Just messing with numbers.

Of my 17 songs I've submitted here I've had 258 reviews, which equates to an average of around 15 reviews per song. That's pretty generous and I thank you all kindly. It's a great community. I'd like to think I reply in kind though recently work has been very busy with a two hour commute either end of a working day and I have been a bit lax with my own reviews - either doing them, or the length and content of them. That working day hourage makes time to do stuff like this quite rare and quite valuable (and it links in with my ten hours a day practice post elsewhere in The Bar -  I honestly don't get how people have such time).

Anyway, digging into the numbers there are some interesting facts.

75 people have reviewed my songs

35 have reviewed just 1
22 have reviewed 2 - 5
12 have reviewed 6 - 9
6 have reviewed more than 10 (59%) of my songs

There's no hidden agenda to this post other than to say I really appreciate every review and every listen and every comment. I'm learning lots and I really appreciate it :-)  But especially you six :-)  If I knew who you really were beyond your very strange forum names I'd put you on my Christmas card list!

Red wine, eh?

You put all those stats together and you complain about lack of time  ;D

I think I must have done at least 6 of your songs so if you have a leaderboard with prizes I´m gonna have to get my backside moving. I want to be special too  :D

Seriously Del, your songs are easy to review because they are always a pleasure to listen to. Now I´m thinking of doing the same but it sounds like way too much math for me!

I've wondered, from time to time, if I'm getting back to everyone who's reviewed at least one song of mine, by reviewing one or more of theirs. If I scan through the reviews, I could probably figure it out. I should probably do that....

No leader board, Martyn (you've done more than 6 by the way). I'm genuinely appreciative of every single review. But I realised very quickly that to be fair to folks I was going to have to keep an eye on who reviews my songs so I can review theirs, because I knew that there were too many songs to review everyone's. Like yourself, I do try and review more than a purely reciprocal basis would demand, but if a particular month is busy then it's good to have a some idea of where I should direct my time.

As regards complaining about a lack of time - I'm just procrastinating is all. I should be practice some scales if truth be told, but instead I'm drinking red wine, listening to good music on You Tube, and fooling with pivot tables!

I have toyed with algorithms to put on the website to calculate stats like these - but ultimately I thought it would suck the soul out of the forum

I much prefer the "organic" and "informal reciprocal" process that naturally happens

I think an average of 15 reviews per song is really good

It gives a nice range of feedback and if a few reviewers mention the same things they like and dislike I think this is sufficient "evidence" to inform future songs

I know many many people exceed this but I think a 1:4 ratio of songs posted to reviews would be a good starting point for most - when you start seeing the same names reviewing there is a natural tendency to give a review back so the figure in theory should be 1:15 for the community to thrive, which it generally seems to be, especially amongst the regulars

I always review the songs of peeps who review mine, way it's gotta be really..
new members should spend a week reviewing to build a base of people that will reciprocate..
I see no reason to review a new members song if they haven't put some effort in to the forum..

might have gone a bit off topic here..sorry.. :) :)

I don't understand where people get time either. You guys are so prolific and I really can't keep up!

I play your songs many times over for a review though, usually getting into double figures, so maybe that's where I go wrong?

I've never really looked at it in any kind of scientific manner...though I guess I do try to pay more attention to the folks who contribute to the forum or have shown me some kindness.

I sincerely wish I had the time to comment on more songs, lyrics etc

it seems only courtesy to concentrate your reviewing on the people who review your songs
which is what i do ....but a lot of non regular posters here dont seem to understand that
which realy baffles me they seem to think a few totally random reviews will be enuff to get them lots of comments on their latest
ive mentioned it to a couple of them & they obviously dont see it & i didnt want to spell it out but if i review 4 of your songs & you dont review one of mine then you wont be getting any more & thats that! bcos i cant help but be offended by it
Tell me Im wonderful & I ll be nice to you :)

I agree but, man! how to keep track? I used to be really organized, and I'll have to try to remember how that works. And write a note every time I read a review someone left for me so I make sure to return the favor.

Meanwhile, anyone reading this who's reviewed anything of mine and I haven't reviewed anything of yours, feel free to point that out to me.
