I'm about to buy a new computer and move onto W10, would like to build one, anyone ever done this? got any advice>

Hi kev,
If you have the confidence to build one, then you’re expert enough, for what it’s worth i would say W10 is a stable choice, just avoid overclocking, don’t put any software on that isn’t music related, disable as many non essential services, go for win defender AV...keep away from AVG and all those other tsr’s ...I don’t have an internet connection on mine, i don’t need it...as you probably know max out the ram, superfast ssd and read up about all the usual performance related stuff in the environment etc....you’ll know all this anyway...
A cracking GPU won’t help much, avoid 32 bit plugins...

One more thing...in the long run I’ve always found it pays to buy a new pc with the top level warranty...everything works..the internet is a lonely place when trying to solve a driver/3rd party processor/bios/audio interface issue that caused by some dodgy plugin code...

@redrhodie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21171) - it’s not a stupid question...i copy the files to a usb stick, and do any transfers from the laptop downstairs... i don’t want to be distracted by the web when im working, i also prefer google drive as it’s free.
The wifi doesn’t reach the music room, so i go downstairs occasionally to update the AV and check for windows updates.
I just want to be away from it all when I’m making music 😎
I also like the light weight feel of no massive browsing history, nothing but music on it, no cookies, no phishing, bots etc etc. All backed up to an external drive....
I can recommend it.

Good advice from CPM..I use the same system for uploading songs..never do it from my music puter because it's never on the net..same for downloading updates for Cubase..I do it on my laptop then transfer it to my music puter via a stick..
jury is still out on the buy or build ...it's possible to get a better puter cheaper by self building, but where do i go if it goes wrong?
Ill probably chicken out and buy one again..what pussy!!! ::)

I would definitely advocate buying one built by a pro
There are so many potential conflicts between hardware and software (especially if you want low audio latency)
I would recommend these guys: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/
You can talk to them about configuring the pc to your exact specs and get advice etc.
For me this is the best compromise between building one yourself or buying one off the shelf (which is usually full of “bloat ware” - software you don’t need that will just hog resources unnecessarily)
I got my laptop from them in 2012 and it is still going strong

My own laptop was built by these guys. Had it 4 or 5 years now and it's still going strong. Best PC I've ever had, nicely upgradeable, and hasn't let me down.

Get them to load all your VST's if you can too, saves you time and some can be tricky to get all playing nicely.

I develop software for a living so know all about the bloatware Paul mentioned.
With my latest W10 laptop I removed everything I possibly could that is not music-related.
And I'll often go into "Task Manager" and kill processes - just because!
The worst offenders are Cortana and McAfee.
Both of these programs will hog CPU cycles right in the middle of recording in your DAW resulting in a nasty gap or blurp of noise on the track. I found a registry hack to shut down Cortana and I live with McAfee.
Not connecting to the internet is a good move if you are going to disable virus protection.
