Been very, very busy the last few weeks. I'm getting a site together to house all my song lyrics (so far I've got about 100 posted, about another 550 ready to be posted, and I'm currently writing new material at just under 1 a day so far this year. What can I say, I've hit a rich vein of inspiration at the moment). So that's been taking up most of my free time.
I thought I'd pop in and drop my latest lyric just so you know I'm still alive and kicking. :P
THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY
VERSE
Every time I close my eyes it's your face that I see
I'm reminded by the choice I made so foolishly
I was wrong to let you go, to let you slip away
Now I'm drowning in regret. It's the price that I must pay
CHORUS
When you're lonely
And if only
Is the bed that you have made
When you reach out for a shadow
That is cast upon your grave
VERSE
Nothing ventured, nothing gained or it's nothing but remorse
Much too young to understand so I got on my high horse
Looking back I can't believe I could hurt you like I did
I let doubt control my fears and thought that you'd submit
CHORUS
When you're lonely
And if only
Is the bed that you have made
When you reach out for a shadow
That is cast upon your grave
When the one you
Should have clung to
Is the one that got away
You condemn all your tomorrows
To a maelstrom of pain
INSTRUMENTAL
VERSE
All I have are nightmares left to keep me in the night
In the end it's just what I deserve. It serves me right
CHORUS
When you're lonely
And if only
Is the bed that you have made
When you reach out for a shadow
That is cast upon your grave
When the one you
Should have clung to
Is the one that got away
You condemn all your tomorrows
To a maelstrom of pain
CHORUS
When the memory
Will not let me
Get away from my mistakes
Cupid take your poisoned arrow
And remove me from these chains
Please forgive me
Please have pity
Please don’t leave me to this fate
Staring hard upon the gallows
That is love’s final refrain
CHORUS
I am lonely
And if only
I could learn just how to change
I would dream of you and somehow
You’d no longer be the one that got away…

Sterix,
Nice work here. Rhyming schemes all work, and it’s easy to hear it being put to music.
The strongest part is the final chorus where you get to the title/pay-off line. I’d be inclined to use it more.
Have fun with collecting your lyrics, mine are scatter on a laptop and various bits of A4..
:-)
