On the slim chance that anyone likes these and fancies a go at putting them to music feel free. I won't be doing so  :-\

Where Once We Were Lovers

There was a field of grass as tall as a foal
Where once we lay laughing and learning
There are houses there now, already fifty year’s old
All I’ve left are memories and yearning

There was a beach where we slept, our blanket the stars
Where we kissed and tasted of salt
There’s concrete there now, a field of cars
We couldn’t hold onto the thing that we sought

There was a walk in the woods, one thousand greens
And the bluebells stretched on forever
But came planners and concrete and killer machines
What was eternal turned out to be never

There was a church on the hill, where we dared to sin
And God smiled and joined in our laughter
But our vows were snatched by a dark changing wind
And the bells tolled for us both ever after.

There was a car I once drove, freedom and fast
And a scarf and the wind in your hair
But the wheels came off, one ride was our last
I looked but you were no longer there

There are mountains and rivers, there are deserts and seas
There are days and months and years
Where once we were lovers and forever to be
All that’s left is a man and his tears

Where once we were lovers and forever to be
All that’s left is a man and his tears

Hi,
I'd love to give these lyrics a go...saw your post about ten mins ago and have already got some ideas...
Are you really sure you want someone else doing something with them though though?
I think they are really very powerful and I just wonder whether you might regret not doing it yourself - esp after hearing my attempt! :-)

Fill your boots, Phil. I enjoyed your last tune - had a nice late night feel and this might well suit that. But if you want to do it as a jolly up-tempo number, it's up to you... ;D  I don't have the vocal ability or melody-writing ability to do anything with it, so I won't regret opening it for a collab. I'm actually thinking of focussing more on lyrics, rather than music, in the future.

Del thanks for this chance I feel humble (and quite nervous!) setting your lyrics to music but really looking forward to completing the challenge...
I think you're being very hard on yourself...'Doghouse' was written and performed wonderfully well!!...it'll  be a shame if we don't hear what you do from now on if you concentrate soley on lyrics...

What I'll (try to) do is put something together which I think will be moody/atmospheric and will build up throughout but like I said I hope I can do this justice because these lyrics are excellent IMHO and demand respect.
I'll make sure you hear first so you have the option to 'veto!'
 :)

There will be more "Doghouses", Phil. But on balance I think there will be more lyrics than songs. Clint sums it up:

Hi Del,

like the lyrics, as you grow older the places you take for granted disappear. My first local has been pulled down for a supermarket.

Looking forward to hearing boolio turning them into a song.

Thanks Polky. Phil (Boolio) has given this the emotional acoustic singer-songwriter treatment and has done a fine job. He's posted a version over in the Finished Song section. Well worth a listen.

Cheers
