Title: Fear - Ashes for Dreams
Post by: MonnoDB on July 09, 2022, 12:34:53 PM
Hello campers!

Hope all are well and enjoying the summer...

A gentle number from myself and the fabtastic @Jambrains (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19875) ... Definitely more stripped back than our usual fare, JB's interpretation and execution of this one has really gotten me in the feels from his very first version.. blew me away tbh - I just love what he's done with it.. admittedly biased though I am, it's been the usual fantastic journey from beginning to end.

It started off life as the line "Only the brave feel fear...." out of a conversation with a friend..

As always, please let us know if there's anything that pokes at your ears - and we thank you in advance for taking the time to listen!

Karen.

I want you to save me
It’s a choice that I made, dear
Don’t push me away
I know you’re afraid
But only the brave feel fear

I want you to see me
So look in my eyes, dear
With the trust that you’ll find
You’ll make up your mind
Please be brave for me

The pictures of what you’ve lost
Fill your dreams when you close your eyes
The answer is never behind you
The past will find you reasons to hide

So how do you feel
Trapped or free, dear?
The time has come to stay or run
So please run to me

And I’ll be waiting here
As long as it takes, my dear
There’s nobody else
To take your place
I believe in you and me

The pictures of what you’ve lost
Fill your dreams when you close your eyes
The answer is never behind you
The past will find you reasons to hide

The deeper the love
The greater the pain
And the fear of the loss
Overshadows the gain
So don’t let the past
Mean that you’ll never love again

The pictures of what you’ve lost
Fill your dreams when you close your eyes
The answer is never behind you
The past will find you reasons to hide

Hello
I have enjoyed your delicate and special way of singing the story. A delight, I can not say anything else that is a beautiful and solid song.
I have enjoyed it very much.

Stay well

Yo folks.

Karen sounding vulnerable in this one.

It's a great line,'only the brave feel fear'.

Sensitive and tastefully done.

@MonnoDB (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19820),

'aint' that true, "the deeper the love, the greater the pain." A fine and very  interesting vocal melody here. Lyrical highlights for me are "the answer is never behind you. The past will find you reasons to hide." surely observations of life and relationships that have been learned from experience.

The piano is  beautiful and those little guitar touches too are sublime. The song takes centre stage above the tasteful instrumentation.

Well done team.

Listened to this a few times now @MonnoDB (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19820) and @Jambrains (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19875) I've headed down to the basement this evening for a few reviews. The lead vocal is just superb. Sounds very vulnerable but yet again powerful and strong if that makes sense. There's some great little stops and starts and change of direction.  Just so professionally put together, lovely piano motif. This really is top quality stuff  :)

Perfectly balanced track... everything in the production is crystal clear.  Really tasty bass in it, and as has been said, your vocals really shine through Karen... there's a very prominent vibrato in your delivery in this one, that is very characterful.  Great stuff.  (BTW I also have to write a song called 'Fear' as part of my bookshelf project... think you've set the bar incredibly high!! Maybe I'll just nick this one...)

@PaulyX (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21034) ha! No nicking our song, right😂? Yeah we have a name for that vibrato.. I can’t/don’t control it, @Jambrains (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19875) often tames it, maybe less this time. Agree re bass and perhaps you’re referring to the baritone guitar also? Thanks for your lovely comments!! 🙂

@pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) yes I think I know what you mean… I did go quite gentle on this one. Thanks so much for your listens and lovely comments!

@Wicked deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22916) thanks so much - your comments are really lovely and insightful. You’re right there is experience informing the lyrics, but not necessarily directly. Thanks so much for your comments.

@Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061) - yes it’s a great line - I’ve credited it to my pal - it was an interesting conversation sparked by a discussion around me sharing music actually!! Thanks for your lovely comments!

@moraamarolaloba (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21233) gracias molto z- you are always so kind and supportive! Thank you so much!

@Alex Kohlgrüber (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20046) vielen Dank!!

@shadowfax (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20024) - had to look up Fotheringay - LOVE Sandy Denny so any reminder is a thrill for me. Let’s face it she’s in a league of her own!

Thanks all!!!

K

As always when you two get together, it's a cracking song. A lovely melofy (that was reminding me of another song that I couldn't put my finger on). As always, well executed.

Hi Karen/JB,

Hope you're both good.

Very nice change of pace.
The stripped down nature really works.
Very delicate musically. The vocal dominates - but in a good way.
Really strong chorus - great job Karen.

All the best.
