Title: songwriting rituals
Post by: darreldo on December 20, 2011, 08:57:51 PM
Does anybody have any rituals normal or strange when they sit down to write? do they drink a certain drink, eat a certain food, do a routine first??
A daft question to ask but an interesting question. For some reason iv'e found myself writing songs after eating a joint of pork! it must release chemicals that get my creative juices flowing!! haha. daft but true

    Hello Darreldo
"Joint of pork" that was funny..lol..  A joint works for me also sometimes, but is enevitably followed by a ritual of looking aimlessly at my equipment for
an unspecified amount of time, until I have a beer to counteract the effect... so in short, yes lots of rituals..!!  Well, habits, same thing?

                                                                 Great post

I've been stupidly busy at work recently (i'm a chef. It's Christmas. Averaging 60+ hours a week!) and you'd think I'd sleep like someone's hit my off switch everynight.

But I've got into a (bad?) habit of writing when I'm laying in bed. It's got to the point now where if I don't mull over a few linesand put pen to paper (or finger to touch screen) then my subconcious won't LET me sleep, and I'll be tossing and turning all night.

Saying that some of my best ideas come about in this time, so its not all bad, being a enslaved to the whims of your cerebelum ;)

Also I've been DREAMING lyrics too. These I treat as extra special and practically lunge over my bed for pen and paper.

Aside from those, no. No ritual. My life is too chaotic and up on the air to facilitate this idea. I compensate by trying to be totally open to inspiration, and always have my pocket notebook to jot anything down on

It's funny to hear how different people write :) Joint of Pork is classic haha

I too like to write with a joint... :p It brings out the best idea's and allows me to experiment more. I have learned not to let myself just drift and stare into space lol

I do all writing at night between about 11ish and about 3-4 a.m. I need the house to be quiet and no interruptions.

One thing I have discovered is that sometimes my other half needs to use my computer to create lesson plans for her classes, and when

I can't plug in and get to the computer, I am forced to sit on a chair (Waiting for her to get off it) and just mess about without being plugged in... And

this is also often a time when I come up with some nice things on the guitar because I am not distracted by the tech side and trying to find the right sound.
