Hi everybody, the end of August has passed, so it's time to select the best song of the month! I'll be hosting this one.
I'm on vacation right now, but when I return in the beginning of September I'll listen to all new songs in 'Feedback on Finished Songs' from members that contributed more than 100 posts to this forum and create a shortlist. I'm looking forward to making the top5 selection! Update: I'm back!
The prize: the top 5 of this month will feature in the August 2015 SOTM playlist on the soundcloud page of this forum (https://soundcloud.com/songwriterforum). If you are a SoundCloud member, please 'follow' this page and like/repost the playlists and songs on it, so we help each other, and this community on getting more exposure!
Cheerzz! MM

-THE SHORTLIST-
First I'd like to say I really enjoyed listening to the 15 tracks on the longlist, wow, amazing quality. I had a really hard time composing the shortlist, each song was really close to selection ...
It will be a top6 this month, because I couldn't choose between number 5 and 6 on 'my' list. So here they are in random order:
1. Live without - Shadowfax
2. Run until they catch you - Jambrains and HardTwistMusic
( http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/song-reviews/run-until-they-catch-you-(collab-with-hardtwistmusic)/ )
3. You got it all - Seriousfun
4. I've never met a song I didn't like - Paulski
( http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/song-reviews/i've-never-met-a-song-i-didn't-like/ )
5. Not enough - BeckyLucyThomas and Boydie
( http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/song-reviews/not-enough-collaboration-with-boydie/ )
6. Want 4 nothing - Neil C
-
THE LONGLIST - in no particular order
1. My Town - Mihkay
2. When - Neil C and Arkwright
3. Live without - Shadowfax
4. Run Until They Catch You - Jambrains & HardTwistMusic
5. This Perfect Storm - Empyreantic & Giuseppe Saavedra collaboration
6. Bare Foot Shuffle - Arkwright and Seriousfun
7. You got It All - Seriousfun
8. I can never win - Empyreantic
9. I've never met a song I didn't like - Paulski
10. Another Lonely night - Shadowfax
11. King of the Hill - Nooms & Binladeda
12. Chat me up, turn me down - Bernd
13. Not Enough - BeckyLucyThomas & Boydie
14. Want 4 Nothing - Neil C
15. Falling into you - CrystalSuzy
I've commented on every song on the longlist if I didn't do already, and as a rule I read the other comments AFTER I posted mine (so I don't get influenced by other's opinions and observations), but taking the risk I am on my own with my feedback ::). I believe the poster of a song can do most with feedback if it is personal. When you combine all personal feedback you, as a songwriter, can use it to measure how your intention landed and choose what to improve, how and when!
About composing the shortlist: I scored each track (for myself) on the following criteria:
1. Lyrics (how strong is the message)
2. Chord Progs (how well does this song support the message harmony-wise)
3. Melody (how well does this song support the message in the notes sung/played)
4. Groove/Vibe (how well does this song support the message bass and rhythm wise)
5. Production (how well does this arrangement sound in terms of sound quality and mix)
6. Effect (how well does the combination of the above work in delivering a message to the heart)
This is how I decided to value these great tracks, there's no 'right' or 'wrong' and it's all a matter of individual taste.

I've never met a song I didn't like and I can't Live without them and even though My Town is Frozen, When A girl who likes to get around do the Bare Foot Shuffle you better Run Until They Catch You. After yet Another Lonely night in This Perfect Storm I now understand that, You got It All, you're the King of the Hill and I can never win so Chat me up, turn me down.
;D

Hahaha JB I think you're going to volunteer to host the SOTM of September and open the comp with a song containing the above lyrics as a closing ceremony for this month's comp deal? ;) MM

Haha nooms, tell that to Miss MartiMedia and she will be laughing out loud the rest of our holidays ;) I'm chaotic as hell, but when I have focus on something I want to do it 'right', with all the passion I have. So thanks for the compliment! Holiday cheerzz man! MM

LOL! ;D I agree with MM, JB ;D that's too good ;D Both you guys got way too much time on your hands, but thanks for putting so much of that time, into this forum :-* :-*
Making up a song, with song titles...hmmm ??? maybe a new song comp idea :o :o
-
Deal CS! Let's see what JB thinks about this idea (he became a bit quiet after his last post don't you think?)! Haha no I don't have too much time... Wish I had! I sleep 3 hours a night to be able to do this to the community next to my busy job in real life! ;)
Okay people, our longlist is impressive, and contains 15 songs!
Peace and Cheerzz to all!! MM

Wish I had! I sleep 3 hours a night to be able to do this to the community next to my busy job in real life! ;)
3 hours sleep?!?! You are one lucky, spoiled brat!
I was up for 48 consecutive hours putting those titles together and at the same time doing double shifts in the coalmine!
And when I finally got the chance to sleep it was raining so hard that the hole in the road that I call home was flooded so I had to wake up once every minute to go up for air!!!!
-
Ah ! - I need 100 posts before consideration

Shortlist's up everybody (see OP)! I had a really nice time composing this list. Congrats to the ones that made it! :o ;)
To all: may I have your vote please? See the poll right above the opening post. There you can select your winning song and as a result you can see the current stats of the voting immediately! Nobody (okay maybe the admins) can see who voted for which song so it's (100% or almost) anonymous. Only registered members can vote, and every member can vote for 1 and only 1 song, so after you voted you won't be able to vote again.
I'll close the voting poll on tuesday the 15th of September at midnight, and that will also be the moment we have a winner!!

Just listened and voted. Great choices - thanks MM (though having 6 made it even harder!). I also liked the judging criteria as I think they give appropriate weight to writing as well as all the arranging and producing skills (though I am everyone will give greater or lesser weight to the different parts).
And the polling system is great.
-
MM,
Thanks for the inclusion I really wasn't expecting that btw. Its actually fun reviewing and selecting and well done for cracking the voting thingy, I've been thinking about asking Tone for that.
The voting appears to be visible to all, unless I've become a moderator without being told ;D. Anyway I wonder whether Tone could get a voting system that also hides the result until you want to display it? I'd suggest the reveal at the end may be preferable if there's a runaway winner early on or all bar one gets lots votes.. Just a thought..
:)

No only that, the results are inverted as well! Hope MM can fix that bug, if not, I can do it, that's what I do for a living ;D ;D ;D

Wish I had! I sleep 3 hours a night to be able to do this to the community next to my busy job in real life! ;)
I was up for 48 consecutive hours putting those titles together and at the same time doing double shifts in the coalmine!
You guys who work in the coal mines think you have it so rough.
Why, when I was a boy, I had to shovel pig manure. Had to walk six miles to the pig farm and six miles back home...... UPHILL BOTH DIRECTIONS. ;o)

Bah! You are so happy to have been a boy! I was born old and started to work before I could even walk, had to walk on my hands instead. And uphill!?!?! Both directions?!! C'mon, me and my siblings could only dream of a hill. Did not climb one until I was 37 and then it turn out I had only stepped on a snail!

Aaarg! You are so happy to be able to walk on your hands! I don't have hands! It's a miracle I can play my guitar with my teeth while programming computers with my nose. In fact, I only have a head! I use the wind to blow my head sig-sawing through a field of countless snails two times a day to and from my home and most of the time the wind doesn't change direction during the day so I have to blow my head around the globe to reach my home. Eh home... well it's more like a kind of box, only without the six sides...

Btw... people we need 295 more votes, we're almost there! Voting is really, really appreciated! MM
-
Wowzers! Sotm has really gone pro! Great organisation MM!
-
Well done Marti for taking the time to host.
Interesting to be able to see the results as they come in but, as Neil says, is that a good thing?
The other thing that crossed my mind is that presumably one can vote for oneself if one is that unsporting and desperate!
Only other thought is that quality of production shouldn't really be considered. Not everybody has the equipment or the expertise and it is Song of the month not Production of the month. On a songwriting forum we should be focussing on the song.
Anyway while I'm here...if you haven't yet voted...DO IT NOW.
-
Ya, thanks for doing such a great job organizing this SOTM, MM :)
I really like that you posted all the eligible songs for the month 8) Maybe, just for a change
one month, everybody could just vote for their favourite song out of the long list :o :o
But I do agree with Viscount :) SOTM should not be based on production or performance :)
I think it's suppose to be a songwriting comp. ???
BTW~ where/when do you see the results as they come in? Is it just when you vote? ??? ???
-
Ok sorry guys I also considered 'production' and you're right. Btw, I gave 'production' a low weight in my consideration, so it didn't have effect on the resulting shortlist.
Can't change that anymore since the comp is already running, but we'll pass this comment to the next host. Hope that's okay with you! MM
-
Maybe, just for a change one month, everybody could just vote for their favourite song out of the long list :o :o
I think that's a good idea ;D and not just because you're a Canadian ;D ;D

Yw Viscount, and thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yeah good question about the poll mechanism, let's ask everybody: people do you like to see the results coming in in real time in the poll? Or would you have preffered not to see the progress and hear who won the comp at the day the comp closes?
Yes the thought that one can vote for himself/herself crossed my mind, but I didn't see that as a huge risk, and honestly, I trust everybody that they will not vote for theirself, what's the point of being part of a community in that case? ;-)
See my response about considering 'production' a few posts above this one.

It would make the voting process definately less subjective, so I think that's a good thing. On the other hand: why was the shortlist introduced? I mean, I just copied the procedure from earlier SOTM comps, but there might be a reason ;-) Maybe a longlist is just too long causing nobody to vote anymore?
And (but that's less relevant) I really enjoyed diving into the longlist and compose a shortlist.
But if it isn't tried before I'd say: yes! Let's try that next month, good idea!
MM
-
well i just voted and it didnt hurt at all
go on give it a go, you know you want to ..
good luck to all
not sure im keen on being able to view the progress though
-
Hi nooms, thanks for voting!!
I'm not keen on being able to see the progress as well, but I have no other option when using the poll system. A poll on this forum has three options:
1.Show the poll's results to anyone.
2.Only show the results after someone has voted.
3.Only show the results after the poll has expired.
The third option was greyed out, so I couldn't select it. So I chose option 2 (so everyone who has voted can see the progress). Maybe it's good to keep it that way for now (unless the admin can enable option 3 )... MM
In the meantime: people please vote, we got neck2neck races going on right now!!
-
Hi,
My first time voting. Excellent songs to choose from.... I like the updating poll. I don't think it has downside, since no one can vote more than once anyway....!
-
Thanks for voting igg! And for those who have not voted yet (if you do you'll be able to see the progress ;-)) the tension is building up fast!! We've got tail to tail and neck to neck races going on here! So plz vote and you can witness the progress on top of this page!!
Voting is closed next tuesday at midnight (forum time), people who didn't vote (3000+ fellows) will hear the results by that time, I'll be posting them in this thread!
But again: please keep voting! The songwriters in the shortlist deserve the attention don't you think?
Have a nice weekend!
MM

Just voted

Thanx for voting Keith! Wow now it's really going to be an exciting race!!!
People, closing date and time is fast approaching, but there's still time to VOTE!!
MM

Looks like your format has generated extra votes - a good thing.
Come on guys and gals. Still time to vote.

i'm really surprised there haven't been more votes...c'mon folks!
-
Looks like your format has generated extra votes - a good thing.
Come on guys and gals. Still time to vote.
Yeah, tried a different approach using the poll system, seems to work! Although it (of course) has its advantages and disadvantages comparing to the formats that were used before..
Most of the critiscisms I received were on the 'being able to see the progress from the moment a member voted'. That has 2 sides imo: On the one way it might get potential voters curious, cause when they vote they'll see the racing in real time. On the other way it's taking away the surprise element from the ones that care about the SOTM comp (the voters) cause they already know who'll win by looking at the results progress (3000+ members don't see this until they vote btw)...
In my observation the members that actually vote are sorry this surprise element disappeared in this format. So I searched for contact with Tone and asked him to enable the option on the poll system of this forum to enable the poll configuration 'Show results after the poll's expiry date has passed'. But unfortunately there was no way to enable that option (and Tone really, really tried).
So for next month we can choose between the poll system (that results in more votes, but takes away the surprise for the members that care about the SOTM) or the PM system (that results in less votes, but keeps the surprise element for the members who care).
Thanks for commenting and voting Digger! MM
i'm really surprised there haven't been more votes...c'mon folks!
Hey PaulAds, well, I managed to crank the amount of votes by 30-45% compared to last month I think, but I totally agree we should promote these competitions (without spamming the community) and try to motivate our members to paticipate!
Since you seem to have interest and motivation on the SOTM competition, am I rude to ask if you'd like to host the SOTM September comp? MM
-
Hello MartiMedia
Sure!
Could you drop me a line explaining a little of what I'd need to do, please? I'm no tech expert but I'm happy to do it if I'm able to :-)
Oh...and this is my 100th post...yay!
-
Paul, I commend you, a relative new comer, for putting you hand up to run the next months SOTM but I really think you should wait for another month. Not for any snobby reason but mainly out of respect for you having just reached the 100 post milestone.
The selector has the job of shortlisting the 5 or so songs for voting and I think most people would consider it poor form to select one of your own songs in the short list. in fact i cant recall anyone who has done that. So with having just qualified for the short list with your posts, and couple that with the really strong song entry you have posted I think you should defer your offer for one more month so that you can have the enjoyment of participating in this months vote. Then by all means, take your turn.
Allan.
-
ok Allan...count me out, Marti :)
<breathes sigh of relief>
-
Hi Allan,
Actually the idea for September was to TRY (for one month) taking the longlist (all songs posted in September) and put them all in one big poll so every member can choose 1 favorite song to vote for. That idea was expressed some posts back in this thread. Advantages are
-that we skip a subjective step ('composing the shortlist'),
-hosting takes less time and the host can compete him-/herself
disadvantages are
-that the long list may consist of more songs then the number of voters
-this probably will drop the number of votes cause people won't have time to listen to the entire longlist
Idea was to try this one month to see if that works.
Agree that PaulAds has a strong song going on, but that should be no 'problem' the 'longlist' way.
PaulAds,
Congrats on your 100th post! Ow sorry, I see you feel relieved so maybe I was being a little to rude to ask directly like I did, I'm sorry fellow!
To all:
We need a host for the September SOTM, who wants to help?
Please don't forget to vote for the August SOTM, that will be closing by midnight. VOTE VOTE VOTE!!
MM
-
Hmmm, not sure that is going to have the desired effect, but maybe i am wrong.
If there is a long list it of around 20 songs then I doubt many will take the time to listen to them all which may mean voting suffers in three ways
1. Less overall votes
2. Voters making their choices without hearing all the songs and in some cases the best songs.
3. The votes will be spread over a greater number of songs meaning that it is highly likely that the winner may only have two or three votes and there would be a high chance of numerous songs filling the spot.
There was a large discussion on this when the SOTM was first brought up.

Aaah okay I didn't know that, you're absolutely right then, let's not re-invent the wheel... So next month we'll stick to the shortlist then, and we need a host who'll have time to compose one (and doesn't want to compete him-/herself). Voluteers? MM

I last hosted one in March this year so would prefer someone else to do next months as its a bit soon for me but if no one eles offers I will do it. But lets wait and see, and hopefully some kind soul will pick up the batton and I can defer my turn a bit more.

That's really kind of you Allan, but I'd suggest we'll continue searching for a volunteer who never (or way longer ago) hosted a SOTM...
So people please PM me or reply to this post if you want to volunteer hosting the upcoming SOTM September.
In the meantime: just a few hours left to vote for the SOTM August, just click your vote in the poll on top of this page!!
