Title: Songwriting melody tips
Post by: Neil C on June 24, 2018, 09:56:59 AM
On a recent songwriting retreat one section was about writing melodies. I have always felt explaining this has been a bit theoretical and not accessible. This video is a bit of an eye opener so though it would be helpful to share. In essence he simply shows 4 things to help melody creation:

Thank you for sharing, and so timely. Writing melodies is a new focus for me, and two books just arrived to help on that adventure.

I can see and hear and movement on what he's talking about, reminds me of years back when musicians had their way of talking and lyric writers had their way of talking

In a recent podcast on songwriting it was mentioned that writing music slightly behind the beat works well for ballads or sad songs while writing music slightly ahead of the beat works well to move the song forward. Something new that I'd not yet heard, and they talked about playing in the pocket, a new term for me.
