Title: Starting from scratch
Post by: House463 on June 07, 2020, 08:26:34 PM
Hi all.

I'd really like to start recording music both vocal and piano. Main issue I have no idea where to start! I have a laptop and unfortunately not much money. I tried reading the helpful guides above but still ended up pretty confused. Could someone please tell me where I should need, minimum requirements to start recording (on a budget)?

Any help or advice is great thank you!!!

Welcome @House463 (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22543)

We can definitely get you up and running

To make sure we recommend the most suitable gear could you give the following info

How would you want to record the piano? Eg the audio from a real piano or the sound from an electric piano/keyboard  - or record the playing on piano and then changing the sound after

Would you need to record vocals and piano at the same time?

Would you want to add more elements - drums, strings etc.

What laptop do you have - eg Windows or Mac and what are the specs

Would you want  setup you can upgrade at a later date

How much time/effort do you want to put in to learning the software, techniques etc.

And finally, what would be a reasonable budget for you?

Hi @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) thank u!

Record using the keyboard would probably be easier. But open to suggestions.

Probably easier for me to record separately.

No real big plans to add other elements, just trying to keep things basic to learn.

Windows laptop, quite a few years old.

Have a fair amount of time to learn software etc.

Maybe £200 in total. Is that unrealistic?
