Title: Forum "Snapshot" Compilation Album
Post by: pompeyjazz on January 14, 2018, 05:52:00 PM
Hi All,

I'm starting a new thread on this as we have already got a list of potential contributors.

I've already had six submissions

Date for submissions, 1 month today, 14th February

For all of the people who have indicated interest, please pm me a link to the song in best quality .wav format via dropbox or other file share mechanism what you think is your own most suitable song for the album. There is no theme other than to highlight the forum and it does not have to be a new song. It must however be of a decent broadcast quality.

I will need song title, Artist name and composer(s)

Once I've got the songs in (and I appreciate that everybody who expressed an initial interest may not contribute) I will look at the next steps.

You could also suggest an album title  Smiley

Also - Volunteers required for artwork

Cheers

John

Hi John!

Great with a date set. I was a bit curios. Can't do much with colors I'm afraid. Tryin' to keep it real.

Hey

The song I wanted to submit for this too far off done so I don't think I will be submitting anything for this. Sure you have plenty anyway!

Do you have an album name yet? Maybe "Pompz and Circumstance"? :P

Looking forward to this!!

All the best

Darren

Not that it's any of my business Darren but why not submit 'Man Reborn'...that was your latest release and it's a cracking song that would grace any compilation.

I hadn't even consider using an already finished song :P thanks for pointing out Viscount...I will do just that!!  8)  8)

Hi All,

So closing date today and I'm going to close the window for submissions now as we've got 13 tracks.

The following songs will be on the compilation album.

Skub                 I'm Feelin Fine
Pompeyjazz      Take Me To Your Leader
Wicked Deeds      Music Plays
Bill Saunders      You Turned My World Around
Paul Ads              Busmans Holiday
Darren1664      Man Reborn
Vicki                 TBA
Viscount              Ain't That Enough
MartinSwede      Braver Than Brave
CrystalSuzy      Maggi's Living Room
Rightly         Almost A Baby
KevyC         The Courage To Choose
ScottLevi              Sleeves Up

I think there's a great selection.

Next job is to decide on a running order. Of course it could be random but I've had some thoughts and want to make sure we don't get two acoustic or piano based tracks back to back (Any thoughts ???)

Otherwise I'll come up with a suggested running order.

Any volunteers for Artwork ?????

Mastering ??? - I can quite easily run everything through my mastering setup but I've got limited skills in this area.

Name suggestions, I'll throw one in the hat - "We Are Forum"

A physical CD would be nice IMO as well as digital on the usual platforms. Obviously there would be a small cost involved in a physical CD - But I'm thinking only about £10 each for a run of 100 CD's plus distributing them to the contributors - Anyway thoughts please

Anything else, please feel free to PM me

Cheers

John

That's one helluva song Darren, it had me gigglin' like a  japanese school girl.

I'm very much looking forward to the materialization of this album project.

Hey can I suggest an album title?

"Vanity Project"

It is hard and implies some self-irony..

I don't know, maybe "Snapshots"
If I had a list of the songs it'd give me something to work with.
If you've got an album title, you've soon got ideas for the artwork (I'm not good with artwork)

Title: Re: Forum "Snapshot" Compilation Album

Physical CDs
I like the idea and I'm good with the probable £10 each. However, it appears it would be prohibitively expensive to send me my share...although, now that I'm thinking about it, you might be able to send to Canada for a fraction of the price. I'll have to see if it would be awkward to go to Canada to pick them up. I live right next door and know a few people who wouldn't mind receiving them for me. Anyway, if that won't work, I could have CDs made here for myself, too.

Album title
I have no new ideas, but I like "We Are Forum" or "Snapshots". The former makes me think of Greek columns and togas. Snapshots make me think of a collage of photos. Considering what the artwork might look like. It would probably be easy to find something free to use online for a cover image.

That's all the thoughts I have at the moment.

Whey fantastic job John, seems all is running smoothly!

I'm happy to put the 10 towards physical copies, and  have a close friend in graphic design (painted my avatar for me too xD) so should be able to get them to help if we have a direction for the artwork.

If you can put it up in a random order somewhere on the web so we can have a listen might be able to give some suggestions on running order easier, else a stab from memory of these awesome tunes or forum searches.

Exciting stuff, thanks for making it happen!

All the best,
Scott.

Looks good .... can you list my artist name as "Kevin ISM"?

I quite like "We are Forum" but some alternative sggestions for title : "Secret Voices" or "Hidden Voices" "Voices of the Forum" or "Songs from the Forum"

As it is a forum project I would be happy to support it by offering to do the mastering for each track

I would just need to know whether the tracks have already been mastered or not

Let me know...

One thing I forgot guys, I need your official artist names and composer names. Also has anybody cracked the whole wav metadata tag thingy as that does my head in. Scott, get your mate on board now ! A promise of fame and fortune should be more than enough  ;D
Title: Re: Forum "Snapshot" Compilation Album
Post by: CaliaMoko on February 14, 2018, 10:41:08 PM
Do you have Audacity? If not, it's free and it does metadata tags pretty well. I think. If I understand correctly. I'm not good with terminology. But when I use Audacity to export an mp3 file, it automatically pops up a window asking for a variety of information that subsequently shows up when I'm playing the file. And you can save time by entering info that stays the same for each song (like date, album title) and save it, then enter the rest of the information for each song as needed.

Thanks Vicki.  Yes I started with Audacity.  I will have to check that out tomorrow  :)

Oh my bad - didn't notice this thread -  is it too late?

It'd be good to have you on the album Paulski, you're a favourite of mine.
I hope you've already sent something in.

A physical cd would be good. If we could keep the entries under 17 we could have a cover with snapshots of the contributors.

I'm happy to pay ten quid for a physical copy.
I think putting playing sequence up for a vote is a very bad idea, we'd get lost in details and unnecessary disputes.
If Pompey is happy to take these final decisions then he should do it.

G'day all.

More than happy to do this, otherwise we'll get bogged down. I'll burn a CD today so I can listen in the car for a few days and then propose a running order - Unless anybody violently disagrees  :)

I would love a physical CD and of course happy to contribute my share of the costs. My track has been mastered, but I could supply raw mix as I am sure Boydie could improve it. Whatever is easiest, don't want to create any unnecessary work. I think the important things is to try to achieve consistency of levels, dynamics and so on throughout the album if that's possible.

Totally agree Bill. I'm sure Boydie will do the biz  :)

I've just set up a new Bandcamp account and will upload all of the tracks for preview at some stage. Obviously I don't want to publish anything yet but I wanted to see if everybody could access the page with a test track before I go any further.

Can you guys access this page and play the track ?????

Mastering of my track would be much appreciated.

Is it possible to host an image file or something of that sorts for download so you can burn your own CD?

Well I'm tickled PINK I was allowed to join late - whew.
Good idea re mastering to get the levels the same - I had that challenge on the Christmas compilation.
I've sent in my raw mix - let me know if I can help in any way (inc. $$)

Just to say, @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) has now mastered my track, and I am absolutely thrilled with what he has done. I honestly thought my attempt had been pretty good, but he has taken it to another level entirely.

It would be great to have Boydie master every track on the album, to showcase it to the highest possible standard.

@pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269)  I have just downloaded them and I am getting organized ready to start

I just need to check the following:

Which version of "Take Me To Your Leader" do I need to work on - there is an "unmastered" and an "unmastered correct levels" version  ???

I am assuming it it the "correct levels" one but am a little confused as both are in the ZIP file

@crystalsuzy (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18947)  Maggi's Living Room also has "mastered" in the title - does this mean it has been mastered?? - Do you want to leave it as it is or do you want to send me an "unmastered" one so that I can master it with the others. I am happy either way but thought it best to check before I get cracking

I am really looking forward to working on all of these great songs  ;D ;D ;D

Hi Boydie, You can do whatever you think will sound best for this album. I thought John wanted a mastered track, and that's the only mastered song I had, so that's what I sent him. Does it sound OK to you?  I'm really not sure what mastering involves, but if you need to, can you remaster this track so that fits with the other songs, or would you want an un-mastered track? I'm fine either way.
Thanks for doing this.
CS  :)

@crystalsuzy (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18947) If you have a song that is not mastered that you would prefer to have on the album please send me that one

If the one you have sent is the one you want on the album are you able to send me an unmastered version of this one

If the one you have sent is the one you want but you don't have an unmastered version don't panic as we can make sure it fits with the others

Please let me know as soon as you can which option you prefer - it is completely up to you

Well now, I don't know what track to send if it doesn't have to be a mastered one...a softer one or a more rocking one...hmmm? :P
Does the length matter? Is 5:30 mins too long, if I choose a different song? How do I send you the song?
Thanks, CS

When you have the song the easiest way would be to upload the WAV to SoundCloud, make sure that you make the track downloadable in permissions and then send me the link to the song so I can download it

@crystalsuzy (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18947)  This should be a call for @pompeyjazz (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20269)  to make as I am simply doing the mastering so I would suggest contacting him to decide on the song

Excellent work Pompey.
I've listened to about 6 tracks only, I thought I'd have my fixed favorites but the album is constant surprises and there's no filler at all.

A collection of works from committed artists not obliged by the restrictive and conservative notions of what's commercial and considered modern.

The album surpasses my hopes.

I'd like to have it in a physical format.
And if others are as inspired as I am, maybe we'll get a sequel.

Thanks for making the effort thus far.

I'm hoping to get 150 copies done. That will be 10 copies each.

Looking at the costs, hopefully around about £10 each will cover the production of the CD's and the postage to each contributor.

@Wicked Deeds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=19231) - Could you let me have details of the company that sorted your CD ?

Anybody up for sleeve notes ???

With regard to artwork there's a few things on the boil but I'm going to concentrate on getting the music sorted first.

Would anybody like to take the artwork / sleeve notes on in this or a separate thread ??

Thanks to everybody for their wonderful support and agree that it is a fabulous diverse listen highlighting the great talent on the forum  :)

A quick “thanks” from me too for taking this on, John...it’s a great idea and a brilliant showcase for the talent here...gawd bless ya, guvnor!

I’ll chip in £10 up front to help with costs...but won’t need a physical cd...I’ll burn my own...

Can you drop me a line with details of where to send the money?

I thank ye.

Ps I think someone (Tone?) recommended these guys

You know who would be perfect for the sleeve notes? @ScottLevi (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20495) (I know I’m very good at volunteering other people but, Scott if you were up for it...)

And yes, please let us know where to start sending the dosh...

Hey

Cheers Adam, it's an honour to be volunteered got anything :) Had to ohlr what sleeve notes are, just about about each artist? Will do some more research but happy to put something together over the weekend.

Had a listen to the playlist on the commute this morning and boy it is sounding good, a few gems I hadn't heard before too. Real nice variety of talent and fits together well - feel a bit out of place amongst all the great talent but doubt I'm the only one -there's great respect for each other here.

And yes pomp I've us the darts for the $$.

Catch y'all soon,
Scott

Yeah I won't need a physical copy either. I don't do physical music (or anything for that matter except books) these days. I am more than happy to contribute £10 to this though!

And I have to say massive thank you to John. What a great project and what a great bunch of tracks they are. So hope we do do this again!!

All the best

Yeah, being such an old fart I forgot that people don't do physical any more. I would still like to get a hard copy made but need to gauge interest. I think 100 may suffice?  Also there is the question of the physical cd format as there are zillions of formats. I was thinking simple sleeve, no jewel case etc etc. Anyway, all up for discussion so thoughts all  :)
Title: Re: Forum "Snapshot" Compilation Album

My thoughts....

1. I want physical CDs, but it costs too much to mail them to me, although I might be able to arrange something with a friend in Canada. It looks like shipping to Canada is a fraction of the cost of shipping to the U.S.A. I need to check on carrying them across the border, though. <<pause while I do that>>  Okay, it's going to be complicated to find out if I can have a CD shipped to my friend in Canada and then go to her house and pick it up and carry it across the border. So I think I'd like to download WAV files, if they'll be available, so I can burn my own.

2. I want to contribute to the costs, and I want to sell copies. Where do I send the money? And how? PayPal would be pretty easy for me. And I will need cover art and CD label art. Oh dear, this is going to be complicated. Well, I'll figure that part out. Maybe I'll forget about the physical CD thing and just tell people where to buy digital copies online. And doesn't CD Baby do physical CDs on demand? I could have that wrong....

So those are my disjointed thoughts. In case they're helpful. ::)  :P ???

I've never done one but maybe a kickstarter campaign would be a place to manage all the finances?
A CD would be cool, but I'd just be ripping it to a thumb drive anyway. But still, a CD would be cool  ;D

I was thinking Bandcamp as I've used that before.

I need to set up a new profile on Bandcamp and also sort out a bank account and paypal account to keep all the money we're going to make separate  ;D

Hopefully I should have done this in the next few days but pretty busy with other stuff at the moment

UPDATE

Boydie has done a cracking job and completed all the masters.  I've created a Bandcamp page which is private atm and uploaded all the songs there.

Artwork..... Have had several offers for getting the artwork together and @nooms (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=11264)  and @Viscount Cramer & His Orchestra have kindly sent me examples. How do we choose which artwork to use ????

Sleeve Notes @ScottLevi (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20495) are you up for this, otherwise we could ask everyone to provide an artist profile to add to the Bandcamp page or I could use existing Soundcloud profiles ?

Physical CD, more news soon

Cheers all

John

OK all. Here's the latest.  The music is all in and mastered by maestro @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) So as there has been minimal interest in a physical Cd I'm intending to release the album on Bandcamp shortly on a pay what you like basis. I'll use the artwork that's been sent to me already. I'll add the individual artist inormation based on Soundcloud profiles unless anyone says otherwise.  I also intend to upload to Amuse so we get all of the songs on all media platforms. ITunes etc etc. With regard to any monies made I would like to give it all to a charity started by an amazing guy named Mo (See later post for details) who dug something out of my earthly body using advanced key hole stuff.  Anyway enough of the emotional stuff... If you disagree please let me know. PLUS if anyone can promote your album please do it  :)

Title: Re: Forum "Snapshot" Compilation Album
Post by: CaliaMoko on March 22, 2018, 04:34:40 PM
I always choose my charities by looking up their ratings, but I can't find anything about this one. I assume it's British? I looked in guidestar.org.uk, but couldn't find anything there. Who benefits from it? It says, "LAPR&D was established by patients in 2012 and has one overriding aim: to improve patient care and work together to beat Liver and Pancreatic cancer," but it doesn't say for what population base. And I don't know how much of its funding goes toward its charitable purpose and how much to administration expenses.

Sorry to be difficult, but I am really picky about my charitable donations. I am very pleased to see a charity working on pancreatic cancer, but I would like to know more.

Ultimately, to be fair, I will go with whatever the final decision is, regardless. Well, almost regardless. If it turns out to be a total scam, I'll object a bit to that. I seriously doubt that's the case, though.

It's a fine album guys, well done.  Along with Paul Ads' excellent release it was my commuting companion every day this week.  Even though I've only been here less than a year, listening to a lot of the tracks felt like meeting up with old friends since I remembered a lot of them from here.  It's diverse but somehow hangs together really well (and I confess I had my doubts it would do that).  Nice one Pompey.

I must say, like you I've been listening a lot to forum members albums. Big thumbs up for excellent albums by @PaulAds (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=20253)  and @Viscount Cramer & His Orchestra both of which I've listened to in their entirety this evening. Bandcamp stats are scary. You get a breakdown of complete plays, partial plays and skips. Not very many people listen to complete tracks these days let alone albums

For all of you listeners out there. Just an update on the album. I've just sent the proceeds of the album sales to the charity. A total of 127 quid with Bandcamp taking their cut. I just want to thank everyone who was involved in contributing to this album, fabulous songs and excellent production from @Boydie (http://www.songwriterforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=18510) plus artwork from @Viscount Cramer & His Orchestra .Overall though it is fecking poor that nobody else apart from the contributors and a couple of other people bothered to do any community promotional work. Anyway, rant over 😨 p.s I friggin hate charity stuff generally especially if they bang on your front door.
