I'd been tweaking this for a little bit. And, I plan on re-recording it with a full band and all, but in the mean time I would love to hear what you think of this -- my working demo of this song.
Here's a Soundcloud link:

LYRICS

1.
Well I’ve been tied up
Now I’m tied down
And I’m tangled up in knots
But you know, it ain’t the worst place I could be
‘Cause I’ve been busted up
And broken down
And lost everything I’d got
But now I’ve got someone to share their debt with me

2.
Well, I owe a lot
She owes a lot
And we’re never catching up
But I’ve never felt the need to save my face
We know we can’t keep up
To what we’ve never caught
And, besides it’s way too late
But now we’re old enough to know this ain’t no race

(bridge)
The Jones’ were born with spoons in their mouths
And they could pay for their head starts
And their daddies all put rockets on their backs
But we could barely pay the entry fee
So when the gun went off
We were left behind—at the back of the pack…

3.
And now we can’t keep up
To what we’ve never caught
And, besides it’s way too late
But now we’re old enough to know this ain’t no race
Oh yeah, we're old enough to know this ain't no race.

(scat singing/solo)

repeat bridge
repeat verse 3.

Hey it sounds like it might a pretty cool song but I might be deaf but I could not hear the words properly, would like to hear it acoustic with voice louder before you put it to a band though

Oh, it's a terrible recording, for sure. Just did it on my voice memo function on my iPod, like I said.
I've done other demos the same way before and they've come out better than this, mix-wise. It's weird.
But, the lyrics are here, in the thread, if you want to know what I'm singing.
And, thanks so much for listening. I really do appreciate it!

The good old i-phone memo - can't beat it for capturing ideas.

What I hear sounds very good, nice energy, melodies and retro vibe. Even with my laptop on full volume it is quiet. Could do with whacking into a DAW and amplifying so people can give better feedback.

It sounds like a song that suits a low-fi approach. Obviously needs recording properly, but probably not a lot of production.

Promising.

This definitely is worth doing up nicely. Great dance number and just my kind of energetic tune. I'm looking forward to hearing your "finished song" version!

Great so far I look forward to a more finished recording
But I see some charm that the song is about getting by just fine without too many fancy bells and whistles

Although maybe during the part about kids with rich parents getting a head start you could switch from acoustic to electric guitar to give a different more *expensive feel and then switch back to acoustic again
Just a thought but great job

Thanks, all!
I'm thinking about acoustic guitar (maybe resonator? we'll see how that sounds), snare drum, bass, and maybe a wacky organ solo in place of the scat singing. Probably a Wurlitzer sound or something similar.

Sounds a bit llike a country-like song from The White Album. A bit like Don't Pass Me By / Rocky Racoon

Gonna try this one out—and my other new one—at an open mic tonight.
We'll see how they fly.

I wanted to post the full-band rehearsal recording of this one. This is still pretty rough, but at least you can hear where it's heading.

Looking forward to hearing from y'all again.

Since I hadn't gotten any feedback on the full-band recording, I thought that I would bump this one after 3 months.
Still curious to hear what you all think.
Definitely work to do on the drums, methinks... but that's part of the process.
Thanks!
