Title: Blueprint challenge - Lyrics needed
Post by: habiTat on September 05, 2012, 11:35:28 PM
Hello everyone, I started this in the bar but with mihkay's advice I've given it some thought and here it is.

The Challenge

Everyone create a song (ie. melody, style, rhythm, tempo etc.) based on a standard set of lyrics (The Blueprint)

Compose your interpretation, record it, and post it. Lets see how differently we all think when presented with the same thing. Be it reggae, rock, folk or swing, every entry should sound different.

There are two parts to this. Firstly we need someone to offer up a 'blueprint' song. Ideally it needs to be fairly simple ie. two or three verses and a chorus (maybe some kind of bridge as well if you want) It doesn't matter what its about, as long as it flows fairly well and will enable people to work with it.

If we get any submissions I'll pick one out of a hat and that can become the blueprint song. If not I'll post one of my unfinished compositions ;)

Then, once the blueprint is announced, people can start work on their creations, I'm thinking with a two week deadline. I've no idea how to do polls etc on here but maybe then we could vote for a winner???

I'm thinking as I'm typing a bit here so any suggestions or tweaks would be welcome :)

If this sounds like your kind of thing, stick your lyrics on here and once we've got a few to choose from I'll stick 'em in the hat.

You can use this if you like it`s simple and flows.

if there was  still something,,something, left to prove...
don`t you think,.. i wouldn`t make that first move,,
when am i never there, to hold a hand

i have nothing left to prove
and it`s a grove ,i fit in to so easily
so pleasingly ,understand me..babe

and when you break it all down
into the  itty bitty parts..

you still can`t find the piece
where all the trouble starts..

so i will just play your games
and fall in to your arms..
(chorus)
cos,you know i`m only shining my
copper coated heart..

......
i`m a good soldier
and i will soldier on

and if you need a friend
 until the battles won
i`m on your side
till the final charge..
and if your order is to love you
that wish is my command.

(chorus)
cos,you know i`m only shining my
copper coated heart..
...
(MIDDLE 8)
and i glow like  gold
when the sun is out
yes i glow like the gold
in a fire lit sky
on a summers night
and i feel it so right..
feels so right

in my .......
copper coated heart..

cos you know i`m only shining
and you know i`m  only shining

 ..my copper coated heart...

and i will just play your games
and fall in to your arms..

i will join this competition, can be fun to hear all the different  versions and interpretations

but, do we get lyrics and chords?

but no melody?

or just lyrics?

i am fine with both options

Initially i was thinking lyrics and chords but I think it might be too restrictive. Sometimes when I read over peoples lyrics I can almost imagine the tune/melody before I've listened to it. I think we'll have a more diverse set of recordings at the end if we say that the 'blueprint' is the lyrics only.

So yes, to confirm, once selected, it'll be the lyrics you have to stick to, everything else is open to creative interpretation.

Great to have you on board :) This is gonna be good...

Yep I like those lyrics as well stc, I'll leave it until, say, sunday night, see if we get any more offers, give others a chance to get involved, then I'll dig the hat out and get this thing going :)

Sounds like fun, maybe all the links should be put up on the same day so that people aren't influenced by other peoples work.
would it be up to the people participating where and how many times the chorus is used ?

Like i said,,they can be used , if not no worries...they were written with a female singer in mind though...so you boys might need to get in touch with your feminine side :-*.. :D

Ok peeps, about 24 hours left if you want to submit lyrics for the Blueprint Challenge. If we get no more submissions by this time tomorrow we'll be using STC's kindly donated words...

Tick Tock.... :)

Excellent! So glad to have you guys on board :)

Right, I'll officially start a new thread in a couple of hours,(in case anyone is just about to post their own lyrics to go in the hat) and announce it properly. Just to answer your questions, I reckon minor tweaks to the structure are allowed ie. repeating the chorus but try to keep faithful to the script. (If you're really struggling to find a way to use a line, the odd omission would be ok) But don't just grab one line and repeat it over and over, ignoring the rest of the song ;)

As for the timescale, I was initially thinking a couple of weeks. Now, I don't know how busy you guys are, if you'd like it to be longer, let me know asap. The trouble with leaving it too long is that people will just forget about it, too short and they'll not bother. Maybe three weeks???

Andy has a point about posting your entries as well so I'll probably ask that submissions are held back until a set day so we don't inadvertantly influence each others work... good thinking ;)

An finally, in the interest of fairness, THIS IS THE LAST CALL FOR LYRICS SUBMISSIONS.

i am planning on doing something weird  :P

dusting of my ancient vocoder

that does qualify as singing, doesn'it?

but the idea of songwriters making a song with the same lyrics is good,

would be a nice challenge for established musicians and bands
or for a tv show with upcoming "talents"

to see them all work for a week or so from the same starting point ("the blueprint lyrics")

and perhaps make a full cd with 8 or 10 versions of the same lyrics on totally different song

well, i like that idea...

Love that idea! Ahem, copyright and royalties this way please ;)

So glad you guys are into this  ;D, this is something (if successful) that could work on an annual or bi-annual basis, each time with a new Blueprint, and each time a completely new set of challenges.

Good stuff :)
