@PaulAds,
I'm listening to your album right now. Man I hate study. I've had a week off from work and have been writing 2 essays of 3000 words. I'm so out of touch with the process.
Having said that, you are so in touch with the writing process. The opening track is so immediate. Concise and memorable lyrics. The solo is ace too!
"It's a no from me" is simply beautiful. I get the impression that it was all so easy for you to write, perform and produce these songs. I guess this is partly true because you're such an accomplished writer but experience tells me that you must have worked hard to deliver these beauties! I'm on track three, 'ZZ Tramp' It's skips along, providing a new distinct melody to the last and of course, the concise lyrics are evident here too. You don't waste any words, when often others often do. That's the hall mark of a great writer in my opinion. Love the dynamics here. "women go crazy for the chap with the beard" I love it! I admire how you can be so direct; a writer not to be messed with but then there's a lovely gentle side to your personality which shines through and is reflected in the melodies often facilitated by your use of Major 7th chords. "States I've been in" is currently playing. Such a cool song. Elvis Costello would have been proud to include this one in his library of songs. It has real charm! Love the word play, never been to the USA but man I've been in some states." Such clever lyrics that reveal your thought processes and how you implement these cool observations of life. "A gigantic ice cream that keeps licking itself." I love that lyric. 'Puleez' is quite possibly my favourite song from this collection.
Man. where does your inspiration come from? "Get Some' is now playing as the album roles on and still you maintain a lovely fresh approach. Quite an achievement from a writer who has engaged his craft for so many years. You manage to present a Monkey-esque song based on limited lyrics yet you still engage the listener. Yeah, The Beatles meets The Monkeys. The m8 section, though not 8 bars does exactly what a m8 should, offering contrast and relief before jumping back into the body of the song. it's skilful and very cool! War of the Roses, different indeed. Sadly, no sign of Kathleen turner but hey we have the funeral crasher at work and the stage is his. Bass is sounding ace on this track and so.......we arrive at the closing number. I've been thoroughly engaged throughout the listening experience. There is something for everyone here. Love the mood of the closing track. Your album gives us everything but then everything is often present in any given track here: song craft, wit, conciseness, melody, sadness humour. What more could any of us demand? Delightful
