Title: Forum open mic nights.
Post by: habiTat on August 23, 2013, 11:44:43 PM
It's been discussed before but nothing has been worked out.

Until now  ;D  ;D

Here is my idea, those who fancy a go 'on stage' at the forum bar, set yourself up with a webcam or video camera and record a mini gig, say two or three songs. Perform your favourite self penned songs live and unplugged. Then upload the video to YouTube and post the link in a new thread in the bar, with the title 'Open mic - yourname'

I thought maybe we could discuss and agree on a calendar for performances, ie every Friday or every other Friday so that we don't end up with a flood of videos and then nothing... For ages  :D

That way we could announce, say montydog or seriousfun or me, for example, will be 'performing' in the bar this Friday. The video can then be uploaded by the performer on that day and we can all watch/listen when we get time during the following week.

What do you think?

Who's up for it?

Did somebody mention my name?

Sounds like a great idea if only I knew how use my webcam and upload videos on to YouTube. :'(

Perhaps others with more technical knowledge could kick this off - I'd like to watch and listen to others performing.

I'd certainly take a look, so long as the dress code's not too strict and I'm allowed in with my trainers on.

Probably wouldn't take part though, I'll stick to writing the songs, I only sing on my own ones because I have to.

Wow, what a cool idea. I'll be a starter but I might be using a stunt double in case I pull a tendon playing guitar for three songs.

Cool, we have our first booking  ;D

Nice one Allan, when would you like to 'perform'?

Hi, great idea, i want to book a ticket....

and, perhaps we (mrs. DB and I) can do one of our aucoustic piano songs later on  ??? ??? ???(if i can persuade Mrs. DB)

in connection to this...sorry...to use this thread, but i have been saying, that perhaps one day...when the forum has its fifth birthday we could even have a party in London.....meet and greet forumites in real life  ??? ??? ??? perhaps have an open mic night and ending with a big jamm session of some kind????

edit: and adding one of my megalomanic ideas again...i have been thinking whether we could in some way have a fifth anniversarry and connect it to our project for homeless dogs......but i never came up with an idea that works because us gathering will only cost (us) money...but perhaps there are annual meetings of the charity organisation for homeless dogs.....do they need music for these events????

but: back to the online open mic idea, sorry for wandering off

i reckon everyone who posts songs up on here should do one - keep it simple no gimmicks just  strip your songs down to a guitar or piano and your vocals and stick them up on youtube for us all to watch - theres no excuses really why we all shouldnt all have a 2 /3 song session!

I agree with that, a stripped back version, just like if you were playing at your local pub.

I always prefer those acoustic sets when I've seen established bands play. I remember watching a video of an Oasis gig and towards the end, Noel played a few songs on his own, I think it was 'Talk Tonight' and 'Half the world away' tbh, it's probably that few minutes of that video which inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place.

Who else is up for this then?

Btw, Dutchy and Mrs DB unplugged would be AMAZING!!  :o

hey mate noel gallagher is agenuis in my eyes him and an acoustic guitar i defy anybody to come up with someone better! supersonic , slide away, listen up, d'you know what i mean get on them just him, vocal and an acoustic guitar!

its a challenge then i reckon for everyone on here to come up with some stripped down acoustic versions of their songs!

thats what its all about aint it , hey am gonna have a go!

go for it dutchbeat! he who dares!

What a great idea. I can't see any reason not to do it. I just can't see why it has not been done before. this has the potential to become huge, as I know that there are people out there who live in very remote places who find it impossible to perform in the normal way. I suspect that there are also song writers who are too shy to perform in public but might be able to record a slot and have it played  on youtube. I would like to do it myself but don't have the technology. but you have got me so fired up now I'm going to put that right.

Great stuff Daviod, I fall into the 'too shy' category myself  :D

Get yourself sorted with a video camera (even a smartphone will do it) and book yourself in.

I can't wait to get started  :)

This gets my vote

I too am a seasoned "bedroom performer" (so to speak...hehehe...  :-*  ) so this'd be a good outlet. But also useful for some critique on how you perform live!

How'd this work, logisitcally? We have one thread where we post the links? A new sub forum, what?

Haha bedroom performer, very good  :D

I think, if we had a thread set up in The Bar entitled 'Open Mic - next on stage' or something similar, we could use that to discuss and announce who will 'perform' and when (their video will be available)

As each act 'steps up' (maybe every other Friday) they can each launch their own thread (also in the bar) which could include a little introduction, any requests for feedback etc, and of course, the YouTube link to the video. That way, each performer will be able to get audience comments as people watch during the following two weeks until the next performer 'steps up'.

Any other thoughts/ideas?

This is a brilliant idea - why didn't someone think of it before? I'm definitely up for it - I've sorted out how to record myself with my camera and how to upload to my YouTube account so I'm rarin' to go. This Friday is a bit soon though; I'm sure someone else would like to go first but put me on the list who ever is organising the thread. Off to choose which songs to do and start practicing  :o

@Jess, that's an excellent idea, I'll look into it :)

@Monty, if we can't get anyone in for this Friday, do you want to go next Friday? We can start it fortnightly from then if so. It'd be great to get someone 'booked in' :)

OK, I'll do it Friday week (7th September) unless someone else would like that slot. Is it 2 songs or three?

If I manage to get my shit together for this coming Friday(31st) and no one else volunteers, I'll give it a go.

You have been warned!

I'm really looking forward to seeing you guys play live, it's gonna be great!

I should have some 'house to myself' time in the next couple of weeks so I'll try to get my 'gig' recorded as well, that way I can slot it in if/when we get an open mic Friday with no bookings.

I put some songs on you tube over the last month, and got a couple in reserve. Only played live as a bass player, and that was some 20-odd years ago so I'd be up for this, but not been on here for a while (aside from lurking) so put me at the bottom of the list!

That means we have our own little corner of The Bar to keep all our live performances together  ;D

Quick question here:

Does it have to be all acoustic? I'm trying to pick which songs to play when it's my turn (there's really not that many to choose from  ;D) and I thought one of them would sound better on electric than acoustic guitar.

It would still be live...

yeah just play on the electric, i reckon what this should be is just one instrument and vocal so its stripped down so could be any instrument

Excited to be performing in oct. Our room is just boxes at the moment, so hopefully we can dig out a mic, computer and guitar in time :)

Couple of questions:
- As it is 'open mic' we only need do a couple of songs right?

- I am toying with the idea of really doing it live, via something like UStream or LiveStream, but I dont know if you need some kind of special camera...All I have at the mo is the video setting on a digital camera....
May also need extra promotion so someone might tune in to it. What do you think?

I must say, I am really looking forward to seeing Monte and his performance. He is one of the guys who I think will really shine when he steps up to the plate. Habitat is another that we will be great. These two guys are so acoustically orientated that I be Believe they will be show stoppers.

Alan, I an hardly wait to see your show.

1, Yes, two or three songs, a 'mini-gig'

2, As for going fully live, it's up to you, I'd definitely think you'd need to post a recording of it as well though, for those of us that can't get to see it live. That was the beauty of the Youtube thing, with the two week interval between acts, we all get a chance to sit down and watch.

And like you say, you may need a good bit of plugging and promotion to get enough 'live' viewers to make it worthwhile.

(shhh, don't tell anyone but the other advantage of recording it and posting it on YT is that you can start again if you mess up  ;) )

I love the idea of having a 'true' online forum open mic; i think technology has caught up enough now to do this 'properly' - a live stream with multiple performers. There is lots of solutions out there for doing multiple live streams and switching between, but I imagine there is something better out there for multi-live streaming.

How it could work...
- 5-10 performers (or so) 'sign up' before the date to play 2-3 songs (depending on the number of performers). They need to have a web cam, mic etc...
- some kind of admin guy has to organise switching between the performers (& maybe introducing them etc)
- Everyone else gets a beer and watches the stream!

We would need to find some kind of live stream switching solution and then we could do it to facebook live or w/e

Looks like no one has posted here for awhile, so I will. This wasn't exactly an "open forum", but it was similar. Locally, we had a short-notice "variety show". People signed up in advance to perform, and people paid to get in to watch.

The variety turned out to be all music and included mostly vocalizing of one kind or another (we had one rapper). We also had a clarinet player and a violin player. A few singers used backing tracks for their singing. I had considered doing that but decided to play my guitar, because I need the practice.

I performed twice. First time around I sang two songs--"Where Do You Go, My Romeo? (https://soundcloud.com/caliamoko/where-do-you-go-my-romeo/s-nAIRJ)" and "I Need Room for My Legs (https://soundcloud.com/caliamoko/i-need-room-for-my-legs/s-bp4Ir)". The second time I chose something more serious: "Wall Seeker (https://soundcloud.com/caliamoko/wall-seeker-2)". All three were well received by our modest audience of 19 people. Although it was a little hard to tell, as small audiences tend to be very quiet in a self-conscious kind of way.

I know someone recorded it, so if I can get hold of a copy, I'll post my part. In spite (or maybe "because) of the small audience, I enjoyed it a lot.

Vicki
