Title: May SOTM Voting Now Open
Post by: Sterix on June 09, 2018, 10:42:58 PM
It's a hard choice, narrowing so many songs down to only a handful. Especially when you think you could have widened the genres to appeal to more people. I *did* consider that when choosing but decided ultimately that it was *me* making the decision so it has to be *my* tastes which dictate the finalists. There were songs last month that would have been shoe-ins for me but didn't make the cut. I'm sure whoever chooses next month would have chosen (some) different songs if they have had the deciding vote this month. So I make no apologies for who I choose. You (some of you at least) wanted me to decide. I've made my decision...

I'm doing this in my own imitible style so I'm going to go through some of the thought process behind it. So I'm going to give a nod to my top 10 (just happened to be that number - a coincidence) before revealing the top 6 you cam vote for.

I listened to all (I think - I may have missed one or two although I tried to be thourough) May's songs. Some songs grabbed me from the start and I knew they were certainties for the short list, if not the poll itself.

Songs that made my top ten but just missed out on the final cut...

Hang On Shep @Paulski (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19241)
the psychotic drowns in the same waters in which the mystic swims with delight @Tommy Blixt (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20176) ft Axel M)
Ruth's Blues @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124)  and @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269)
Seeing Blind @Cawproductions (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20938)

Which leaves us with the ones that did make the cut. Congratulation folks! May the highest bribe best song win!

You've got 2 weeks to vote folks. I'm being nice to you - I'm giving you three votes each.

Don't forget that if you're one of the nominated acts you need to vote (for somebody else!) for your own nomination to be valid. If you don't vote yourselves then any votes for you will be invalidated and you won't win. Collabs mean BOTH of you have to vote.

And how do you know I'll know if you haven't voted (or voted for yourselves)? Well let me tell you this. I have a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you cheat I will find you and I will kill you.  ;D

Get voting!

[edit] I'm thinking I should have just gone with my top ten in its entirety... oh well too late now.

[edit 2] Since tfz (Mike67) seems to have left us (or at least deleted their account) they're now out of this poll. I've edited the poll to remover them - if you voted for them, I think you can alter your vote.

I voted! My favorite song from May was on the list, so it was easy. Thanks for hosting, Sterix. I like your system.

I've voted! I missed some of these in all the Drum Challenge frenzy so this is a great showcase for them and a great month (no wonder so hard to choose - and thanks for having me and @Pompeyjazz at least in the top 10!)

I actually enjoyed doing it. I may volunteer again some day...

I haven't voted myself yet. I'm still undecided. They're all great tunes. I'll just have to keep playing them until I can make up my mind or time forces a gun against my head...

I have no bandwidth available to spend time giving feedback, and it's so frustrating, trying to do it on the phone. But I can listen on the phone, so I do!

I have voted. I didn't put the titles in a hat and pull out three, but I would have done just as well if I had. I hate choosing....

Please note that since one of the songwriters has deleted their account the poll has been modified to no longer include them (The Last to Know). A pity as it was doing well in the voting...

Can I vote, or is it only for entrants who have posted songs?
I can't find any guidelines..........

Voting has been an interesting experience for me.
In an effort to be objective, these are the criteria I followed in this order:

1. I ignored vocal ability and production and focused on the songwriting.
2. Overall listening experience
3. Vocal melody
4. Lyric idea and craft
5. Song structure
6. Arrangement

Personal taste obviously affects decisions, but I tried to focus on the craft.

Good work everyone.

Yeah, neither could I when I volunteered to sort out this month's madness!

As long as you have the forum permissions to vote, then vote. As said, the more the merrier. (and the bigger the winner's ego probably!)
