I’ve always wanted to try an experiment -
Basically get one of our more talented producers to write a backing track with a fairly traditional structure - verse , bridge , chorus x2 , mid 8 , chorus etc , or something similar
Then we all take it away and write a top line and lyrics
Then the big reveal day where we all post our efforts and judge the top 3...
Don’t know if it would work but might be interesting 🧐🧐🧐🧐
-
I think that’s a cool idea Andy, it would be fun and quite a challenge. Hope it gathers support. ;)
-
Excellent idea Andy. The different interpretations would be very interesting. Can't be arsed with that top 3 judging mullarkey though. :)
-
I would certainly be up for it :)
-
Oh yeah....right up my street ;D ;D. I've got loads of backing tracks ;D. Whether the production is good enough....I don't know.
There's going to be others here who've probably got backing tracks they want to get a top line on as well. How we going to do this ??
I can post a selection, if you want ?? I'd love to hear how different folks interpret my music......
Great idea Kaf ;D
take care, stay safe etc etc etc
-
I like this idea. I'd love to work with other people's backing tracks. We have a few people who could come up with backing tracks. What about having 3 or 4 to choose from. I like the idea of NOT having any voting, too. I would say, just make a playlist on SoundCloud of all the "entries" so we can hear them all easily.
-
Sounds interesting... I agree with not necessarily having the voting though.

Bin...it would be an honour if you want to post a selection...let’s all fall in love 😍
Do you think we should select one so we can hear the different interpretations ? I am curious to see if it leads to similar melodies or whether it will be completely down to the individual.
And yes no need for top 3...I have no idea how things work in here 🤔🤣
-
OK Kaf, I'm just off to work ::). So I'll post a few up when I get back tonight. ;D
-
Hi, So, here's a couple of backing tracks. Well, that's what I call them ;D ;D
https://soundcloud.com/binladeda/no1/s-WKQ3r
this one has all the parts, but not necessarily in the right order ;D
https://soundcloud.com/binladeda/sometime-nevermp3x/s-ckFqn0Tm8Tj
I'm not really sure if this is the sort of thing you're looking for...I've got more
-
Both pretty brilliant Bin but for me I can hear things in the first one 😍
If everyone agrees we could go for say a 1st October deadline and try and work some magic...gives me time to get rid of this bloody cold as well 😋
-
Bin ,
Can you reveal the BPM and key of your glorious composition? ...ahem so my autotune works correctly :D ;D
-
If this work I’ll happily provide another backing for a future challenge.
We could also reverse it and write to the same set of lyrics?
Just and idea.
:-)

I've got vibes for the first one too (also, now, lyrics -suitably dour!) despite the genre. Will see about recording some vocals at the weekend.

Hi, Don't know how many are thinking about taking this on, but, according to SC's new layout, I've had 7 downloads.....
Also, I was thinking (always dangerous) that maybe more choices of backing track, might get more people involved ?
I, for one, would love to hear what @Neil C (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18856) has got, and anyone else......
As far as my backing track (how dare you) goes, I'm more than happy to send people the stems via dropbox, and they can do whatever they want with them. (9 tracks)
Can't remember what key it's in, probably C or G. I do remember that there's some 'unusual' tuning on the slide. I'll have a look, and let you know asap ;D
BPM is 95. 4/4 time.
Take care ;D
-
"How Dare You" sounding really good - I might also be up for it (now I am a country fan LOL).

Perfect Bin...it’s a brilliant track btw - I love it 😍😍😍😍
Put a long end date on comp
Will be good for me to post a track that everyone is happy with the production , EQ, panning etc 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Mission complete @Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) 😂

@Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620)
the deep end
Left my keys in the truck,
Walked down to the lake.
It took a beautiful day
to make an ugly mistake.
The sunlight flickered in the shallows
Falling gently on her skin.
Her Daddy said there'd be moments
that shouldn't ever begin.
She's a rodeo cowgirl.
drinking late at the bar.
Should have cut loose in Texas
driving safe in her car.
We were married that spring
In the bright lone star state.
left my problems behind
'til the end of the date.
Come the fall, I was drifting
Falling back on my ways.
Met a woman who told me
I'd sure be welcome to stay.
The sunlight flickered in the shallows
Falling gently on her skin.
Her Daddy said there'd be moments
that shouldn't ever begin.
She's a rodeo cowgirl.
drinking late at the bar.
Should have cut loose in Texas
driving safe in her car.
Sometimes, you're swimming in the deep.
Some girls, you're never meant to keep.
Don't go swimming in the deep end.
Some, you're never meant to keep.
Some, you're never meant to keep.

@Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620),
Steve, send a pm with your email and I'll email a sketch over to you.

@Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231)
Great Lyrics Paul. So pleased you're going to have a crack ;D. I've sent you an invite to a dropbox party, along with Kaf, and anyone else that comes along....
It's 95 BPM, 4/4, and in E min. It's just Emin, G and C, with a couple of D's thrown in for good measure. Tried to keep it simple, and melody friendly....no flash ;D ;D
Have fun old chap, looking forward to hearing it....
take care ;D
-
@Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620),
I'll mix the stems and add a decent vocal. In the meantime, I'll send my initial rough sketch over to your inbox. Look out for it buddy.

Hi @Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) please could I also get access to those stems? Many thanks
-
@adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) excellent ;D ;D. Just need your email, and I'll send you an invite when I get back from work tonight.
-
Me too Steve :)
-
;D ;D @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) ...well well well ;D ;D. really really looking forward to hearing this one John ;D. I know how you feel about country music....
on their way mate ;D.
-
@Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) A couple of great tracks there Mr.Bin. I don`t listen to much country but tomorrow I`m going to drown myself in bourbon, start a gunfight & fall in love with a horse.
-
Had a very enjoyable hour writing a top line for the @Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) country track :) :) :)
I'll ping it off to you later Steve :)
Where shall we post our interpretations ?
Cheers
John

Got most of this written now too... (thanks @Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) and @kafla (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6905) for making this happen!)
How about having a "reveal day" - we save our songs until a certain day and post them at as similar time as possible so we get to hear all of them more or less together?
End of the month was talked about - I reckon I might even be able to get mine done a little sooner.
-
I like the idea of the "reveal" day @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124)
Great idea @kafla (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6905) and great backing track @Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) :) :)
-
Morning guys,
Good idea for the reveal day. I know @Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) can't start working on his until the middle of the month. So, not sure about a deadline.......
Just had a thought :o.....a deadline for people to join, and a BIG reveal day when everyone has finished?? Within reason...of course ;D ;D
Take care ;D
-
Why don't we go for the 1st of October for the reveal date?
Gives us time to get the Halloween comp on the go...serial killer theme this year ;) :)
-
Has everyone picked the same backing track?
I might be tempted to throw my cowboy hat into the rodeo ring 😀
-
I've gone country @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) ;D It's all @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) fault ;D
-
Yeah, we're blaming Adam for all of us going down that route. :D
-
@PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) I`ve picked the country one too but I suppose we won`t know till reveal day. Go for it Paul would love to hear what you come up with.
On a wider point, is it enough to just sing beautifully :o over the original @Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) track or do we have to rerecord stuff over?
-
Morning guys,
@PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253), be great to have you on board Paul ;D. everyone has gone for the first track. If you let me have your email, I'll send you a dropbox invite for the stems.
Only 9 tracks....which is really good for me ;D. I average around 20 ::)
@5 guys named Lars (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22535). Hi 5 ;D. Absolutely. ;D add, subtract, multiply, chop, change it to anything you want. The more radical/extreme the better, as far as I'm concerned ;D ;D
And you don't have to sing beautifully. Sing ugly ;D ;D ;D Turn it into anything you want my friend.....have some fun with it ;D
-
The writing part was easy, a quick melody and a set of lyrics. The difficult part has been the chopping up of sections to suit my approach and create greater dynamics. It's proven very difficult to reassemble into a meaningful composition. I've put in a great deal of work meticulously enhancing the timing of audio notes. That's a different ball game to quantising software instruments. It's beautiful but it's hard work. :-\
Increasingly, production is like chasing after an elusive rabbit. I'm so far down the rabbit hole that I can't leave without the prize. 😕🐇😕😁
-
@Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) Its taken me 2 days to write 5 lines so I probably won`t alter it too much. ;D ..Reveal day after Christmas anyone? :D
-
Not my fault, I think this was all just meant to be... (yee-ha).
-
Good morning ;D
@PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) Stems sent Paul. Boots and stetson on the way ;D.
Hope everyone is having fun with this. I've already heard a few snippets, and am already
overwhelmed with emotion....country style ;D ;D
Take care all

@Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620)
I've spent quite a lot of time with this but have hit a brick wall. My problem lis with downloading the stems. The files are so large and my internet so bad that I'm at the stage where I am about to throw the towel in. I had a day off yesterday and worked from 9-2 trying to download the stems. They fail midway through download. Whilst they are downloading I work on the first two thirds of the song so that is really developed. Anyone suggest anything that can help here because time is too precious to waste in this manner. My internet won't improve any time soon, at least not until I move to a new house.
@Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620), I can send you my progress so far. Like me, you'll be kicking yourself that I can't steer this home.
I was going to finish this next week when my annual leave begins but I don't want to waste any more frustrating time.
Paul

@Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) , Paul you can’t do anything about a slow internet connection. But you could ask for the stems as mp3 files. You could always swap them for better quality files later, but at least you would be able to get your song constructed....just a thought, all the best.
-
@MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274)
Thanks,
I was thinking exactly the same that MP3 or 4 might be the way to go. I had a day about a week ago where I downloaded a couple of stems and I began work on them. It sounded so crystal clear then I knew that I needed the other stems to progress. Each file takes about an hour to download then I receive a message saying internet connection is lost and so I begin the process again. I love what I've done so far but I'm tearing my hair out.
@Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620), if you could try with mp4's, that might be a solution. I feel like I have a broken down Rolls Royce on the drive and I can't take her out for a spin :-(
@MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274) thank you so much for your suggestion.

Hi Paul @Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231)
You could try using a download manager like folxgo perhaps...you can generally resume interrupted downloads with that...if you are on a mac.
I hope to download my stems tonight and could convert them to mp3 and send them over to you later on? If you haven't got them by tonight just drop me a line...
-
...or you could send the wavs in zipped files.
-
@Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) Paul, if you PM me your address I'll load the stems on a USB and pop it in the post today
John
-
I don't know why but I tried again and they have downloaded without any problem this time.
The end of a big headache for me.
Thanks for your suggestions

@pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269)
That would have been wonderful. Fortunately, my problem has just resolved itself.
I don't know why this is the case as I have previously tried to download stems without anyone else taking up precious broadband resources. Can anyone suggest why I have struggled for almost a week then suddenly the files download?
Thanks
Paul
-
@Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) :) :) No problems Paul - If anybody else wants the files I've got em on a USB now :) :)
-
I needed a nod from the Gods of Broadband but I'm happy to say, my suffering is over. Nailed it!

Anyone up for helping a complete and utter n00b with cleaning up/improving his vocals a tad for this track? :D
