                                          THE GREAT DIVIDE

I don't dig your roots yeah yeah yeah
you're wearing Chelsea boots but you've got no flair
you shop at Harrods and drink champagne
well i eat parrots and sing in the rain

have you ever been to Bradford or been up north
hey yeah Tarquin just go forth
have you ever been to Bradford or been up north
hey Lucinda just go forth
you shop at Harrods and drink champagne
well i eat parrots and sing in the rain

we're all divided by the great divide
fat Sharron yeah what a ride
we're all divided by the great divide
fat Sharron yeah what a ride

flat caps and whippets and pigeons and pies
i've seen the northern lights in the northern skies
in for a pound i'm in it for a penny
she drinks like a fella that's my auntie Jenny
ask me any question and i'll tell you no lie
it's my little piece of heaven and the place i will die
in for a penny i'm in for a pound
and pub rock n roll man what a sound

we're all divided by the great divide
fat Sharron yeah what a ride
we're all divided by the great divide
fat Sharron yeah what a ride

have you ever been to Bradford or been up north
hey yeah Tarquin just go forth
have you ever been to Bradford or been up north
hey Lucinda just go forth
you shop at Harrods and drink champagne
well i eat parrots and sing in the rain.

I feel a good rhythm going on. I might be culturally deprived, as I don't understand most of it. Assuming that's the case, it sounds good to me. :)

Hi Tom

Up to your usual high quality rhythmic standards :)
It's funny how something that sounds crazy when first read starts to sound normal the more it's repeated. Sanity is a slippery slope! :)

Nice work

One suggestion:

we're all divided separated by the great divide
fat Sharron yeah what a ride
we're all divided separated by the great divide
fat Sharron yeah what a ride.

The "divided by the divide" line felt like one too many "divides" to me.  Just a suggestion.

Thanks everyone for your generous feedback,
i was actually going to delete this one because
i thought i was a bit hasty when i posted it but
it's out there now so i might as well leave it.
To be honest i thought it might go down as a little
bit naff,so once again,cheers everyone,
                                                      Tom.

i enjoyed reading this (you did lose me with the parrot-eating though  ;D)

My observation upon reading it was that in many respects, everyone is united - rather than divided - by the great divide.  Northerners mock the Champagne drinking and Harrods buying, and Tarquin doesn't get how beautiful the North is.  Both are guilty of the same thing really.  So rather than being divided, are they not (sort of) united in their misunderstanding of each other?  As a Southerner oop North for many years now, it's something I'm familiar with  ;)

I liked it anyway though, and hope you don't mind my thoughts on that part anyway!

Hi Jolie,
there's a lot of tongue in cheek in this one,
i'm not daft i know there's a lot of good Southerners
out there,i've met a few in my time.
I'm a Labour voter but i'm not blind to the fact that there'll
be a lot of very good people who just happen to vote conservative.
I suppose it's live and let live at the end of the day.
Thanks for taking the time to read and for the good feedback,
                                                                                   cheers,Tom.

Hi Tom,

I'm not familiar with many of the references but it all seems like a bit of a fun...free association romp...with some catchy meter!  I wonder what it will sound like as a song....

I'm a proud member of the Tom Crocus fan club

You have a wonderful unique and original style which I always enjoy.

This one - typically - just says its piece and then quietly wanders off into the sunset without making a fuss.

Cool.

   Hi Tom,
Glad to see the madman is still around. Don't ever change my friend, your work is quite unique. You're obviously proud of where you come from, so am i, us northerner's should stick together. It's my piece of heaven too. Keep em coming.

Hi Tom,

just a couple of really small suggestions to strengthen, I hope, the great divide.

2nd line of the first verse, I'd replace but with and, so it reads and you've got no flair.

First line of the chorus I'd replace by with its, so we get we're all divided, its the great divide. I think the repeated mention of divide (I know its slightly different) reinforces the message of the song.

Being a Yorkshire lad I understand the references, great work nonetheless.

Brilliant stuff - original and fluent... I have no idea where 'i eat parrots and sing in the rain' came from but I think I'll never forget it. You took girders and you made Irn Bru...
