Hi everyone, this is honestly just a piece of fun.  I really enjoyed myself (childish I know) writing it but there is more truth element than I really want to admit.

If you'd like to let me know what you think of it - if anything, please do.  Comments will be taken seriously, even if the lyrics aren't.

Hope you like it anyway:

KILLING THE CAT

I thought I was a poet, here to give you all a laugh
But through some diverse converse, was advised to try this path
Just ordered me a keyboard, on Ebay.  So I guess
My first attempts at music may well be a bloody mess

Its Plinky plonky night tonight, bash em out, they'll be alright
never minding where I'm at, cos it sounds like I'm killing the cat!

I'll try to change my poems, to lyrics and chorus and such
I never thought for one moment that, to write a song took so much
Words come quite easy to me as a poet - and boast I can do all day long
But, creating the music to fit with my words? then for someone to say its a song?

Plinky plonky, scare the dogs, force my way through the thick brain fogs
I've got the melody off pat, but it sounds like I'm killing the cat

I won't fret, just letting it happen,  a few keys to follow the hum
Try that again and see how it sounds, my Gawd, thats sounds a bit rum
My ears should have heard a melodious noise, but currently instead of that
This repetetive din, is now what I'm in and it sounds like I'm killing the cat

Plinky plonk till daylight's gone, then plinky plonky all night long
No time for a coffee or even a chat, cos it sounds like I'm killing the cat.

Even to my untrained ear, what comes across is oh so clear
This racket isn't helping me to make songs from  my poetry
I've never been taught to read a note and now its really got my goat
Don't call the RSPCA, I'm just trying to make a tune some day

Plinky plonky, sounding wonky, you'd better hold on to you hat
Plinky plonky – give me strength – cos it sounds like I'm killing the cat!

Put that crooner's voice on hold, my melody's yet to unfold
Perhaps the keyboard's wired up wrong, I'm struggling here to make a song
But somethings sounding not quite right, I think my keyboards flat
Cos never mind how hard I try, still sounds like I'm killing the cat

Plinky Plonk its now or never, d'you think I'll be this bad for ever?
Its not my natural habitat, am I  better off killing the cat?

Made a tune, recorded it, then I couldn't get my words to fit !!
Decided to add just a smidgen of beat then couldn't keep up, no I couldn't compete
Reading music, you have to see, I've no ingrown ability
Just looks like tadpoles hung on lines, so pr'aps I'll stick to basic rhymes

No more Plinky plonks for me, I once was blind, but now I see
I'm truly no Burt Bacharach cos it sounds like I'm killing the cat!

I liked this - even though it's a bit of dark humour in which cat lovers aren't going to see much humour. It's a bit too long for me, and maybe "strangling" the cat would be more humane appropriate. I mean, you could kill a cat by shooting it and it might not make much racket, but strangling one would certainly be a noisy affair :)

Hi Paul, thanks for your feedback.  I'm glad you liked it and though I never intended it to be that long, it just kept coming, so I kept on writing.

As I said the words are just a bit of fun but its also quite an honest version of me with my newly acquired keyboard.  Fortunately I don't have a cat but I do pity the dogs.

Certainly worth considering the change of killing to strangling.

Thanks again.

   Hi Opal,
This may only be a bit of fun, but i love it, an absolute hoot. You're a very skillful and talented weaver of words with a fertile imagination. Don't give up on the songwriting either, i'm sure it will come. Fun yes, but to describe musical notes as "tadpoles hung on lines" is very poetic. Anyone out there who didn't smile when reading this, please don't invite me round for drinks. Opal, you can invite me round, any day of the week.

                               Wonderful

I read this several times before I quite got the flow of it.  When I finally did figure out the flow, it got really interesting.

Unique concept.  And, of course, it has nothing to do with actually "killing the cat."  No pet owners need be offended.  Of course everyone has the right to be offended if they want, but one would have to work hard to be offended by this if they read it carefully and understood it.

AND.... boy can I identify with how difficult it can be to "find" music for a lyric.

Thank you for your feed back.  Your comments mean an awful lot.  I really appreciate viewpoints from the experienced especially when there's nothing negative.

Isn't it interesting how different people read different things into words?

I'm happy that you understood what it meant and I'm pleased I'm not the only one who's struggled with matching lyrics with music.

I'm still tapping away at this keyboard, desperately seeking inspiration from thin air.  I'm determined if nothing else.

There are some softwares you can combine with your keyboard to help you along.  Let me know if you are interested in hearing what they are.

The first one that you might look into is a free service called "Virtual Piano" which allows you to do what you are doing on the keyboard with a virtual keyboard that "remembers" where you have been. I don't use it because I can't play a lick on keyboards..... but it looked like it would be really helpful to someone who can.
