Hi all,
What, if anything, are you using to compose/record your songs?
I can hear my songs in my head but have no way of getting them out.  I have sporadically attempted to learn the guitar but am failing due to lack of time.
Perhaps I am destined to be a collaborating lyricist!
Thanks
A

I was looking earlier to be fair looks like some people use VSTs (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=8932.0), but the consensus is that these should be used either to express ideas rather than create songs, or be complemented by real playing.

Thanks I shall have a look.  Hopefully I will be able to put something basic together.
Has anyone ever used a demo company or such like?
Cheers

I can produce full demos from ideas and have worked with many "non playing" writers in the past

Due to the time this takes I need to charge but rate are very attractive  ;D (well, I like them!!) - PM me if you are interested in talking further...

If you have some basic music theory knowledge I think EZ KEYS is an excellent tool for aspiring writers to get a basic piano track up and running

If you don't have much music theory knowledge you might want to check out this thread:

Thanks for that Boydie.  I may have to treat myself to your services post Christmas :-)
In the meantime I will spend some time looking at theory and have another crack at the ol' guitar!

i agree with boydie that a keyboard is easier & quicker to get started with than guitar...
if I was in your  position & couldnt play a instrument I would buy a cheap electronic keyboard
its easier to learn chords on a keyboard than a guitar & change faster as you have 2 hands free whereas with guitar you only have one
most of them have drum machines built in so youve got your rhythms straight away
& a lot of them can record what you play aswell
that would help you write & record songs quicker than any other way I can think of
you could then record the song with vocals on your phone...it would be basic but its the simplest quickest way to get up & running

computers ..daws & vsts are complicated ...tbh I could never have mastered all that without a LOT of help ..(actually 3 sons & a husband & a brother combined!) it took  a lot of time

a lot of people use apps like garage band on iphone & ipad which has a mic for recording vocals but I  dont think thats actually writing your own songs from scratch  its more like using loops & existing sounds to make into a song  :)
Tell me Im wonderful & I ll be nice to you :)

Thank you for kind words  8)

The podcast was a joint effort with JAMES NIGHTHAWK, TONE & BECKY - unfortunately "real life" got in the way so we are having a bit of a break at the moment

I have always played guitar (playing in bands - and opening for some big names)

I did make my living teaching guitar many moons ago

I have had some publishing deals for my songs but not had the big break (yet!) so I still have a day job  :(

I have also written for FUTURE MUSIC magazine in the past

I have aspirations to write a book and possibly do some YouTube videos teaching songwriting theory, production etc. specifically aimed at demystifying the whole process for beginners (especially using DAWs and all the confusing tools)

I now own this forum so at some point I plan to pull all of this together to make this forum THE place for songwriters to come and hang out, where experienced, published, writers can mix with beginners (which happens already and it is fantastic to see everyone improve) with access to some content or even a "programme" to develop various aspects of songwriting such as music theory, lyrics, learning instruments, music production etc. etc. - soooo many ideas, so little time!

I hope that answers your question - Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions

Thank you for taking the time out to reply.
I started listening to your podcast on the way to work this morning.   It's the only time I get to myself!
I think this is a great forum.  I've visited sporadically and read/listen to more than I post.  Will be making an effort to be a more active member and learning from the wealth of experience on here.
Cheers
