I've now done it three times and it has proven to be a 'breaker of ice' and a 'saver of situation'.
At three recent funerals I've written a song for the deceased and sung it at the service/wake.
On each occasion it was warmly welcomed as things can get quite mawkish with folks making speeches about the departed etc.
What I'm saying is that as a songwriter you can add something personal and uplifting to a difficult situation and NO-ONE will mind. 
Here are links to two examples. I'm not after feedback just suggesting an outlet for creative talents. The first on was written overnight to a nicked melody (that got a big laugh) and the other one written while someone was dying. Both were sung live with just guitar. P.S Hope you never have to but life being what it is you never know......
