Ok luverly forumites, this is a song I posted a while back and have just got round to finishing. A bit of a departure from the usual for me...this is quite an exposed personal song, rather than doing the usual stuff of hiding behind fun and laughter. Hope you enjoy it.

Pipe & Slippers Man

He´s a pipe and slippers man
searching for the promised land
he never seems to ever let it show

Other people light his fire
coz he´s bogged down in the mire
he never seems to ever let it go

And he´s singing, he is singing
When the spirit comes I pray she takes me home

He´s a pipe and slippers man
searching for the promised land
He never seems to know which way to turn

So he took the time to read
The fable of the orchard tree
Believed every word of that sorry woe

And he´s singing, he is singing
The spirit´s here, I pray she takes me home

Now he dreams his little dreams
Devises little schemes
Each one will take its turn to become known

When the final page is turned
He´ll look down upon the earth
His life will be exactly what he sowed

And he´s singing, he is singing
The spirit came and now I am at home

Wow Rich that is different from what I've heard from you before; I'm a fan of your traditional, but would still love to hear more like this too!

Your vocals are more exposed on this one compared to the others, and I think they're lovely. Comes across like you had a feeling rather than a song idea and for me, everything came together wonderfully to create that - tone, lyrics, instrumental and pace.

Cool stuff, liked this it felt very soothing. It made me think of the pouges the way the vocals are raw, but that's great and fits the style well.

Good job on the production too

Enjoyed it greatly, now where's my pipe and slippers?

 ;)

Well, this is great Martyn. Love the relaxed vibe to this and clever use of light and shade. Your vocals sounded superb, all warm and mellow. It sort of had a Stones "Wild Horses" vibe which is one of my fave all time tracks. There is some clever build up as well. Female vocs are very good (Or is that you with one of your trick voices  :) :) )

Love it when you keep us guessing as to which direction you are moving in

Cheers

Hi,

I'm familiar with the concept of hiding behind fun and laughter, so bravo for allowing this one to be heard, because it deserves it!

I Like the vibe, its lyrically evocative (esp for the 'seasoned' creatively minded!  :))

It works IMHO very well and I like the vocal, to my ears (if you're in to comparisons - some are) it's kind of like Shane McGowan meets Bob Dylan...complete with a simple Claptonesque solo.

Will be listening again  :)

it s a very beautiful song.

I like how you transition between the different parts; you really lift the song up, singing louder, more powerful etc...

so; yeah; theres always space to improve:

the drums at 2:28 sound....not so good :)

also the vocal is a little too loose in the last part.

no big deal; beautiful song.

Peace

I remember hearing this a while ago so I mustve reveiwed it tho I cant remember what I said!
im a bit nervous reviewing it bcos you said its very personal ..i can only think its about your dad/grandad .. (I cant believe its about you!)...it is quite sad & probably quite poignant & has a sort of hymn or gospel /spiritual feel
the female backing vocal & the clean lead guitar were super
& the vocal was rather good ...i was always criticising your voice a while back but not here
Tell me Im wonderful & I ll be nice to you :)

Hi Martyn,

Never can predict what you are going to come up with!

This is is great.....it could easily be a soundtrack to a John Lewis xmas advert.

Great lyrics and love the vocals...brings out a side of you've that I've not heard before....love it. Like the backing vocals too....good mix with the main vocals.

Like the pianos guitars and other unusual instruments ?

Hi Martyn, I'm surprised no one has said Dave gilmour coz that guitar break and tone has his name written all over it. Can't criticise the lyrics and the emotion although the vocals which were nicely controlled early on in the song got away a bit very near the end.
Nice one, keep us all guessing!
Cheers

lubblee
personal songs are the best (for me)
reminds a bit of deacon blue
Y'know "dignity" "choclate girl", all that

keeping things stripped down works well when the song has substance.

ah got to go, and look like I'm listening to this lecture in German.

there's a german phrase
Pantoffel Held
means "slipper hero" - someone (usually a man) who tries to keep his immediate enviroment in order while wearing slippers, often not leaving his armchair.

good tune!
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

Don't eat the yellow snow

And there you have it.

Urban voodoo machine has a song with the same name? Any relation?
Anywho, this was a good chill song with a cool progression, and I enjoyed it.

ScottLevi - thanks for the nice comments! Very much appreciated.
Stewpot - Idem!
John - no trick voices...thank you for listening as always  :)
Boolio - I don't think I am anywhere near their league but thank you for the comparison. I guess I went for an honest vocal.
Butcher - thanks for the constructive comments. Always open to suggestions. The voices at the end were deliberately loose, maybe it doesn't work as well as I thought.
Tina - Don't be nervous, I don't mind criticism. You got the subject matter spot on and thank you for the comment about the vocals.
Sandeep - lets hope the advertising agencies feel the same, although Id rather sell it to Lidl  ;D
Jamie - Dave Gilmour!!! Wow, thank you.
Rightly - Wie gehts?  ;D Danke Schon
Gilties - no relation to the other song...thanks for the comments man.
ShadowFax - No need to say more - cheers
C&D - thanks for the positive comments...maybe I could do something else at the start. I will think about it.

Very nice song. Loved the high e guitar notes at 1.33. Fantastic for me.
The louder parts of singing at the end can be improved I think. Very fine lyrics.
Thanks for sharing well done.
