dryland", an adjective meaning "of, relating to, or being a relatively arid region".  I suppose the two-word phrase "dry land" would do at a pinch.

If you're willing to take liberties with the rhyme you could have "silent", I suppose.

Try asking for "near rhymes" on Rhymezone! You'll get great stuff like diamond, flying (flyin'), crying (cryin'), silent, silence, lion, and more.  ;D

Rhymezone is great and new to me. I've used wikirhymer.com before which is quite "out there" - it gave me ripened and even (ironically) Streisand ...

Rhymezone is great and new to me.

It's not bad although it seems to be based around American pronunciations, and it does seem to throw out a few odd ones.  I don't generally use rhyming dictionaries or websites but they're occasionally useful (for instance "discretion" came from Rhymezone - I missed it because the spelling was different).

Thanks!  I wasn't going to post the other two verses (one describes the facilities, one describes our other events) but I might as well do so now.  I've played fast and loose with the rhymes on a couple of occasions but hopefully it'll add to the comedy.  I intend to sing them before the last verse above.

If you've food to prepare we've a kitchen out there
When your hunger needs suppression,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
And we've got a nice loo, a disabled one too,
When your face you need to freshen,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
You can smoke out the back in a kind of a shack
Where it never gets too cold,
And when we're in spring such a beautiful thing
Is the garden to behold.
There's a chance to record which you all can afford
With equipment that's profession-
-Al, get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.

The Rec House presents many other events
Which we roll out in procession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
We've our own Open Mic, no two are alike,
And we don't charge for "admession",
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
When we meet for a jam, it isn't a sham,
Though it might be sad or jolly,
You've got to admire our Community Choir
Every Monday night with Holly.
And three times a year, there's RecFest right here,
All day with no concession,
Get down to Twerton High Street
And come to a Rec House Session.
