Title: HAMMERSMITH BRIDGE nooms & paul vasey
Post by: nooms on December 31, 2018, 04:54:19 PM
wotcha folks
this is a song by paul vasey and myself called hammersmith bridge.
my partner was recovering from an operation, it was her birthday and our first tentative excursion after the 'little bit of trouble..'   id got hold of tickets to see tame impala at hammersmith apollo .. they were good but excruciatingly loud and we left early deciding on the nearby tavern below the bridge.
it was a balmy summer night and the river was glistening and enchanting, the beautiful old iron bridge framing the scene. we stood taking in the atmosphere as the sun went down..
a young woman dressed in 1940s style with a rose in her hair seemed to appear from nowhere and walked slowly thro the crowd which seemed to open and part for her, like a beaming smiley ghost .. it was some welcome magic and stayed with us ever since.

pauls musical backdrop for this is truly exquisite and stands up on its own ..
and im so grateful to him for allowing me a beautiful canvas to sing with and express my feelings over that magical evening by hammersmith bridge...
anyways ..we hope you enjoy it..

HAMMERSMITH BRIDGE
lovers poets runners and footpads
all of those songs are on the river
it'll be regaled with stars, within the hour
it'll be like englands candlelight
all is safe and sound
see a woman from the blitz with a red rose in her hair
and a smile like war is over
outside in the balmy summer night
as seen by you and me
leaning on the rail
beneath the iron shoulders of hammersmith bridge

AND..

Yeah...very cool.

A lot of real talent on display here. Lovely...carefully crafted and evocative. A treat for our worn-out lugs.

This is very delicately done, like a drifting poem set to on a soundtrack. You've created a ghostly, other worldly feel to it and the execution is very atmospheric.

Very different and 'evocative', as mentioned above is a great description.

Top work indeed!

Lovely scene set here boys....drips with atmosphere, or should that be oozes....no not quite right. Always enjoying the low key nooms delivery.

I went to that pub once....or, at least, one quite like it.

This is lovely storytelling @nooms (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=11264) - I like that you've kept it as a short snapshot of a moment.. Atmospheric as others have said, the track is beautifully played, sung and produced. Gorgeous!

It's a real BEAUTY  ;D .  As is the rest of the album.  I've heard them a few times before on Pauls site, so it
was nice to be reminded of some of them.  My own bowl is a classic  ;D ;D .  I love the atmosphere/mood you
guys create with your work.  One of world weary wisdom.  Songs for people who think and care.......Oh dear,
does that mean you won't sell many ::)

Nothing to fault or criticise.  I just love it, a joy to listen to...

 HAPPY NEW YEAR  ;D ;D

Yo nooms and Paul.

Mmm.  :)

I could leave it at that and for me anyway,it would suffice.  :)

The music is gorgeous, lulling and inspirational, plus crystal clear recording which retains warmth and shuns sterility.

The vocals are trademark hypnotic nooms, those lyrics are multi layered brilliance, they make most song lyrics (mine included) look like clumsy schoolboy offerings. Deep stuff. Love the story link in,nooms. You have the soul of a poet.

Nooms, you always create a wonderful and ghostly atmosphere with your voice. Top production on top music becomes a top song. Congrats to both of you.

Lovely work you two.
Unencumbered by the verses and choruses and bridges (well there is a bridge  ;D) the rest of us wrestle with.
"Iron shoulders" indeed.
Put me right there.
Music is enchanting as well.
Green with envy my friends, green with envy.

You set the scene really well and the song matches the quality of your description.

A great listen, did not think that the song would finish so quick.... Could have done with another verse.

Like the guitars and strings a lot.

Love the singing.

A great collab guys... Well done

Thanks for the very considerate reviews. This song has quite a history. It's personal to both nooms and I.  I guess the album was largely written in the blink of an eye and was really completed years later with one or two additions.  When I embarked upon writing the music, I deliberately shunned tried and tested song structures. It's testament to nooms' skill as a writer than he was able to turn these brief musical vignettes into songs. My wayward writing of music is mostly evident in 'this road goes on forever' from our album 'The Big Slide'.'

I fired this one across to nooms 5 years ago. He's done a brilliant job but then, his writing is very unique. I also wrote a version of the song called "The Angels Cried."  I wanted to share it so many times because I'm so proud of it and it is so poignant to what happened in my life at that time but it is now belongs to 'The Big Slide' album.

If anyone is interested in listening to the album in it's entirety, please follow the link in the original post.

Thanks again

Wicked

Lots to like here, with subtle layers that reveal themselves on repeating listening.
Just love these enigmatic short stories, set to Paul's subtle soundscape.
Excellent work as ever guys

Lovely stuff - I think there is a lot of London in here - traditional but original, exhausting but occasionally peaceful, slightly faded, but unique and full of stories.

Those pubs always seemed to rammed with rowing hoorays if I go there... shame about the not so tame Impalas, or in the end maybe not.

Hi Guys,

This is a lovely thing indeed. The orchestral setting is gorgeous and the way it drifts along serenely is a beautiful evocation of the river beneath. I thought the vocal delivery was inspired - it was a little like Tom Waits after he's gargled a gallon of honey! So much to love here in the intricate and delicate arrangement - a truly exceptional piece of music but waaaay too short.

WOW! that's was such a beautifully executed 1:55 mins. I felt like I was floating on the river in a cloud of delightful images swirling
through my head :) Very trippy and quite mesmerizing, especially the vocals :-* Beautiful lyrics and backing track.
I loved every, almost 2, minutes of this track :)

How could I not listen after the story that unfolded in your introduction, that was lyrically exquisite in it's own right.

The collaboration that followed was equally as evocative and captivating.

Great stuff guys.
