Title: How Much
Post by: PaulAds on December 29, 2020, 10:09:58 PM
Just managed to squeeze in another one...I think that's 15 I've written in 2020...and this one was a bit of an odd one. I've not written anything for a couple of months...but I had a bit of a tune kicking about for a little while and thought I'd put any concerns about what else it might have sounded like to one side and just get stuck into it. I didn't have much in the way of lyrics until tonight so I wrote 80% of it straight off and recorded the two vocals in about an hour. It's a bit of a crazy rant...but it just sort of captured the way I feel about the crock of shit that was 2020. It's a little rough and ready...but I'm glad to have knocked it out anyway...did me good to let off a little steam  ::)

How Much

How much do I hate this shit?
Let me count the ways
I don't just hate the things they do
I also hate the things they say
How much is it all fucked up?
How long have you got?
Must have seen it coming
Evidently not

Placing your trust
In self centred psychos
Seems we can't wait
To seal our own fate
Or you wish it away
Swallow the black pill
You'd rather comply
Curl up and die

Maybe you'd like to
Follow the science
Back to the day
They threw us away
Picked up the cheque
And sided with tyrants
You can't understand
They're part of the plan

They shepherd the flock
You don't even notice
The mark of the beast
Until you've been fleeced
By then it's too late
We're into the end game
You bleat yourself hoarse
They grab the mint sauce

How much do I hate this shit?
Let me count the ways
I don't just hate the things they do
I also hate the things they say
How much is it all fucked up?
How long have you got?
Must have seen it coming
Evidently not
I think we've lost the plot
We'll suss it when we're taken out and shot...

I knocked up a video for it...

Best wishes to everyone for 2021 (which I suspect might well be even worse)

great to hear you again
some things need to be said
and that's where you come in! lol

inspiring stuff
I wonder what you're addressing here
the policy makers on covid restrictions or brexit
both have been very costly for me

all the best buddy!

Don't sugar the pill! Just come on out and say what you feel :-) I like the earthy, direct and anger fueled energy of this. Your voice is perfect to deliver this sort material - kind reminds me of Elvis Costello.
Interesting song and a fair reflection of the crazy times we are enduring.

Excellent. I couldn't have put it better. A great song as well. Delivered with a suitably angry tone. Well done. Have a safe New Year. :)

@PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) Snarling, snappy, snotty and delivered with venom through clenched teeth. You are the absolute master of this type of song Paul. As ever the lyrics are well thought out and delivered perfectly - The whole song shudders and shakes you to the bone. Top, top quality and a fitting finale to 2020

p.s Don't you just love local radio. This morning they cheerily announced the fantastic news of the approval of the new Oxford astrazenica virus !!! Shit,  not another one

HNY  :) :) :)

Love the way it goes straight in direct without intro. Good commitment in the vocals  and I like guitar tone and playing too!  I remain hopeful for an improving 2021, but I agree it’s gonna take a while take out of the starting blocks  :-\

I think your song has been a whole session in the psychoanalyst. You have been at ease !!! Very catchy and eloquent ah! and also very realistic, this year has brought all kinds of ... for everyone.
I hope that 2021 will have changes for the better, not because of those who lead us, but because of what we will do.
Cheer up @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253)

Hi @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) 😎

I’m so glad you squeezed another one in...and it’s a belter!

It’s angry , snarling and your visceral delivery only adds to the protest🥳 conversely its very melodic and the chorus is hooky...I love the stripped back chorus at 1.45...

You deserve to headline Glasto with this mate and I for one would be pogoing up and down in unison ❤️

Your 15 to my one Paul!

This is classic PaulAds from the guitar-driven singalong to the biting lyric which I am in full accord with for sure. What a fuck-up the country is today....the government I should say.
Cheeky nod to one of our beloved lyric writers too in the opening lines.
Wish I had your facility with lyric writing....maybe that's not fair...maybe I just don't try hard enough.
(No, you're good at it. I'm not.)

A perfect protest song to see out the year.
We need more protesting!

Who could ignore this wonderful song and production (despite the naughty words lol)?

Paul, this is direct both musically and lyrically.  It demonstrates your gift for memorable music and lyrics.  The guitar and bass (guitar especially) are the stars of the show.  Love your writing my friend!

I’m going to have to bookmark this song so that I can pogo about and shout a bit - it perfectly sums up the anger and frustration that bubbles up from time and this will help release some of that emotion! Succinctly put!👌

This had me hooked from the first line, and the music has too over the last week or so..earworming in on me, the little bastard.
Lovely work channeling Elizabeth Browning 2020..would like to think she`d agree with you if she lived through this load of bollocks.
Just read the lyrics for the first time now & so many great lines. Love the "evidently not" hook and the last line sums it all up.
Welcome back @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) , another quality song.

Hi Paul,

Can't add much to what's been said tbh.  A great rocker with a very appropriate message.  Never believe a word from them!

"How much do I hate this shit?"

Hahahaha, this is a @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) song alright!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D
I don't know anyone else that can be so angry and funny at the same time.
That aside, a solid rocker, great lyrics (as always) and that vox is sooo perfect for these kinds of songs (which they don't do much of these days unfortunately)
'nuff said, great stuff, back for another spin!

Hi Paul, well my ex partner’s mate opened a hair salon called Curl Up & Dye, and she was a bitter bitch too  ;D Actually the ‘How much’ section is very catchy, almost radio ready...but you probably won’t get on Radio Solent with this, even with a good word in from John.

I admire how you can channel your anger into a song though, in a controlled way, I mean it’s not 1977 anymore, if you’re gonna do it it has got to be with skill. Obviously you achieve this and I’m right behind you with my placard, I think we all need a good scream at the moment.

Some really enjoyable lyrics in there, I especially like how you developed the sheep theme, ending in mint sauce. Clever black humour, as I say, not just ranting.

Very punchy throughout, looking at the comments everyone is on board with the need to snarl a bit too, and you see to have captured a mood of the moment with this. Shame about the video though, with its paucity of dancing elves  ;D

Hi Paul, HNY! This is definitely in your style, some nice evocative chords and a snarly delivery. Anyway, even if things are bad, it could have been worse......Look across the pond.
Nice one mate, suits your vocal style and guitar sound.

Cheers

There have been songs with no chorus, songs with choruses that change, songs with choruses are follow on from the verses - and here comes one with about three choruses (or parts that could be choruses and on their own would be the highlights of other songs).

If I came for the hooks, I stayed for the craft - science and tyrants, hoarse, mint sauce, to name a few.

Sounds like a "fun" song to sing and produce - really we shouldn't be getting this from you for free.
