Title: Holy crap! I just won half a million...
Post by: Sterix on May 13, 2020, 12:02:27 AM
... or would have if I'd have (a) been on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, (b) had the same questions this guy got who walked away from the million pound one! and (c) had the balls to answer some of the questions I wasn't 100% on. Although I'd have probably used up a lifeline or two on the first 14 questions I actually knew or guessed all those answers.

The journalist is a total idiot (it is the Daily Mail after all but I only read it cos it's free online and I like a laugh. They really don't have a clue about what "bottling" something actually means. If the guy had had an inkling about the answer but chose not to then, yes, you could have said he'd bottled it. But if you don't know the answer then walking away is sensible, not bottling it.

The questions and answers are in the article at least. Without giving the answers here this was how I'd have done.

1) Knew
2) Knew
3) Knew
4) Knew
5) Knew
6) Knew (but may have doubted myself in the hot seat)
7) Was pretty sure on the answer but, as above, may have squeezed my bum a little in front of the cameras
8) Was 99% certain
9) Knew
10) This is probably the first one I may have used a lifeline on but there was a song in my head which I thought was from this opera and it says this name several times in it
11) Again I knew but would have kecked myself and tried not to convincemyself it was C instead!
12) First one I'd have had to totally guess at... but the answer was screaming in the back of my head. I knew it from somewhere and I was right.
13) Second one I had to guess on but the answer can be worked out from the name
14) I knew this one because I came across it only last week somewhere.
15) The big one. And I have to admit that the answer was one of two I'd have dismissed from the off. Or "bottled it" as the DM would claim...

So there you go. If you want to have a crack yourself let me know how you would have done.Would you have "bottled" any of them?

You should apply to go on Martin. Might be a quicker way to riches than waiting for those lyrics royalties to come rolling in.  ;)

I was out at the Hindu festival question, so early bath for me.

Twas a Sunday night...the first time I took my wife out for a date...nearly 30 years ago...I was slightly early in arriving to pick her up, so the family asked me in to wait. As I sat down, I noticed that "Mastermind" was on the telly and the contestant's chosen specialised subject was "the crimes of Jack The Ripper" which i used to be totally obsessed by. As Magnus Magnusson asked the questions, I decided to punctuate the increasingly awkward silences by answering them...eventually getting 14 out of 15 right...the guy on TV got 13 out of 15, as I recall. I was pretty angry with myself...but, on reflection, thought it just as well to have got one question wrong...after all...I didn't want my future in-laws to think I was some kind of weirdo  :P

You sound like a weirdo to me - I mean who goes out for a first date on a Sunday night?
