Title: In Love With Misery

I've put my guitars away for this electronic track. I think the vocal style suits me better, so I may be doing more along these lines.

It wasn't easy living out here on my own
Wasn't easy living with your heart of stone
It wasn't easy talking to you on the phone
I didn't like it coz I'd rather be unknown

I went along because I wasn't sure
I should have been more careful
Didn't realise I'm pure
I always knew there'd be a price to pay
And you tortured me
By twisting all the words I didn't say
I'm in love with misery

I couldn't blame you when you took the chance to go
My lust for pain replaced you as star of the show
Your brief appearance nothing more than cameo
Back to the loathsome life I've come to love and know

I went along because I wasn't sure
I should have been more careful
Didn't realise I'm pure
I always knew there'd be a price to pay
And you tortured me
By twisting all the words I didn't say
I'm in love with misery

This is GREAT! A bit of DM to it - it’s so catchy it’s mad. I love your slightly quirky phrasing and the M8 ‘I’m in love....’ part. The ‘tortured me by twisting all the words I didn’t say’ would sell this song all on its own. Brilliant! Third listen and it’ll be defo stuck in my head for the evening! Huge thumbs up!

It didn't take long for DM to be mentioned then :) Yes, it's a bit Violator. Thanks for the everso kind comments.

Hi Bankie,

Definitely has that early 80s New Romantic feel.... I won't say the DM word.

Whoever its inspired , still a cool track.

Love the electronic piano, haunting!

A great listen.

Listened to this earlier on SC. Quite a bit different from your other stuff which I've been listening to over the past few months. It is DM influenced but I'm a real sucker for that. Great catchy early 80s vibe with excellent production. I hope that you post some more of your tunes on here as you have some excellent stuff going down.

Yo Bankie.

Despite being a dyed in the wool guitar head,I loved the 80s keyboard era, such memorable tracks and artists.

Your song is a fine number and while obviously styled from the above era, stands alone as a quality track in itself.

Hooky and catchy, super work man. M8 is inspired and one of the many great ear worms.  :)

Catchy as a catfish hook  ;D
Solid pop track - like the synth sounds and the vocals esp.
I'm in love with misery - great hook for masochists  :D
Great ending.
Enjoyed the listen

First one of yours I’ve heard I think - really liked it.
I got more of a Human League / Heaven 17 vibe than DM but that’s equally cool in my book!
That main riff/hook is irresistable. Great choice of synth patch for it too. I like that kind of ultra-short decay synth sound... and you couple it with some nice scrunchy synth bass.  Sweet.
Middle 8 great too as is the abrupt ending.
Very nice work and a time machine back to the early/mid 80s (just before the 80s went a bit naff).

Hi Bankie,

Others have mentioned DM - I hear a bit of Gahan's vocal style, but overall I thinks it's just a great mix of various 80s synth pop/rock - which I like.
I would say earlier than Violator for the DM influence - I'd probably go pre Music For The Masses even. I still think Some Great Reward is one of their best albums - packed with great tunes that hardly ever get an airing - Stories of Old (Awesome) - yet never heard them play it at a gig.
Sorry - I'm rambling - just a massive DM fan.  :D

I think it's really good and fresh sounding, even with the retro vibe.
Really catchy and instant.

The production on the vocal is brill.

Look forward to hearing more.

Hi, thanks all for taking the time to listen and comment. I wasn't actually aiming for any kind of 80s vibe and all base sounds originate from modern patches or samples, but I guess things just end up how they end up.

Paulyx, the main lead sound is actually 4 different samples played at once, 2 of which are plucked instruments, and 2 are synthy.

I'm glad to hear positive comments about the production - it's the main area I'm trying to improve and I'm currently doing a sound production course on Saturdays in order to do that.

Love this…really my cup of tea. Top synth line is great and the chord structures stay interesting to the end. Good arrangement and clean mix.

My only constructive criticism would be that although I love the retro instrumentation and mix, I think the vocal could benefit from a more modern, intimate, “upfront” treatment.

But other than that….fab…really enjoyed it.

Lovely crisp 80s style synth arrangement, lovely synth line introducing a really enjoyable tune. I hear the DM but it kind of reminds me of some recent Belle and Sebastian tracks too where they have played with synths.
Double tracks vocals are really nicely done too!

Not sure if the middle eight and re-entry work at first listen, middle 8 seems from another song a bit and then it seem unwieldy getting back in again. Could be the effect you were going for but mentioning it because took me out of the song a bit.

Overall is a super well realised bit of synth pop. Be proud! :)

Well this track took me back.

At school, depeche and OMD, pet shop boys etc were big.

This sounds great, I still listen to this kinda 80s vibe,

The song sounds really nice and was a very easy listen. mix was cool. I dont like to over analyse stuff too much but try and get a feel of the whole sound. This track played very well with my ears.
Great vocal and you have nailed the vocal style and sound too.

Great track, top work
Andy

@Bankie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=21332) - I've already commented on this one, but it really is a very very well written, played and produced piece, so difficult to do properly, so hats off to you man.

Just wanted to tell you, somethings can't be hidden. What other genres are you jumping around with?

Hmm, an unexpected thread resurrection :)

I have a heavy rock song in an advanced state, but may need to find/pay someone to sing it as my voice isn't well suited. I'm also planning a folk song with chunky acoustic guitar, some electronic elements and a guest violin appearance from a talented girl I met on a sound production course. I've also been experimenting with a progressive style to try to make something a bit more unique and dramatic, but whether I can pull that off is another story. Lots of ideas at the moment and something will stick and get completed sooner or later. Thanks for asking.
