Title: Cover Version Challenge ?
Post by: pompeyjazz on December 19, 2020, 02:42:13 PM
We discussed this last night on the Zoom chat. Would anybody be up to a cover version challenge ? Just canvassing opinion to start with and get some ideas  :)

I do hope that this challenge is accepted.  It will be great to devote our creativity to this one.  There are millions of wonderful songs that we can all learn from and perhaps enhance with a brand new interpretation.

Man I love a cover...count me in...😍😎

Couldn’t help plug these two...apologies 😆

https://soundcloud.com/andrewcruse/live-it-up-mental-as-anything-cover

I posted this on a mental as anything forum and Greedy’s fiancé contacted me and said she wished he was still alive to hear my version - that’s my greatest musical achievement to date 🤣 and then Rangers have adopted it as an official anthem so I’ve been flooded by listens on soundcloud by there fans...which isn’t ideal for a Celtic season ticket holder 🤣

Grim news tonight with another lockdown...hope everyone is safe...I’m getting hammered tonight but it’s hard not to be scared again...stay safe everyone ❤️

It’s great to be part of this forum again 🤩

Oh man! I totally spaced out the forum chat! I am so bummed!

I'd love to get in on a cover challenge, and I would prefer to collaborate with someone. I probably couldn't do it otherwise, but who knows. It would be interesting to try.

I'd tentatively put my hat in the ring as a collab... would love to do a mostly slowed-down version of Ultravox's "We Stand Alone".

Great. Looks like this one is a goer.  I just thought of a song that I've been wanting to cover for years and had a bash this evening. I've gone from tier 2 yesterday to tier 4 tomorrow which means by my reckoning, I'll be in tier 9 on Christmas day. I wonder what that will involve ? Maybe solitary confinement and bread and water if I'm lucky ?

Excellent, John...I’ve been having a doodle through some possible contenders too...really looking forward to doing this...assuming we can get enough interest for it to take off.

Anybody else fancy it?

Great stuff, folks!

Can we get a few more interested? This seems like a brilliant idea to me.

I just figured which song I'm going to do...

I've spent a couple of hours putting together a drum track for it. It was a massive hit...and hopefully might come as a surprise. Assuming you recognise what it is/was  :P

Ah ! I'm guessing it's an ABBA song then  :)

Not without a fight :)

I'm just about to commit the schoolboy error of recording an acoustic rhythm guitar track for it with 80% of a bottle of plonk down my neck. I seem to have almost doubled the tempo of the original too...just to be on the safe side.

EDIT: Got a bit carried away and did the whole thing. Just a vocal to put on there now. It must be great to have an instrumental track ready for the vocal...and to look at the microphone as a chef would do to one of those squirty things when about to put the icing on the cake...rather than regarding it as a noose that you are obliged to hang yourself with every time you want to record a song...

I think a few of us will just knock up new cover versions of songs we fancy reworking...while the rest of the forum roll their eyes and potentially dislocate their scrolling thumbs 😀

Would you fancy doing one? It'd be good to have you on board...your superb version of Billy Ocean's Red Light Spells Danger still sticks in my mind!

I want to do "Only You", like the Platters did it. Anyone want to produce and mix it for me? I did find a backing track, but, while singing with one of those is nice enough for a live performance, in a recording I don't think it sounds like my voice is mixed in. Because it isn't, I suppose....

Cool with me 😀 I’m still hoping we can get a few more to take part...who wouldn’t fancy having a pop at doing a cover version?

I thought the idea employed in the @kafla (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6905) binladeda challenge was brilliant...where we post them every couple of days...fancy doing that again?

I need to do a couple of tweaks to mine...but I think I’ll be ready to drop it on the forum anytime soon...I’m definitely up for a collab too...if anyone will have me...preferably something I don’t have to sing on 😀

Thank you @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) ! I love that song and can really get into it. I didn't actually get too carried away this time, but I only sang it once the whole day and that was it.

I'd love to do a collab with you if all I have to do is sing! Something in my limited vocal range, though. Maybe something doo-woppy or reggae or disco or bluesy....or old crooner type. I'm old and I like old music....  8) ;D

IF any of that appeals to you. No worries if it doesn't. I have plenty going on without it. But it would be fun!!

Hello everyone! I’ve been busy with a quiet Christmas and a project so not been on here for a couple of weeks.  Look like there’s a few songs I’ve missed so I’ll work my way through them.

This sounds an interesting challenge so if I can, I’ll give it a go.  Lockdown permitting, I’m a bit busy at the moment but I love covers so hopefully I’m in 👍👍

This is my version of ELO’s Steppin Out

Hope you like it, I’ve always loved the way Jeff Lynne writes and his choice of instruments, and the piano part was interesting for me. It’s such a sad sad song...

Hope you dig.

Post by: PaulAds on January 06, 2021, 02:00:46 PM
Very cool, Rich! Did you have a pair of oversized gradient-lens sungoggles on too?

Jeff Lynne has written a ton of fantastic stuff. No top ten of mid-late 70's was complete without one of their epics. I had a lot of early exposure, as my brother was a massive fan when we were growing up...in fact, our lad loved the way P̶u̶c̶c̶i̶n̶i̶ they laid down a tune...and V̶e̶r̶d̶i̶ ELO were always creeping from his room  :P

This is a great, reflective version...electric piano is super. Your excellent, heartfelt vocal adds a lot to the sentiment here. Drums are very cool...I could never understand his drum thing...he always seemed to love that Beatles-style drum/hi-hat sound. I remember listening to "Hold on Tight" feeling sad that their light seemed to have just about gone out...and thinking that Bev Bevan must have died...and they only had a couple of bars of drums recorded for the song...so they just looped that and chopped it abruptly at the end. Like when Ye Olde Soviet Presidents had croaked, but nobody wanted to admit it...so they'd just whack them in the freezer until Parade Day, at which point they'd wheel them out, stand them on the balcony with a hat-stand up the back of their overcoat and get someone to lift a gloved arm every couple of minutes as the ICBM's rolled through Red Square.

Excellent cover version...who's next?

@PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) - Thanks Man, yip, I never take 'em off...  I know what you mean about the drums, in fact I tried to get that snare sound (acme xla3 yet again) ( @PeteS (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22588) - You might be interested....) always sounded like someone thrashing a dustbin with a stick...I actually paid President Bresnev to do a session for me on the drums, so I stuck a couple of Vic Firths in his frozen claws (trying not to laugh/get entangled in at his HUGE Denis Healey eyebrows) and he did me proud in a sort of dead soviet leader/Roland 808 kind of way.

It was a rare few weeks of actually enjoying practicing the piano.

What's next?  Who knows....

Here's my cover. I usually write and record guitar rock of one kind or another but I thought I'd have a stab at something slightly outside the box. This song goes back to the late 1960's and was a chart success in the UK for The Showstoppers who came from Philadelphia USA. It's been covered by one or two acts over the years though not recently as far as I know. The most successful cover was by American rockers J Geils Band in the early 70's which I thought was bloody awful!! Here's my version of Ain't Nothin' But A Houseparty. I built the track up from scratch - so it's not based around a commercial midi file. The Drums, keys and brass are vsti's. The vocals, guitars and bass are all real.

https://app.box.com/s/38acux6ymkg5rr5a5ezcq09uk2bgv28s

I normally use Soundcloud or similar but I wasn't sure about copyright so used The Box for this.

Hi Chris...that's a great song...can't say I've heard it before.

Do you play drums yourself? Was that a mic'd up acoustic kit?

Just interested to know...I seem to have developed a bit of a drum sound fascination of late :)

Everything about it sounds top drawer. You did a great job on this.

@PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253)
Thanks very much for your kind words. I don't usually record covers but I always fancied a stab at this one. The song was quite big back in the day, and it was popular with northern soul fans too, but it seems to have disappeared off the radar since.

It isn't a real drum kit. I used XLN Audio Addictive Drums on this track + Toontracks EZ Drummer Latin Percussion set. I programed the drums myself. I can play real drums, albeit at a fairly basic level, and that gives me the ability to think drummer when I'm recording if you know what I mean. I like to make the kit sound as real and live as possible, especially on my own songs. Likewise any keys and brass sounds. The guitars and bass are real instruments. The bass is actually my weapon of choice though I've also played guitar and drums in real bands over the years. :)

There’s some absolutely amazing work being posted on here in the past few hours.

@paulads I loved your version of that George M classic, especially the biting guitar sound and the pounding rhythm. You have given a pop masterpiece a cutting edge, without losing the soulfulness and feeling of the song. Really interesting. And fantastic too!

@kafla (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6905), you sound great on this and what a first class deconstruction. That version would take the charts even today, total quality. It takes a lot of guts to take on Ms Moyet for vocal excellence, but your distinctive pop voice is right up there. It wins you over in mere seconds!

@Melusine2 (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22580) that is a very powerful and totally amazing cover. So artistic and different, but the best thing about it is the dramatic performance. The highlight of that is your own vocal performance which really scales all the heights. Awesome indeed!  :D

@CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928)

Great vocal delivery of a classic song.

@Cowparsley man,

I haven’t heard this sone before but it has all the hallmarks of an ELO number, Lovely harmonies. Big Beatle influence too.  Cool track.

@Chris Price,

So much work lavished on this.  Once again, it’s one I haven’t heard before.  Detailed production.  I love the backing vocals!

@Paul (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=3422) Ads,  Unmistakeably a funeral crasher cover.  Trademark guitars which are really good bu the way.  This would be an excellent live number to play.  You never dissapoint!

@Kafla,  I prefer this to the original.  Lovely vocals.  Excellent slow paced version of the Yazoo electronic number that benefits from subtle strings.

@Melusine2 (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22580)

Great song and fantastic sultry vocal.  It’s always a great pleasure to hear your beautifully expressive voice.

Heres my slowed down stripped bare version of the Peter Serstadt classic, 'Where DO You Go To'.  I hadn't realised how difficult the vocal was going to be to capture the necessary emotion.

@cowparsleyman (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21308) Not an ELO song that I'm familiar with but can tell the Jeff Lyne influence in the chord progressions. Excellent delivery and execution

@ChrisPrice (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22723) Ah, I vaguely remember the original. Top job here. Bass weapon of choice eh ? Me too, I reckon if we ever got a forum band together there would be a big fight over who played bass

@PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) What can I say about this ? It's a bloody marvellous cover and top marks to you for taking on the challenge. It's a different take on a classic song that still retains the original expression and emotion. Quality. And BTW, I think that your vocals are perfect for this number

Blimey ! After listening to all of these fabulous cover versions, it's a bit daunting to post my entry. It's a cover of a track off the "Beatles For Sale" Album - All jangly guitars and acoustic. I've loved the song for years after listening to the album on repeat when I was a kid

@pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269),

This one brings back really happy memories for me.  I was 10 and 'round at my Grandma's where my bachelor uncles lived.  They had the best record collection on the planet and uncle Rick had a guitar or two to play.  That's what really switched me on to music.  The Beatles were a staple fr me from a very young age.  I loved 'Beatles For Sale' which of course, is where this originates from.  No Reply, Mr Moonlight and of course this little beauty which really should have been a single release.  Your vocals are stunning here John.  The cover is top quality!

Don't know why the original link wouldn't work but here is a new link which will take you to my version of 'Where do you go to'.  Original by Peter Serstadt.  It took an age to decide what to do with this.  I had to remind myself that it was a cover and so I dropped a million instruments and kept it to a simple string arrangement with a little bass and some drums cobbled together to break th edmonton of a song with only a few repeated chords..

@pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) thanks for the heads up about the link not working.

Excellent interpretation @Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) I love how you have kept it simple with the orchestral strings and nice work with the brass as well. That BBC orchestra vst really is something. Perfect vocals top it off Paul. Top quality work

Great cover of Serstadt fo'sure. I think your own stamp is put on it from the off; the original is largely guitar based and more uptempo while you've slowed it down and taken it away from the guitar. It's an impressive orchestral arrangement and I really like when the ride cymbal (?) and the bass kicks in. Adds a nice contrast to the piano and string sections. The horns in the bridge section are also well worked.

More fantastic covers...this is proving to be quite a thread!

John's Beatles cover is brilliant...vocals somehow manage to steal the show from those fab jangly guitars. I love the early Beatles in particular...I thought they went a bit bonkers smoking all that shit and going all peculiar...although they produced more great songs later on...I dunno whether it was the flares and beards and stuff that got on my nerves too...anyway...

The "Seven Nation Army" cover is absolutely immense...amazingly powerful stuff with a vocal that could strip wallpaper at 100 paces...awesome  :)

Kafla did an amazing job of Vince Clarke's Only You...I often wondered what Depeche Mode would have made of it, had he not scarpered with it and fallen for the completely resistible Ms Moyet...or if he'd had a bump on the head like Ronald Coleman in that film with Greer Garson that I can't remember the name of...or whatever the hell happened to him. This version I reckon knocks Yazoo into a cocked hat...the vocal is superb and it drips with emotion...whereas I thought Gus Poyet/Ms Moyet always sounded like she was neither fish nor fowl as my Grandma might have put it  ;)

Wicked Deeds took a fairly kitsch singalong ditty and turned it into a heart-wrenching ballad with that amazing string section. Soaring vocals in that one too! Peter Sarstedt must have been as thrilled at having a number one hit with this as he was uncomfortable at seeing that photofit of the Yorkshire Ripper  :P And when his Ma heard that they'd caught the Ripper and his name was Peter S...utcliffe...I bet she breathed a sigh of relief. You never saw them both in the same room together, did you?

Reminds me, a good friend of mine knew a guy who worked with Sutcliffe and he genuinely said "He was OK, was Pete"

Incredible, really.

These covers are incredible too. Great work on the playlist, John!

'Steppin Out' was written by Jeff Lynne in  1977 and is on the "Out of the Blue" double album, here's the original and his own acoustic cover...What a songwriter...

So, I'm late to the party and it is a long thread but as far as I can tell the challenge is open until the 31th so we go...
First and probably last cover I ever recorded, my take on Hero Of War by Raise Against, a fantastic song but I always felt it was lacking a little in dynamics and "aggression" for lack of better words.

Excellent @Jambrains (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19875).  Great interpretation of the original, given it's a guitar song and you are, well, Jambrains, I expected more guitars so the piano intro building to all the guitars really worked well.

Good stuff!

Hi all, I'm a bit Johnny come lately on this one, I only noticed it a week or so ago and have been thinking about it. I've never recorded a cover before so I was intrigued to see if I could get close. The mistake I made was to choose a ballad by one of the World's greatest songwriters, played by the best band, at the Abbey Road and produced the the great George Martin and team. Anyway I gave it a few days and here's what I managed. :o

Oh and it's called Let it be by The Beatles

Very brave @Jamie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19125) but you really do it justice. You carry the lead vocal so effortlessly. Nice choice of instruments as well, although you've followed the original you've made it your own creation as well. Top work  :)
Title: Re: Cover Version Challenge ?
Post by: PeteS on January 28, 2021, 11:08:18 PM
This was easy and really hard!  Some of the ideas came to me quickly but some of the more subtle elements (you might ask whether there are any!) took much more time.  It so much harder working with someone else's song that your own where there are no perceptions as to what it should sound like.

As for performance and production, it was tricky!  I'm busy with something else so this always took a back seat plus singing was also a problem, lockdown means everyone is home and I really prefer an empty house so I can let myself go.  So it feels a little rushed and less than perfect to me.

Anyway the song is the amazing Waterloo Sunset formerly by the Kinks but hopefully now with a huge dollop of Echo Dogs power and feeling.

I hope you like it!

Hi @PeteS (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22588) I like what you have done here, giving the song a different twist but retaining the essence of the original. It's a more rocked up version. Nice guitars and vocals and another brave choice - Fab work  :)

Hi team,

Here's my late entry for this.

I've been trying to make this cut'n'shunt of two songs for a while, so when the challenge came up I thought I'd try.

So what was I going to bring to the table? The chords are similar so I just merged them into a composite.

The backing was done on my iPhone GB and I then added guitars vocals. I wasn't entirely sure about the key but not sure I'd get the vocals much better so thought I'd let it go and move on..
Anyway hope you enjoy and look forward to your thoughts..

Hi guys,
Well, it's 2 weeks late but I finally got the nerve to post my cover challenge song. I've had an ear infection for a week or so, so that's my excuse
for the terrible mix and vocals. I seem to have lost my mojo somewhere along the line since this covid thing started  :(
I've never recorded/produced a cover before so it was a challenge, but I kinda enjoyed doing it and I haven't done anything for a long time, so thanks for the motivation. I decided to do a twisted version of David Bowies 'Space Oddity' :o I hope I didn't totally destroy this song for those who love it :o
I won't explain the twist but I have added the lyrics to the spoken bit in case you can't understand it  :o It's probably best listened to an headphones 8)
I'd really appreciate any feedback on how I might improve the mix or any other aspect of the track.  :)

This is Major Tom. Something very odd’s going on
I hear the Beatles singing their songs!
Did someone put acid in the oxygen?
What are they doing out here in space?
Get them out; get them out; get them out of my face
They had the spiritual thing with the Maharishi
This is my gig don’t they see…
I’m just a poor boy sitting in a tin can…
“Actually, Tom, you’re in our space, in the spirit world”
Really? Well this is embarrassing isn’t it?
Is that you John…George…Freddy? OMG! Am I…is this
Have I died? Is this heaven? Am I dead?

Hi, I had fun doing my Let it be cover a few weeks ago, so decided to have another go!
This time I went for another classic by Radiohead, karma police. A bit harder to decipher than let it be but a nice challenge. I had more trouble trying to get some of the sounds right, thanks to John @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) for helping to try and workout a particular sound. We both thought it was a guitar with some fancy delay, but the nearest we could get to it was a synth arpeggiator. I had fun doing it, hope you enjoy it!

Cheers

Good one Jamie, that song suits you. Slightly lighter than the original, but that suits me as I find Radiohead a bit dreary myself, acclaimed though they are. Ebbs and flows very nicely...and a cool and effective wall of sound there when needed. The dying wasp at the end was recording mastery, genius stuff  ;)
