Hello
What better way to cast off those winter blues and leap enthusiastically into springtime than to write a new song using the drum track from the clash's "complete control" ?
The original drum track is here
https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ah2h_joGZ8_NqCWNc9l6T6To5Z48
It comes in around 169 bpm :o
The song can be in any style and genre...or even an instrumental...anything you like.
Guidelines:
All entries to be posted in the “finished songs” section of the forum and marked “drum challenge” with all entries to be posted, if possible, during the last week of May and the closing date to be midnight on Thursday May 31st.
In true punk fashion, the drum challenge is open to any forum member...and to make it extra special...the Moderators @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) @tone (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=1) @nooms (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=11264) @Ramshackles (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6887) are all invited for this one too.
We'd all LOVE to hear as many as possible have a go at this...so please join in the fun.
Hosted by @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) with John @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) assisting.
Solo efforts and Collaborations welcome!
The original ideas thread is here http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=15226.0 which may help answer any questions.
Who is up for the challenge?
-
I'm having a go in a collaboration with the lovely Vicki @CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928)
-
Cheers Paul!! I will be throwing my hat in the ring on this one...
Just been working on it now...it amazes me (not in a big headed way of course) that we write all parts to a song (except for drums in this case). I've almost got my rhythm guitar parts sorted....now just the bass, vocal melody, lyrics and lead guitar parts to go! May 31st here I come!
-
Nice one Paul.
Already rolling with this so will hopefully be done before the deadline. Having fun with it!
Good luck with the collab.
-
Are we there yet? :P
;D
-
I'm nearly done.
-
Thanks guys, great to know the bpm. Haven't done that energetic for about 40 year. Not sure I can play that fast...we'll see.
:)
neil
-
Just about finished my entry. Playing at 169 bpm is great rhythm guitar practice for sure
-
And apart from being bleeding fast the structure isn't quite regular.. :-)
-
Oh yes ! Just part of the challenge ;D
-
Ha ha! Aye...get yer skates on Neil!
Had half an hour with ye olde 6120 this afternoon...and managed to get a chorus going for the song Vicki and I are working on...and the chords sounded a lot like another song...and then the penny dropped, so I changed it a little so it was the same and made it a secret homage to another favourite band from my formative years...
-
I'm up for the challenge. The best thing with these challenges is that no matter what you end up with you still get to listen to the other contestants songs. Kind of reassuring when the third verse is blank. That might be a pun.
-
Great stuff, Martin! If you need any help with anything...just shout :)
-
PaulAds,
"Had half an hour with ye olde 6120 this afternoon" Like your inventiveness playing on a retro Nokia :-)
neil
-
Ha...yeah...pre-Fender, of course :P
-
OK ;D ;D . I've got it, and will start throwing things at it as soon as ;D ;D
See you all in May ;D ;D
Great idea btw Paul ;D
-
How are all you guys getting on with the challenge? Don't forget it's open to all. Would be great to hear some stuff from some new members and if anybody would like any help please give me a shout
-
I think the word "challenge" is well chosen! I have finished recording my song, I just need to mix it now. The drum beat is absolutely awesome and I loved playing along to that. It's nothing like anything else I have done, which has made it worthwhile in itself. The breakdown was difficult, in that I found it hard to come up with something that fitted in with the rest of the song, but anyway, it's done.
-
Excellent...well done, folks!
It’s a great driving beat...the story goes that “topper” once got sacked from a band for playing too quietly (I think he was quite a more orthodox, jazz-influenced drummer) so when he joined a punk band, he divided to give the drums some hammer. I think this was his first proper recording with the band.
My clash-style one that sparked the idea for the drum challenge
http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=15145.0
was, I think, much easier for me because I know the original song so well.
It is quite a challenge...so I take my hat off to anyone who gives it a go :)
-
Got a song that nearly matches the beat, hurrah!
It is now screaming at me "what would John Lydon do now?". You have been warned!
(It is definitely NOT a love song...)
-
Great stuff, Adam...unleash the hounds :P
-
With it being a proper, real live drummer keeping time, the beat does wander a fair bit here and there. For those of us who've become accustomed to the regular beats of robot skin bashers, makes for harder work. You can't just cut bits from here and there and use them elsewhere, because they won't fit! No cheating/shortcuts allowed. :D
It brought it home to me,just how lazy I've become when recording,I'm not used the past couple of years to playing a part all the way through to keep time with the noise maker! Once I settled into the new/old routine,it was like good old live playing or jamming. Maybe it'll even bring a degree of spontaneity to the track.
Btw,I'm sure I don't need to tell any of you Grannies how to suck eggs, but if you think the 170bpm is fast, you can craft a song at half that speed which will still fit the drum track...just saying,it doesn't have to be frantic punk if yer not led that way. ;)
-
This Grannie doesn't have a bass guitar or a midi controller so I've done two versions of the drum track.....one stretched to go at 170bpm fixed tempo and one with a tempo map.....took a while but easier to 'create' a bass track. I'm hoping (through extensive note-taking) to be able to unstretch it all back to its original 'wild' tempo or use my guitar as a midi controller to do the bass - might have to use a different DAW for this.....or go with the tempo map (harder to move stuff around)
So I've got a song and fitted it - moved the chorus parts - got a very rough version....now to decide which way to finally do it....and to do it of course...and to mix it.....4 weeks should be enough though this will be fast work for me!
-
Sounds scarily convoluted for a man of my meagre skillz, young Cramer! :D
-
Yeah. The whole experience of playing a whole song with a "Real" drummer has been illuminating. Long time since I did that. Cut and paste no workee. Blimey @Viscount Cramer & His Orchestra You have been getting right on down to it. There is no way I could do that but I could play bass for you if you want :)
-
That's a mighty kind offer John and I might well call on you when I've got the shape and method sorted out......don't quite know what I'm going to do yet....makes my head hurt thinking about it.
The tempo map thing isn't hard to do just takes time. Contrary to my normal practice I'm actually trying to get stuff sorted out before I dive into it to hopefully make things easier later on.....making notes....crikey!
I'll let you know how I'm getting on in a couple of weeks. Maybe some backing vocals/harmonies as well?
Cheers!
-
Hey, no problems @Viscount Cramer & His Orchestra :)
-
I had a sit down with this today and have my rhythm guitars and bass done ;D
No idea where the melody or lyrics are going to take me! - but I really like my bare bones rhythm track (and I have no idea if they sound like the original track or not!?!?!)
The drums are very "live" with the bpm raising from 169 at the beginning to 179 at the end!!! - great fun
-
Yep. It's an absolute hoot this one. Especially with the variable bpm. Would encourage anybody who hasn't had a go to go for it
-
I've written one song so far that doesn't agree withe the drums.
Maybe I should write one that does.
-
At the suggestion of @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) I'm going to have a go!
Using it for an alternative, punky version of a song I have just recorded, which I've had to slow down (!) to get to 169bpm. Bass and guitars done, just the vocals to go - great fun!!
Dave
-
Great to see you're going to give it a go Dave.
-
I'm having a whole bunch of fun with this!
Most issues have been getting Ampire to make the guitar sound like a shy, hormonal and frustrated teen.
Also an effect question to everyone: Can you use a limiter after reverb efficiently without it jumping up and down gating the after trail of the reverb?
-
Also an effect question to everyone: Can you use a limiter after reverb efficiently without it jumping up and down gating the after trail of the reverb?
@Martinswede (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20851)
What effect are you after?
If you are using the limiter as a hard compressor then the limiter will most likely not be active on reverb tails (i.e. You will likely only need to set it to catch the peaks and high volume parts allowing you to turn everything up without clipping)
What are you trying to achieve with the limiter?
-
Thank you for your reply @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) !
I use the limiter to get rid of the highest peaks so it's easier to get a volume that matches the other tracks.
After reading what you wrote I think my problem might be a too high input gain. It might be better to increase the volume after the limiter and not before... or?
The problem first occurred when I mixed vocals that changed a lot in volume. There were both super high peaks and high peaks and I tried to fix it all at the same time. Retakes might seem like the best way to make things better but it was not an option.
Martin
-
Martin - if for vocals, not sure a limiter is your best option - I think certainly compression and then maybe volume automation, but limiting sounds very drastic... (though if anything it might lift up the reverb tails? I would probably compress before reverb anyway...). Depends on a lot of things of course and how it sounds to you...
-
Hi @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) !
Thank you for your advice!
The whole question was kind of a sidetrack and I don't think I will work with similar tracks in the future but it was also the first time I really had to work with highly varying volume levels. When I finally managed to get the vocals kind of even I added reverb and all kinds of things happened.
Anyway. This time I can do more retakes and I've also figure out how to add input compression and eq so I'm a little bit more prepared.
Also I listened to the Limiting episode of the Ian Shepard show. Outside of my understanding at times but mostly helpful.
-
@Martinswede (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20851)
I think using volume automation and compression is your best bet in this situation
I've also figure out how to add input compression and eq so I'm a little bit more prepared.
I would personally advise against this - a more flexible approach would be to record at a lower level and then apply EQ and compression AFTER recording, which will give you more options when mixing
If you mess up the EQ and/or compression whilst recording (or simply change your mind at a later point) then your recording may affected by the EQ & compression
You may find it better to record "dry" and then apply fx after - or if your PC/Mac has the juice you can add these insert effects and hear them whilst recording (assuming you are still able to keep the latency low enough so you don't hear a delay when recording)
-
Thanks again Boydie!
-
So, two weeks to go - how is everyone doing with their entries? All tapping your fingers thinking, come on end of May, release the dogs?! Hope everyone has had as much fun as I did. I was mightily relieved that my neighbours were away when I recorded this - but not as relieved as they were!
Bill
-
Great news, Bill!
I've hardly done a thing...I really need to get something cooking pretty quickly :o
How's everybody else doing?
-
Music track recorded and just finished the lyric, which are hardly Shakespeare but will hopefully record vocals soon ;D
-
Song sorted and if today was May 31st I'd have something to post....but want to rerecord everything....in the pursuit of perfection....or at least something better.....not better than perfection you understand.
-
Can't speak for Darren but I am very excited, our entry is coming along nicely :)
Look forward.to hearing and reviewing all the entries - avoided any previews (and the origiinal) like the plague not to be led in a particular direction!
Catch y'all around,
Scott.
-
Only just started recording. An overly ambitious track which breaks all the rules ;D Not sure I'm gonna have enough time though..... :o
-
Excellent to hear...thanks to everyone for having a go at this...I can't wait to hear what you all come up with :)
-
Great to hear the feedback from everyone for this comp. I think it's been a particularly interesting challenge as it's forced us all to reconsider our conventional methods which can't be a bad thing. I also think that the one week submission window is a really good idea. It focuses attention on the competition for a week or so. I hope everyone has enjoyed this challenge as much as I have. Really looking forward to hearing the submissions as I know that I'm going to be blown away with the creativity out there
-
Music completed just need to get the vocals done. Enjoyable and interesting, just wish the drummer could keep up! Does he need permission/copywriter crediting?
;D
Neil
-
So nearly there. Will be not safe for work, schools, churches or hospitals. But we don't care. (Actually we are a bit in two minds)
-

;D
Neil
As St Peter would likely confirm, it’s often more expedient to seek forgiveness rather than permission :P
-
Most of the music recorded. Trying to squeeze in as many learning-to-record-stuff exercises as possible. And some automation.
Vocals this weekend. Hopefully.
Martin
-
Excellent news, Martin! Can’t wait to hear it :)
-
Having a go at this myself and over egging it as always. Should be done by the deadline though, fingers crossed!
-
Overegg as much as possible Tom ☺ 10 days or so to go guys. Really looking forward to listening to all the different interpretations
-
I'm going to go right down to the wire on this...dont know if I will make it!
Instruments largely recorded, but no vocals yet and only lyrics for the chorus and I won't have a chance to record between 24th-27th :o
But pretty exciting!
Deadline is 31st right? Midnight? :D
-
Yeah...deadline is midnight on 31st May
I’ve got every confidence in you :)
-
Hi All,
Just over a week to go so I'm kicking off with a submission
http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=15401.0;topicseen
Please post your entries in Completed songs with "Drum Challenge" somewhere in the description by midnight on 31st May.
Good luck all :)
Cheers
John
-
Yes...cheers, John!
The drum challenge is now officially open for business...
-
Well I'm having a stab at it, but you're going to have to disqualify me if it's against the rules to feck with the arrangement which my brain won't fathom. Still using the drum track, just moving things around a bit. Is that OK?
Holy crap boydie's right - it speeds up! Oh well probably end up with a bottom-feeder mess anyway :D
-
Yeah @Paulski (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19241) as Eddie and the Hot Rods suggested, you’re welcome to do anything you wanna do :P
-
This is going SO well...I’m really loving hearing what you’ve all done with this.
Still a few days left...so there’s just enough time to get something cooking.
As a special treat...here’s Toppers mid-80’s version of the great Gene Krupa’s “Drumming Man”
I think I still have the 7” of this somewhere...
-
Just a quick question.
Is it the same as the monthly comp where each entrant has to review all the other entrants songs to qualify to vote?
-
Good question, Davy. I’m not much of a fan of rules, but I’d definitely take a dim view of it if someone didn’t bother to comment on everyone else’s entries...
-
Yeah,a good way to be Paul.
Speaking personally,I want to hear what everyone comes up with,so the rools don't matter anyway!
:)
-
I'm loving the diversity and imagination of all the entries. About two behind review wise but will be giving them a spin tomorrow. Great comp
-
I managed to review some of the songs this evening - WOW! - I was blown away by each and every entry!!!
I just can't quite believe the diversity from the same drum track!
I hope to get mine finished tomorrow but I have enjoyed every single song!!
-
Yeah...it’s been so good to hear what everyone has done in their own individual styles and how they’ve all taken on the challenge and gone on to create so many great songs from such a narrow starting point.
You’re a very brave and cool bunch of songwriters :-*
-
I think I got caught up reviewing today. Tonight. In between showers and bedtime stories for the grand kids. It's kind of amazing how differently the same basic drum track can be interpreted.
PaulAds and I are trying to hustle to finish our entry. I wouldn't be surprised if we keep polishing on it later, but I think we'll get something together enough to use in time. I hope. It may be tight.
-
Vicki sent me some lovely backing vocals - which was pretty amazing of here as I didn't have any melody I could send her...just a backing track...so I've been busy this afternoon and I think we have something in the bag...we're just checking it over but as we're just about out of time (and back to work tomorrow :( ) it'll do, we reckon.
Couple of days left, folks!
-
Threw down some vocals last night, so I have 2 more days to try and whip it into shape. tick tock...
I've been holding off listening to everyone else's until I'm done to avoid being influenced....
@Paulski (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19241) we have been messing around with the drum track as well, so you're not alone...
-
Great to have you involved @Ramshackles (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=6887) good luck getting over the line :)
Everyone’s free to do anything they like with the drums...
-

Argh!!
-
How long do we have for reviewing before voting?
I'm not gonna get round to reviewing until I've managed to submit mine - a lot of catching up to do!
-
there'll be at least a week to review and vote...
-
Absolutely blown away by this competition. Such an innovative idea Paul and the entries are fairly consistently excellent. And each has the DNA of one of my all time favourite Clash songs. It's also a really good example of how production and mixing can transform a drum track. Loving all the subtle differences in each song.
I reckon someone with PR know how should promote this. I'm sure some music sit3s and Clash fan pages would love this
-
Last day for submissions all :o

Hi All,
I'm just getting a Soundcloud playlist together but there are a couple of "private" tracks which won't allow me to add to a playlist. If you've got a private track and you want it on the playlist could you make it public please :)
Cheers
John
-
Ta for the full list John. It can be easy to miss listening to an entry, but I think I got them all.
-
Didn't work out for me this time but great comp (and great drums)! Thanks and good luck to all!
-
whoa - that's some list of competitors! ;D ;D
I still have about half of them to listen to - hope to get to it this weekend.
Thanks for posting the list (and hosting!) guys ;D ;D
-

Aw...I was really looking forward to hearing yours, @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124)
if you have anything you want to pursue after the deadline, I'd love to try to help out if I can...PM me if you fancy trying something...it's been a pretty pressurised month or so :)
-
Just popping in to say that I am unfortunately going to miss the deadline with my entry (I know I'm in with the DNMC entry so just being greedy - although 99% of the work on that is Scott, he deserves the lion share of the credit!). I'll probably be finished on the weekend and will post it up then but consider it out of the comp! Some great entries up there look forward to working my way through all the tracks!!
-
Aargh! It’s been a really big ask, Darren...looks like one great entry will have to do you this time around. I’ll be looking forward to hearing the finished version, though :)
-
Cheers Paul!
And yeah just been a busy month and I'm easily side tracked >.<! GREAT challenge though

Well Done all of you. I know a couple of you didn't make the deadline and that's a real shame as I think there were more treats in store. Hopefully we'll hear that output soon.
In the meantime, here's a revised list of all the entries. If I've missed anybody please let me know.
Just a reminder to anybody who has a private track, I can't include that in the playlist as Soundcloud doesn't allow me to do that (unless anybody knows better) I've got the playlist setup as a private list and will send the link when everybody is happy.

I’d like to say what a real pleasure it’s been to hear what you’ve all done with this. Thanks to everyone who entered, expressed an interest, reviewed any of the songs or anything else. What a lovely bunch of talented peeps you all are.
Thanks :)
Please take a week to have a listen to all the entries, and then PM John and myself with your top three. Voting closes at midnight on Friday 8th June.
Good luck everyone.
-
Shame you didn't get there @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124) . I too was looking forward to yours knowing you've got a liking for things punky.
I'll miss you too @Darren1664 (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20970) , promise!
Loving the Freedom Fighters by the way. I know this isn't the place to say it but......time, my man...time!
Still got two more to listen to!
-
Cheers @Viscount Cramer & His Orchestra !! :)
I agree about missing Adams entry! Be on the look out for it when it does decide to rear its head :)
Great selection for entries, I look forward to listening to them all!
Cheers
Darren
-
Wow ! I've spent quite a bit of time on this one today. Firstly trying to createxplain a playlist but for some reason Soundcloud seemed to keep rejecting the last two songs. Anybody else had that problem ? Anyway, listened to all the songs again and it's incredibly difficult to pick a top three let alone a winner. More listens required I think
-
I have votilerized. It was grueling! I am exhausted! Well, maybe just a little bit partly because all four of my grand-kids were here for DAYS! Well, half of them for a week and all of them overnight. Two nights. Plus a house FULL of people all day because we were supposed to have a picnic but the weather SUDDENLY TURNED WET AND COLD. But never mind all that. The votiring is done. Whew!
-
Got them, Vicki @CaliaMoko (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19928) ...great picks too!
-
For the record...I have voted too :)
Tough call...but a real pleasure to hear them all again.
Much respect to you all.

sorry what's the deadline for voting ? my bad 4 not paying attention... ;D ;D
-
June 8th, so this Friday. I'm still going through the entries, but plenty of time
-
Yep ! - Don't forget to vote before Friday
Tough decisions !
-
Yeah...votes are coming in...we have a good spread...but there are already three who appear to be forging ahead...
Every vote is really going to count!
-
I think I have now commented on all the entries. Whew! I didn't have much of anything helpful to add to any of them, but...oh well....something is better than nothing. I think. :P ::)
-
Thanks, Vicki...I think I’ve commented on them all too...I really hope all the entrants will also be able to find the time.
I always find it difficult to go much beyond saying “I really like it” or something equally lame/nondescript. It’s just nice to know that someone listened and took a minute or two to chip in with a remark.
-
I think that's me done too.
Listened, enjoyed, feedback'd, voted.
Apologies if I missed anyone out - tried my best not to. And thanks to everyone for taking part - it's been a real joy.
Best of luck to all!
Scott.

Great point made Vicki and Paul. It's great to get a listen, and a comment is an added bonus. It's a tough gig working through all these songs for sure but so worthwhile. We've got builders next door at the moment and to their credit they haven't got South coast fm on. Just another shit MOR station. Have just been sitting there withen my phones on listening to forum music exclusively
-
Man that was a tough choice but I have dropped my ballot into the ebox.
BTW - I just used a roulette wheel - they're all so fecking good ;D ;D
Paul

Still got a couple of days left to get your votes in...the deadline is midnight on Friday.
-
Votes pouring in now and it's tight at the top :)
A reminder that anybody can vote and if you've entered you should vote otherwise your entry will be void.
Please PM both @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253) and @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269)
Cheers
John

Last day to get your votes in!
There are still a couple of entrants who haven't voted yet...and the clock is ticking :o
Deadline is midnight...TONIGHT!
-
Now my votes are in. (I might have e-mailed them to you too @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) .)
Will the winner be honored with hosting the Summer (Camp) Comp? Or is it the World Cup this year...
Thanks for a great challenge!
-
Votes are in ....sorry for lateness and drunkenness
-
I are voted. :)
-
Voting is now CLOSED...I think we are all present and correct...John and I will gather our thoughts and go through the votes again carefully and will hope to make an announcement ASAP.
It's been a blast...a massive Thank You to everyone who got involved :)

Well Done to All !

Ok second attemp at posting as I timed out the last time....
I'm sorry to resurrect an old thread but after a long break from the forum I thought I would share the track I wrote for this competition as a way of saying hello (as I never did get it finished in time for the competition...)
Much easier to just say hello I know
Anyway here it is
Land of the Dead -
Caersws boys feed themselves on cans
of alcohol, lighter fluid, anything to hand
searching for the good times in these
love barrens lands
is like searching for the night life
there's none to be found
Hanging on the streets past midnight
rolling our drugs by street light
we're gonna get off our faces
and stumble around this place
Like we're oh ey oh like zombies
Land of the dead
no hopes
no dreams
no love

Yo Darren, good to see you around man.
I dig the track,kinda low key punk,subtle,driving energy. 8)
-
Hey ! Welcome back Darren - It's been a long time. I thought this was absolutely great - Did you record that at the time and then just decide not to enter or did you do it post competition. There's a great energy there. It reminded me of The Ramones in a lot of ways. Anyway, hope that you're going to be sticking around. All the best, John
-
Hi hi hi - nice to have you back. I also didn't make the competition in time but I'm glad you posted this! Definitely you with a bit of extra punky sprinkle. See you around!

@Skub (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20061) @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269) @adamfarr (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20124)
Thanks all :) it's has been a while but nice to be back
Thanks for the kind comments about the track. Pompz - I did record this at the time but kept searching for a second verse that never came and so gave up on it. I recently came back to it, took out some bad takes on the vocals and figured I wasn't far off after all and so it here it is.
Looking forward to catching up on the missed tunes 8)
All the best, Darren
