My new album is close to finished and one of the songs on it is a cover. I have absolutely no idea how to go about this. I suppose my main questions are:
1) Do I need to get permission before releasing a cover of a song, and if so, who from?
2) Can I sell this song? And if I sell it do I have to make sure the proper rights are being afforded to the original writers, or is this something that is covered by a license, or on the Bandcamp/Soundcloud/iTunes/Spotify end of things?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As this is a cover you will hold no rights to publishing royalties from the release unless you can secure some kind of agreement with the original writers. This is normally done through whomever holds the publishing rights. Personally I would look for legal advice on this before proceeding.
