Title: Uncle Edward
Post by: pompeyjazz on February 16, 2020, 08:35:57 PM
Hi All,

Every time I use my DAW I seem to discover some fab new feature of it. This time (for Reaper users) I found a great little chord generator utility called Ghordgun which is included in the Reapack package. Anyway, enough technical babble. I wheeled the orchestra out during the latest storms and set to work on this little number. Always love trying something a bit different so hope that I've achieved that  :)

p.s - I know his name wasn't really Edward  ;D

Uncle Edward went to bed and on the way he banged his head
Said he wished that all his dreams came true
Thinking of his abdication
Moment that had shocked the nation
Everything he did he did for you

Thought that he could have some fun
Swinging with and Austrian
Tyrol fiddle playing in the sun
Packed him off without a trace
Britain's national disgrace
Stripped of power what was he to do ?

Socialising having fun
Meeting an American
Whisky Gin and tonic Rum and coke
Signed up to the master plan
Charming, charming little man
Puppet in a puppet state one day

Couldn't keep up the disguise
Swallowed far too many lies
Did your dream come true ?

Yeah, very Beatle-esque mate, is there no end to your prolificness!! :) 8) another good idea for a song, where do they come from? ;D

my only crit would be to reduce the delay on the vocal (via side chaining) during the singing because the delay muddy's the delivery, beter to reduce it slightly then release it when the singing stops...just a thought John, it would improve clarity and thus improve the listening experiance... :)
best, Kevin :)

Fab chord changes!  Vox sounds great ( I do agree on the delay as well)
Very creative track John ... amazing how you can knock these out 😊

Beatles meet ELO, meet dare I say it Prefab Sprout and of course, our very own pompeyjazz!

Those hold piano chords are delicious, coupled with the delightful strings. I really bought into this one.

it's really good.

Can see what people are saying about the Beatles sound - very White album.

It's nice to have lyrics like that too as they really tell a story and and not generic.

Hi John, I'd add in Divine Comedy to the bands listed above, a slightly eccentric English tale with a bit of orchestral embellishment. Some very different sounds in there for you and yeah, it's definitely worth experimenting and of course lots more fun. I liked the layered vocals very much, helping nicely that memorable melody - actually one that is unusual too as it's kind of a verse/chorus blended into one, but because of the narrative works well. Didn't Squeeze used to do that kind of structure all those years ago? Nice one mate.

Brilliant stuff, John...love the crazy chord change...got me every time 😃

Lyrics are a hoot...but also tell a fascinating story.

Genius.

I, too, really enjoyed the chord progression. And I'm intrigued by the plugin you found. What version of Reaper are you using? I haven't updated for a while.

Hi Vicki. I'm on version 6 of Reaper but the utility should work on earlier versions. Download the Reapack utilities and run the utility called Chordgun. There are videos on line showing you how to do this  :)

@pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) - Very nice John, as all the others have said very Beatley, maybe put more slap delay, (don't you have Waves Abbey Road Chambers?) on the piano, take a listen to Come on to me, on the Macca's Egypt Station album, that kind of piano, and HUGE ringo-esque drums.

Maybe bring up the string plucks, plonk em at 10 and 2 oclock, keep the piano at 9 and 3 o clock with the LVox centre and the delay Vox routed to just off centre.

Juts an idea...

A really great arrangement, as all your stuff is John, love your chord progressions.

Nice indeed - very retro in line with the topic (or are we still reliving it?).
Love the fun ... with an Austri-un rhyme!
A couple of times I felt the two vocals didn't 100% line up which is something I'd definitively try to fix.
But great atmosphere and that Ghourdgun seems to have been a great addition.

George Martin eat your heart out!

Amazing stuff. I love the composition and the usage of the strings.
Absolutely beautiful work, mate. Blown away.

Really great heart warming stuff.  One of those tracks that is both whimsical and a tiny bit melancholy. Actually found myself feeling a little bit sorry for the geezer, from the lyrics.  Super chord changes and piano vibe, as has been said. (Were you tempted to rename it Uncle Harry by the way?  Most of the lyrics would still work.)

Hi PJ,

Echo the others on the Beatles- and why not when it produces such good songs.
The orchestral touches are really good. Love that relentless piano sound.

Just a great little tune.

Hey John
I never thought fun would rhyme with American but damn - it does!
Beatles would have been proud of a song like this.
Good work

John,
Loved it from start to end.
Great chord progression, the dominant piano and your lennonesque vocal delivery.
And the lyrics.
Just top notch.

Indeed, I too get some Beatles vibe from this, can't put my finger on it, probably the "sound", that piano and the strings? Orchestral parts works well except for the ending that gave it away a bit. To me this is kind of the essence of your work, the writing, the vocals, all distinctively you. Me like, bravo!

Hi !
I like this orchestral side mixed with a more pop rock interpretation à la Bowie. It works well. I love the dubbing of the backing vocals and your voice always has that something real. You have to keep exploring your DAW, it's working out pretty well for you  ;)

This is terrific. Great song subject gets the Beatles treatment. The string arrangement is superbly done - must have taken ages - it's even got a little bit of the Penny Lane trumpet!
Can't find anything to fault but so much to like.
