Yesterday evening on the Zoom call, @ChrisPrice (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22723) @Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) and myself were kicking around some ideas for a new songwriter challenge. I think that everyone enjoyed the Alien Genre challenge last year and the addition of the "Spinning wheel of fate" gave the challenge additional impetus and interest.
So, just kicking this off for input - Nothing has been decided yet, but the loose idea was to select a number of "Headlines" or News stories that we could add to the spinning wheel and then allocate one to each participant - The challenge would be to write a song to the particular headline or story allocated to you !!
I would dust down the spinning wheel and we could allocate the stories "live" on the Zoom call on Friday 16th April
Who's in ???
As I say, this is just a loose idea at the moment so any ideas on how to run this show would be much appreciated
Cheers
John

Really like this idea...hopefully we can get a dozen or so who are up for having a crack at it 😀
-
Sounds interesting. Count me in. :)
-
This sounds like a great idea and might be just what I need to get writing again
Count me in!

Yes, we had a good discussion about this last night and I think there is great mileage in this to increase participation amongst forum members. Are we doing this as individuals or are we teaming up with cowriters. Perhaps we could do a combination i.e. write our own entry and also submit a collaboration. I'm definitely up for this and urge as many people as possible to get on bard with this project.
Paul
-
@Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) If there is an option for a collaboration on this, I would love to work alongside you. It think perhaps it's long overdue for you and I to write together. I'm happy to write lyrics to your musical backing. Maybe you could write to mine. Alternatively, we could take turns to write contrasting sections of the song to compliment the finished product. You or I could sing or perhaps we could share vocal duties. However you would like to approach this would be welcome to me. I'm happy to be guided by you.
Sen me a PM if you'd like to do this.

I failed to deliver the goods on the stolen riff competition so I better get my ass into gear this time! I'm in:)
-
Great 👍 Looks like 6 in already. Roll up, roll up. It's going yo be a fascinating challenge and a bit of fun 😀
-
2020 was indeed a dull year. Until the incredible spinning wheel came along to bring much needed excitement. So, without the spinning wheel I am out. But with the amazing spinning wheel’s inclusion who could be out? Not me! So I am definitely in! ;D But no fixing it this year @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) ;)
-
I'm up for possibly providing some lyrics if anyone would want them.
-
Bumping this again to encourage further participation. If anyone wants to throw a few more headlines into the ring, all would be welcome. Perhaps with enough titles, we could each have two spins of the wheel to increase our options.
Paul
-
@Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) What headlines have you got so far? Do they have to be current/recent/any time at all headlines?
-
Hi @Sterix (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22024),
I believe that John @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) is collating the title. He has produced an initial list and I've also sent a collection of titles to him. Why not throw one or two into the mix by way of personal message to John for inclusion on the wheel of fortune spin so that tiles can be allocated to writers.
Anyone else reading this message should feell welcome to join in the competition!
Paul
-
Yes, please do, although headlines won't be revealed until spinning wheel night !
-
@pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) I’d be up for this and a collab. @MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274) ?
-
Great :) I suggest we have 1 solo entry and 1 collab allowed
So far we have................

@Jamie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18856)
Keep Em coming :)
-
The list would look better with a 10th participant. What are you waiting for? Let's make this a memorable competition!
Paul
-
Looking promising. :)
-
Weelllll....I'm interested but would have a hard time completing a project right now. When would the deadline be? Maybe someone would consider collaborating with me, if such person is okay with me providing ideas for word tweaks, maybe melody, and doing some singing???
We just got into our new house yesterday. There are boxes everywhere full of mystery items. Various people have helped put some things away, so it's a treasure hunt to find them. So I'll be spending most of my productive time finding things, organizing things, putting things away, deciding not to keep things....
But if I can manage anything, and doing a little writing would provide nice breaks from the tedium, I am interested.
-
Yep, thanks for the invite @Neil C (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18856). I’d be happy to give a collab a go. We can catch up about it after the Spinning Wheel night.
Not sure I will have time to write a solo entry too, as I am supposed to be writing prose at the moment.
@pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) are headlines from local papers, plus more trivia stories, allowed to be submitted, or is it all national/world news and serious stuff? Ta.
-
@MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274) The headlines are from Tabloids, local newspapers, some pretty straight, some pretty weird but I can't reveal any more details as that would spoil the fun. If you have any then please PM me and I'll add them to the list :)
-
Hi guys, never done anything like this before ie writing to a 'given' idea and doing it to a deadline.....what could go wrong. I'd give it a go....
:o :P :-X 8)

Great stuff @Jamie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19125) - Added :)

How could any fun-loving songwriter forum member resist?
>90% know the answer 😀
-
Hey @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) , why am I on the wheel twice? I feel like a schoolboy in detention ;) Then again, even I don’t have a memory that long...
Nice wheel though. But these sorts of things should be spun by beautiful assistants in glittery dresses, not a scruffy southern bloke in an unironed t-shirt and dragging on a fag! Just saying...make an effort at least if you are doing it. ;D
-
You're on there twice @MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274) as a solo competitor and as a collab with NeilC. Anyway, it's only an example of the fun night ahead a week on Friday. Plus, I'm a Midlander, not a Southerner and I have got an iron you cheeky bustard ;D
-
Yeah course @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) as a Cov lad I am sure your Two Tone gear is always impeccable. I have a very old PC with a blurry screen, sorry, so can’t always appreciate the sartorial splendour of other Zoom participants.
Anyway, the revamped wheel is cool! ;)
-
@pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) , great work John on the enhanced wheel.
Please put me on for a solo as well as the Liverpool bard @MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274)
:-)

Hi John, I'll try to join tonight for a bit!
Cheers
Jamie
-
Wow @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269), only four sleeps to Spinning Wheel night, it’s hard to contain the excitement ; I thought I’d bump this so maybe a few others would see this so that they didn’t miss out on this epic opportunity to join in.
Sign up folks, don’t miss out!
Have you got the WD40 ready in case that old wheel gets stuck again, John?
-
It's a brand new set of wheels @MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274) just waiting to be spun 8)
-
Two days left before spinning wheel night !!! It's so frigging exciting - I've just got the wheels primed up but there's plenty of room for some more participants in this fun challenge. Just add to this thread or PM me if you're up for it
Each participant will be allocated two headlines and can choose one of them as the theme of a song and that is of course open to interpretation
I'm sure that we'll get some fascinating entries :)
-
Unfortunately won't be there as I'm working late :(
-
Never mind Paul. We'll make sure that you're allocated with something suitable ;D ;D
-
One more sleep.
And then...
THE WHEEL ;D ;D ;D 8) 8) 👍👍👍🕺🕺🕺🏆🏆🏆
-

Ha ha...here we go. I'm on the case. :)
-
Aye...me too...I'm having "Whirlwind Romance"
An idea popped into my head as soon as the wheel stopped spinning...so I decided to go with that...
-
I enjoyed last night’s wheel spinning, well played @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) and thanks for organising this. ;)
-
I think I got the short end of the stick... Sure there was some cheating going on!
-
A donkey it is, with a cowboy hat and a pair of 6 shooters! :o
-
You know what... Since I've got TWO damn-terrible headlines to work with that aren't exactly stirring the creative juices, I'm just going to have to go ALL IN and try to come up with something that incorporates BOTH of them.
No, I'm not drunk (yet!) but it's just gotta be done. It's totally messed up, I know, but I pride myself on being a good lyricist so... yep. I'm probably screwed here.
So, what the hell! Challenge accepted!
@CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) You may regret offering to be my partner in crime for this one because we may just end up in music jail for this! :D
[edit] Written it! Inspiration suddenly struck me and I wrote a rap song. Mainly the "pie" headline but with a little bit of the other thrown in. Challenge not only accepted but, I feel, accomplished. At least on the lyrics front. :P
-
Yes, I'm going to incorporate both my headlines!! It could well turn out to be a ludicrous ditty!! I have ideas already and I'm going to start work on it tonight. I think I may have to invest in some fine ale!! ;D
-
Thanks @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269)
I am also going with the first idea I had for my headline (I have chosen “Intense Rivalry”)
It looks like it is going in a jazzy direction! Who knew!?
-
Thanks @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) for organizing this. Poor @Jamie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19125) & @ChrisPrice (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22723) have had a bit of a mare there. ;D . Don`t think the world is ready for a rap from me yet & I can`t think of anything to rhyme with Weinstein (apart from fine time) so I think its going to be the other one "Times up for Happy Hour" which sounds like a @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) title for starters so I`m going to start hitting some clowns & grating my balls to get me in a vicious mood . :D
-
I'm happy with my headlines. Whether the forum will be able to cope with what I do with them might be another matter!! ;D
-
Now this is going to be interesting....... I'm going with Time Is Of The Essence
-
Just about finished my solo entry and man has it brought about an intriguing and very cool surprise. Long live the donkey! ;D
-
Likely to take me a few days yet but it's coming along!! I hope to have it done before next Friday's Zoom which I'll attend if I possibly can - or if I dare!! ;D
-
Happy to say, I have one in the bank (no pun intended) courtesy of "The Donkey." ;D
Do we all release the songs at the same time or is there a different instruction?
-
Myself and @MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274) are off and starting with lyrics :-)
:-)
-
Sorry guys..when have these songs got to be ready?
-
I think they were look at end of May. But don't quote me on that.
-
I saw somewhere @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) said May 31.
-
Yes, 31st May - That gives us all a bit of time. With regards to releases, maybe we choose a schedule like we did on the Binladeda challenge where one song is released every 2 or 3 days ? Other ideas welcome of course :)
-
@5 guys named Lars (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22535)
Hi all, I have no idea where to start with either of these topics......and I can't do 'humour' so I'll have to make it serious, and neither of the topics lend themselves to serious writing.........
:o :-X Leave it with me
Cheers ;D
Jamie
-
This is a fascinating challenge. I had absolutely no idea what to do with my Headline and then, lo and behold, this afternoon something just dropped out of the ether. So I'm up and running :)
-
I'm hoping to have mine completed later this week but I'll wait for instructions before I post it. ;D
-
I’ve outlined a lyric, it might come to something...... ???
Jamie ;D
-
Just about finished. Maybe we can discuss the posting rules on Friday evening ?
-
I'll try and attend this Friday. Ideas came flooding in as soon as I read mine! Whether they are good ideas remains to be seen! I'm having fun with it ;D

Any last-minute entries?
It seems to have come at a bad time...I've never seen the forum so quiet...
-
Unfortunately “real life” has beaten me on this one so I will not be entering a solo effort this time
It seems to have come at a bad time...I've never seen the forum so quiet...
I think this is a sign of the Covid restrictions being lifted (which will hopefully continue)
I certainly know I am in a stage of “Flux” at the moment and I hope everyone is spending the time reconnecting with friends and family
I now will settle down when we get back to (a new?) normal - and these real life experiences will produce a new wave of inspiration for songs that will posted here for review in the future...
