Title: "Jill Bruce Springsteen and me" by Paul A and The Reflections
Post by: Wicked Deeds on August 26, 2019, 07:17:21 PM
I'm about to get ready for a night shift but wanted to share this on the forum.  I'll wade in with reviews throughout the week.  In the meantime.........

A song by Paul A and The Reflections:

Paul Adamson - vocals
John Bradley - backing vocals and key swells.
Paul Tarle - piano
Nooms Mussell - backing vocals
NeilConnor - harmonica
Davy Vance - electric lead guitar
Paul Vasey - acoustic rhythm and fingerpicking, bass guitar, string arrangement and drum programming.

A big thank you to the guys from the forum who played on this song.  It was a wonderful experience to have you all on board.  I think we nailed it fellas!

The setting for the story is by The River Wear in the city of Durham, England.

The unmistakeable voice of Bruce Springsteen was heard  on the radio only a few days prior to the night when the river raced like a runaway train.  Jill thought that perhaps the words and melody to "Thunder Road" signalled that something quite special was about to happen.

The credits rolled bringing the movie "Blinded by the Night" to an end. Outside, the heaven's opened up and the rain came pouring down but the thunder couldn't be heard as the river surged and two people made their way to their cars then said Goodbye.

Sometimes, people fall with their eyes wide open. At other times, it only happens when we're  sleeping.

If you haven't heard the new Springsteen album "Western Stars" then I highly recommend it.  The Boss is in great form but he couldn't work his magic on that late summer night.  Still,  "It was Jill, Bruce Springsteen and me."

Jill, Bruce Springsteen and me

Jill looked for a sign
'twas on  the radio;
a sign that love might be.
It was Jill, Bruce Springsteen and me.

Storm clouds filled the sky,
The river surged below.
I held her in my arms
'til we  kissed and then we let go.

Perhaps I'll catch her
in a sleepless moment.
Though it's far more likely In a dream!

I came in search of love.
Her calmness soothed the pain.
The thunder wasn't heard
so we  began again.

I may reflect upon
my journey to today.
A girl with storm cloud eyes
Caught my gaze then walked away.

Perhaps I'll catch her
In a sleepless moment.
Though it's far more likely In a dream!

Jill looked for a sign
'twas on the radio;
a sign that love might be.
It was Jill, Bruce Springsteen and me

Fantastic! What a collaboration between all of you. The emotions are captured perfectly through the song, and the music is perfect, and Paul's voice fits the song quite well. With the harmonica, I could feel some of "The Boss" in this song as well :) Just perfect! Well done, guys! :)

I love this song Paul. It's so moving, damn... Not much to say really except it's great to hear everyone from the forum coming together to make this recording happen.

Sorry if this isn't really a review - I'm a bit lost for words for being lost in the song. A sublime piece of writing Paul, one of your best for sure.

Yo @Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231)

I knew from the first track you sent, that this would be a damn fine song, plus I knew your involvement Paul, would ensure a classy result.
This is one of those tracks much greater than the sum of it's parts,it just...works.

Thanks again for the invite Paul and for making it all such a cohesive piece.

ps...

Nooms Mussel, now that's a rock star handle fo sho!  8)

Already commented on the lyrics, and the song doesn't disappoint - moody and cinematic, taking us to that stormy night... A huge production, really full sound and atmosphere.

My ear was expecting the note to rise rather than fall on the ment of moment but that may be too obvious and not in line with the mood you created.

The dream team - strangely like coming home, to hear all those familiar contributors doing what they do best... What next? Boydie on claves...?

Tremendous monster of a song this with all that delicately layered instrumentation. Shame you are not a real band as the sound is really something.

Great bit of songwriting, mesmeric mood created and so many surprises with little touches here and there from the contributing instruments.

Very well sung too, inc backing vox, and a hook you can't forget!

Hi Paul @Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) - Really cool song, love the two vocalist's working together, and the keys...

Can't add anything that the other members have said, except maybe @redrhodie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21171) and @crystalsuzy (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18947) on BVox  ooh's, just to give a nod to the 'Jill' in the title.

I do like @Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061) 's fills, he is a master of this sort of stuff.

Give my regards to Durham...

Wow, a veritable forum supergroup... bit like Bandaid... I can picture you all in the video.
Great song.  I really like the slightly woozy, fluid feel to the instrumentation, and the harmonica licks.  Nothing is overdone and demands centre stage, everything has its place and takes its turn.  Pure class.

Yeah, one day I'll be a Supper Star, I'll have a big house where all my friends and hangers on can come over and have a cheese on toast party in to the early hours, have to keep an eye on the door for people secretly hiding their stashes of crumpets... then of course someone will have too much and drive their pushbike into the swimming pool....

So many wonderful replies and compliments. @Younger Hills (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22101) thank you my friend.

@tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1) thank you. I think a song can be so much more than the event that inspired it. All of our hardships, our dissapountnents and emotions that preceded the event are very much wrapped up in a song of this nature. Thank you.

@paulski, thank you my fellow 'Reflection.'

@Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061) you have been the model collaborator. I knew this was in safe, safe hands with you. Thank you.

@nooms (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=11264) - my long-term collaborating partner, as always you delivered a beautiful vocal! Thank you.

@adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) You really seem to get what I am trying to do: the sincerity and depth of feeling in the lyrics and the emotion that I try to convey in the lyrics.

@MonnoDB (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19820) thank you for your kind words.

@MichaelA (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21274)  I'm so pleased that you have noticed how much attention has been lavished upon this production. Thank you.

@cowparsleyman (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21308) I will say hi to Durham tomorrow and maybe watch the beautiful River Wear twist, tumble and race once again.

@Modestmouse1965/ (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=22459) thank you my friend and please, don't miss out on the new Springsteen album. One of my favourite albums for many, many years.

@PaulyX (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21034) thank you so much. I am so pleased that you enjoyed this song.

@crystalsuzy (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18947) you are too kind. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed listening.

@PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253), @nooms (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=11264) @Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061) @Paulski (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19241) @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) @Neil C (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18856) @Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061)

I wonder if all of you gentleman would like me to write further material and continue this project. Answers on a postcard to Wicked Deeds.

Thank you all so much!

Paul

It's a real nice song Paul.

When I first saw you inviting PaulAds to sing this I was intrigued and I think you made a great choice there. He does it in some style...his voice and delivery suit the song so well.
The song title is also eye-catching....not immediately obvious but if you were running down a list of songs you'd stop at this one and wonder.

Fantastic arrangement and playing by all concerned and lovely harmonies by Noomsy and interjections by PJ.

Nice intro outro sandwich with the piano part though I'm not a massive fan of water or wind sound effects but that's my problem.

It's a great track. There's a little pop at 2.59.

Whoa, a forum supergroup.

Fantastic how this has all come together. Hats off to you all.

Sounds great.

All of the elements just work.
Love the mournful harmonica.

So tasteful.

That's enough praise - need to feed my face.  :D

Quality.

 Wow guys....missed this one ;D .  Lovely arrangement/prod etc.  Great ears Paul ;D ;D
Everything works so well together, and Pauls' vocal carries the mood perfectly.  Inspired ;D
It did take me a few secs to connect....but once there, I was with you all ;D ;D

Mr. Skub makes that guitar cry like a baby, and the combination with the harmonica is made in
heaven ;D .  I know I've told you before Paul....but, I just love the way you handle the strings in
your work.  Have you ever done any classical stuff ?  Love to hear it ;D

 Outstanding work guys.....blown away and stunned ;D ;D ;D

I'm glad you bumped this, @Binladeda (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18620) ! I missed it until now, and it absolutely awesome! Wonderful! Gorgeous! Etc. I'd like to post it on my music page on Facebook. I haven't posted anyone for a while and this one deserves as much exposure as possible. If that's okay with you guys? @Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) ... you can speak for everyone, right??

It's so amazing you guys can put something together like this without doing it in person. It sounds like a lot of work.

Bin and Call, thank for keeping this song alive.  It was written in approximately 20 - 30 minutes and didn't go through any rewrites.  As the writer, I'm happy for this song to be reposted and I'm fairly confident the other guys won't mind either.

Thanks

Wicked
