I’m sure it’s been done before but what about themed competitions ska, punk , reggae, new romantic , etc etc

How about reference track vs your own track?
So you name your reference and what you're trying to take from it - and you're judged upon how your own songs measures up to that.
So not looking for a song rip off - just certain parts that we take to create our own songs.

e.g. I might go for Black Hole Sun because I love the soundscape and production and overall mood - so would try to write a song in that vein.

Would also give us all an insight into what influences each other.

Good idea - all my stuff is influenced by oasis and the Beatles x

I've had my mind on a New Year's song competition for a while - there are a few New Year's Day songs (U2, Taylor Swift...) but NO good New Year's Eve songs.

That's the thing about New Year - it's complicated - everyone has their private thoughts about last year and next, while putting on a show of optimism...
