Hey all!

I've been crazy busy so lo and behold, here's a new one. I was working on another song but got tired of it and this one turned up and was written and recorded in less then two hours. It's written with a big smile but I can't make up my mind about it, is it a done piece or is it a work in progress?!?

Any and all input is welcome!

A lot of rope

Gone down to see the southlands
Country just too sweet
I get there in the morning
Escorted by my feet
Oh talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope

I wear a smile for my mama
Big drum’s gonna sound
But day turns into evening
And she’s nowhere to be found
Oh talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope

My mind is kinda slipping
As I’m knocking on her door
I sure can tell by the silence
I won’t be seeing her no more
Oh talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope

Gone down to see the southlands
And empty house I found
Though the wood it ain’t norwegian
I still burned it to the ground
Oh talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope
Talk about a lot of rope

Hey Mr S!

So good to see you back! Been ages since you posted a song on here...this is a great driving blues song with an awesome gritty vocal. Really like the whole feel to the piece, it sounds authentic and makes me want to drink whiskey. The beat is really good and your production is top notch.

Personally I think it's a finished piece. If you wanted to add something I guess the obvious is a solo but it stand right up on it's own. Great stuff and great to have you back.

aah. really like this.
I usually steer clear from these straight blues tunes, I go in there n I might never get out. lol.
Listening to it takes me back to when I was lost in the Blonde on Blonde album.

This song ends too soon. Great lyrics and vocals. The whole thing works out.
Well done.
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

And there you have it.

Excellent!

Agree with Rightly.... Too short

It does have hints of Dylan, but I thought Elvis too.

Love your voice and energy and the guitars too....

What's the song about?

This is awesome! It's one of those songs that you could sing an occasional verse and then play instrumental for awhile in between. For, like, 15 minutes or so. Everybody could get up and dance.

I'm far, far too many years away from my theory lessons...is that just one chord all the way through? If so, how many good songs can do that???

Doesn't hurt that I loooooove good blues.

Great production and you have really got a great driving rhythm there.

If anything I thought maybe some middle 8 or something would be nice to break things up a little, but perhaps then it would not be what it is.

Apart from that it sounds very finished to me.

Hi,

Love this honest, catchy blues with a great vocal. I listen to a lot of Dylan and this is up there except his might've lasted twice as long, maybe unnecessarily. I'm not sure any more instruments, solos, bridges are needed...no need to gild the lilly... this stands up 'as is'

Hey S,

Very good quality song and production, feels like a finished piece to me.

Very catchy lyrics and guitar work and great vocals, I'll have this in my head for a while.

No nits from me, I'm sure I'd carry on listening if it were longer but don't think it's necessary.

Yo S.

Very Dylan to my ear 'oles, especially the phrasing on the vox. That's just fine with me.

The track chugs along like a JJ Cale choon, which again is just fine with me.

I thought you could have done better with the ending, but maybe that's just my thing.

Very enjoyable listen.  :)

This has Dylan written all over it. There's nothing I like more than a well put together pastiche, especially one that is done as lovingly as this appears to be. Everything about this is Highway 61 Revisited; the bite of the guitars, the incessant bass etc. You've even got the trademark snarl. Speaking as a huge Dylan fan, I think you did a good job here. Taaaalk about a lotta rooope. It's definitely hookier than some of his mid-sixties work, that's for sure.

If I had any nitpicks at all it would probably be about the electric guitar. It's slightly too thin for my tastes. I would prefer a slightly thicker sound, maybe some tracking. It's just quite a solid little riff and it feels like the main character of the song, but then listening in headphones it doesn't reach out and smack me like I want it to.

Other than that, I think this is really cool.

Great to see you back S. This got me rocking from the very start. Reminiscent of some Bob Dylan. Swings along really nicely. Love the little geetar licks in there and the tambourine seems to add so much. A much underrated instrument. Your vocals are outstanding as well. Great work

Thanks to everyone for your input and comments.

I'll give some answers to your questions. It's a two chord song, partly about a guy asking for some breathing space but got a little more than he asked for. It was written and produced in two hours and separately the guitars and bass are unbelievably out of tune, but strangely they work together! (?) I wanted to put a harmonica on it but the other instruments being so ferociously out of tune it was impossible. Hehe! Tambourine was added simultaneously as I was tracking the vocals, hence the very live (off beat) feeling.  ;D The length of the song was decided...well I had a deadline, it was between a friend and myself that we were going to post a song before sunday midnight, and it was 10 min left, and I had to do some sort of mix, so there was no time for an ending really. There you go.

Again, thanks all for taking the time and comment.

All the best,

S

well listening to this id say it was recorded  in the 1960s by a american teenager with a beatle cut who definitely wasnt wearing a bowler hat! so how do you account for that? ;D
You have a amazing voice  & you dont use a lot in your songs but the little you do use is always so spot on!
I think a jimmy page session man guitar solo in the middle would be great
I do love this 1960s garage band sort of music & wish id been around to hear it as it happened
I dont know if it needs more or if it  finished too soon bcos songs of that era sounded  quite simple & didnt have all the extra bits weve come to expect nowadays now we are all sophisticated musically
so maybe its perfect as it is :)
Tell me Im wonderful & I ll be nice to you :)
