Title: 12 Bar Blues Competition - ON HOLD UNTIL THE AUTUMN
Post by: habiTat on March 03, 2013, 08:52:28 PM
Dadada dadum..

I woke up this morning, everything was fine
Time to start the blues comp, yes it really is that time
But I don't know what I'm doing
No I don't know what to do...

Cos I never even wrote one..
Aint never wrote the blues.

So I'm asking for your help now, asking for a hand
If you know the blues or, you played them in a band
Get on with replying
And give us some principles..

Cos I never even wrote one..
Aint never wrote the blues.

Also what we need is, before we go too far
Some simple basic rules now, and a deadline for this task
Dutchbeat wants late April and
No rules but is that too much to ask..

Cos I never even wrote one
Aint never wrote the blues

So tell us what you want and, how we should proceed
I don't mind the running, but some help is what I need
Cos I don't know what I'm doing
No I haven't got a clue

Cos I never even wrote one
I aint never wrote the blues..

And I don't know what to do with those tossed salads and scrambled eggs
They're calling again....

Good Night Seattle, I love you

 :D

To sum up,
We need someone to write out a basic principle (examples of chord sequences/structure etc)
Are we all ok with no strict rules?
And is April 20th ok as a deadline?

Argh! What happened to 3 months per comp?! You and dutchy write fast, granted! I am in if we get three months again; if I only have till April I won't have time. Is everyone cool with a competetion a month?! Sounds like a big ask!

Cool way to introduce the comp tho Hab!  ;D

JN, three months is cool with me but Dutch was the only one to jump in with a date.

End of May? Thats fine with me, I have not a clue where to start on this one..  :D

yeah am in on this one like, longer the better i suppose forth deadline but be good to have something to use and play with in terms of chords structure and all that malarky just to get a good start?

Ok, we want a big uptake on this one. There has been a good amount of interest in this idea on the other threads. It'd be good to get a lot of our regulars on board, as well as the newbies, as many people as possible. May/June seems like an eternity away but if that's what suits you guys to do this justice, lets do that. If we say that there is NO LIMIT to the number of entries per person, anyone who writes fast can have multiple attempts if they want to.

I tell you what, June 3rd will be my 33rd birthday. I'll be feeling pretty blue on that day (another year older  :( ), and so maybe we should all aim to submit our finished songs on that day, we'll call it blue Monday  :D

That is also, (conveniently) exactly 3 months from now. ;D

All we need now is someone to help all us non-blues folk.

Can someone post a few examples of chord structures/sequences and generally explain the 'rule' of 12 bar blues?

This seems up my street

Here's a basic 12 bar pattern in Cmajor

C/C/C/C7/
F/F/C/C/

===============

Here's a slightly altered version

C7/C7/C7/C7/
F7/F7/C/A7/
D7/G7/C/G7//

===============

Here's a jazzy version

CMaj9,CMaj7/  CMaj9,CMaj7 /CMaj9,CMaj7/ Gm7,C9/
FMaj7        / Ebdim / C, DM7 /Ebm7, Em7/

Thank you Garys, that is something to work with

and to Stylus, sounds good, i reckon you are ready to join the competition!!!

but, if you want your music to be heard and commented on, you better put it in the review board as a seperate topic (but: forum rules dictate: only one track per week, so that the forum doesn't get flooded with new songs)

Excellent stuff, thanks Gary.

Are there any rules regarding rhythm and tempo, or is it a free for all? :)

To add to Gary's chords:
C CC CC CC C F C D± C CC CC CC C F C D± C CC CC CC - As used by Bowie in Gene Jeanie

Blues are often very simple and repetitive so delivery is key: they have to groove and have feel
You can holds chords ( eg 7th ) to create suspense.

Subject and lyrics normally downbeat often wry: eg
'Born under a bad sign

I been down since I begin to crawl

If it wasn't for bad luck,

I wouldn't have no luck at all'

:(

Hey Suzy,

This comp has been put on hold until Autumn.

Myself and Michael are currently sorting the details on the 'Summer Tunes' comp which will run first and launch in the next few days.

Feel free to post your song anyway, or hold it back, it's up to you.

And I hope you enter our new comp, it's gonna be good!!  ;D

hab..
