I Was Young When I Left Home

I wrote this about 5 years ago after having a lovely chat with my, then 5 y. o. daughter.
At some point while talking with her
I realised we essentially agreed on everything and that we had the same attitude to life.
This left me feeling sweetly elated, and vaguely wondering
if my decades of experience had counted for nothing.

Gradually, over the next few weeks this song came into existence.
at first I was picking it, then wanting it for the stage I started strumming it.

I hope some enjoys it, if not everyone.  :)

Feedback! Feedback!  :)

I Was Young When I Left Home

  T'was a splendid night and I'm feeling
     Hopelessly unknown
'Had a good ol' time, just a-reeling
        With stories to be told
Now the paint is running out of the frame
With my pockets emptied of all loose change

I was young when I left home
I was young when I left home

When the heart is great and the world
       Proves itself too small
    When a stark ambition arises
       If only to fall
The battlefield was left bloody and cold
They all had knives and I came through alone

I was young when I left home
I was young when I left home
May you find yourself a good someone to talk to
N' say to hell with these errant waves of misfortune

Now I hear your name from the darkness
As I'm walking through the snow
And a pleasant warmth embraces me, seeps
        Deep into my bones
There is no pretence in your sweet smile
And I find the strength to go the extra mile

I was young when I left home
I was young when I left home
May you find yourself a good someone to talk to
N' say to hell with these errant waves of misfortune
I was young when I left home
I was young when I left home

first of all this sounds great!..with a fab sound on the guitar & vocals & that effect on your vocals in the chorus that makes it sound like youve just sat on the top of my head is incredible even if it is a bit unnerving :)

I think young children can have some amazingly adult observations ..i know mine stunned me at times when they were very young & left me thinking they will be too intelligent to want to talk to me when they grow up!
as usual I like to hear your jazzy eloquence & carefree melodies ..thats a catchy chorus & you make me think of shakespear with a guitar!
but I am realy wishing for some more instruments in your songs to make them stand apart from one another now as ive heard a quite a few :)
Tell me Im wonderful & I ll be nice to you :)

Rightly, yet another good storytelling piece, you have this down pat. Great lyrics about connecting with your daughter...I can relate to this as a dad myself, so for me the subject is spot on. It´s nice to hear you back to your funky, strummy self as well.

Like Tinam said, it would be nice to hear some of these songs with fuller arrangements...even stuff like a second guitar or some strings...I think it would add some great variety to your songs.

Hi rightly, like the vocal phrasing and the guitar style. Nice storytelling and delivery. As others have said it would be good to hear a fuller arrangement.
Nice one!
Cheers

Hi Rightly,

Your style is growing on me.

Loved the lyrics, like I'm reading a poem...complimented with cheeky guitar playing.

Reminds me of Paul Simon...without the accent...don't know why.

Thanks for this

Okay;

some great singer songwriter stuff here.

The story behind the song is so sweet and the lyrics are great too.

In terms of the music: i wished the song opened up a little more after the first half. like: singing longer notes or strumming the guitar without muted strings - just; ,moving on with the music. well, that s just me.
it s a very personal and beautiful song and i feel bad criticising it :)

Yo Rightly.

It's all about the song, with your material and the song always delivers, both lyrically and with a jagged loo brush in the face,no nonsense execution.

That's cool with me.  8)

Lots to like about with. Sounding confident. Catchy too.
I just wanted you to sing chorus 4 times not twice. It's a great line and it sounded like you were in a rush to leave it..

Hi Rightly,

Funky guitar playing indeed. It creates an interesting dynamic under the vocal - really drives the song along.
I like the subtle effect on the vocal also - gives it a nice presence.
Interesting that Fisch has commented as your vocal actually reminds me of his.

Good stuff.

Hey Rightly,

Cool song, I was reasonably young when I left home (for my generation at least) so can relate to a lot of this.

Same great & unique tone, rhythm and guitar I always love. IMO this is one of your strongest - extra funky guitar and I love how much attention and thought each line demands from the listener.

Again with the short and sharp chorus, I'm still planning on trying to steal this! ;P

Hi Rightly,

I must have missed this when it originally got posted. I think this is great, your usual quirky rhythm really caries this through and it's very catchy with the repeated hook.

Great stuff

I find your voice mesmerising man. This stuff is right up my street. There's nothing I can really add, the lyrics are wonderful and so is the guitar. There's something rather addictive about this track that I can't put my finger on. It's gold.
