This was written as a Johnny Cash-style country comedy number...

CHRIS REA

I was driving back to my cheap motel
When I heard the strains of 'The Road To Hell'
And it sounded just like Chris Rea
Yeah it sounded just like Chris Rea.

I looked to my left and not to far
in the distance was a Highway Bar
And the music grew louder as I drew nearer

Karaoke night was lit in neon lights
A wino was sleepin' on the porch
Flies 'round the bar
The sound of a guitar
And that wonderful gravelly voice

Well make no mistake folks
This place was a dive
And i was served by a barmaid with only one eye
I said 'hey that guy can sure hold a tune"
She said "That aint a guy, that's my sister, June"

Well early next morning when I woke up
I was in the back of a pick-up truck
With the barmaid with only one eye
You surprised?
So was I.

I looked to my left and not to far
in the distance was a Highway Bar
And the music grew louder as I drew nearer

Karaoke night was lit in neon lights
A wino was sleepin' at the bar
Flies 'round the bar
The sound of a guitar
And that wonderful gravelly voice.

These are well written lyrics.  I like the way they tell a story, a typical feature of the country music genre. The humour evident in your song is another country music technique also.  I'd say that these are amongst the very best lyrics presented on this forum! As for Christ Rea, he certainly does have a "wonderful gravelly voice."

Very well done!

It's definately a country/ early rock and roll type song. It reminds me of the old classics like "A boy named Sue"

I like it mate. I'm a bit rubbbish at reviewing just lyrics. I find it so hard to see whether they are good or not

without hearing the music to them. I only usually comment on lyrics if they are so obviously dreadful, or they catch

my eye.

Yours caught my eye :) I like them. Do you have music for them?

Thanks for taking the time to look at the lyrics mate. Glad you liked them.

There is a very basic demo kicking about but going to record it a bit better before i put it up on here.

Thanks for feedback - much appreciated!

i too heard Boy Named Sue in my head. And I too can't really judge lyrics in isolation as to me they serve the song, not vice versa. Entertaining though!

Hi,
yeah, I like the lyric & you say what you imagine it to come out like but for me I would like to hear YOU perform it!! As I have said in a few reviews I have given, for me it is so important to hear how the writer expresses a piece of work. So lets hear it how ever rough it may be!!!  :)
