Title: Forum Member Covers
Post by: Skub on September 10, 2017, 08:21:03 PM
This is a thread based on the original idea from Martinswede, where the concept was, with permission from the writer, for another forum member to do their own version of the original song.

So before Boydie wastes time performing open heart surgery on the forum software, this thread is a taster to see if there is enough prolonged interest to warrant a forum sub-section. If not, sure it may make a cool thread to visit and contribute on occasion.  :)

Boydie mentioned the rules in another thread that

1. Permission must be granted from the original songwriter

2. The original song must have been posted in 'Finished songs' at least 3 months ago.

I only qualify for number one. The delb0y song is 2 months old and while PaulAds song is an old tune,it hasn't been posted on the forum..to my knowledge, but for the purposes of getting the ball rolling on Martin's idea,I thought those rules may apply from this time onward. Just look on this as the prototype.  :D

This is the original version of delb0y's 'Ten Degrees Colder',a wonderful Gordon Lightfoot style folk song.

And this is the link to my cover version.

This is the link to PaulAds angsty heartbreak,'So Haunt Me'.

And this is my cover tribute.

I love what you've done with both of these, Davy...and it's a lovely thing to have someone devote some of their time and talent like this.

Thank you  :)

Superb job on both of these, and I must say it was very delightful and humbling to have someone cover one of my songs.  ;D

Great that you got things started with this cover stuff!

Nice covers. They both have a warm feeling to them.

Really nice take on those covers, I really like the way they don't try to copy the originals.
I can't see myself having enough time to do anyone else's song justice, but great to follow all the progress.

I thinks it's a top idea

I've already learnt a paul Ads song, "Stand down"

I havent recorded it yet.
and it'd be fun to hear anyone covering me!

for me, hearing someone cover my song helps me see it in a different light,
it could help me a lot. And it's fun.

PaulAds seems a popular chap to cover. Lots of other writers connect with his songs. So Haunt me is haunting me!
I agree Rightly, hearing a different version of your song can open all kinds of doors and give fresh perspective.
I don't imagine this thread will be very busy, but it would be cool to have regular contributors.

Can we have a separate page for Paul Ads covers as well. Seems like we're all inspired by his songs and that's what this forum should be all about. Sharing, encouraging,  helping and giving useful advice  :)

Digging this thread. And love both original song choices.

Great guitar work on Del's original which I really, really like.

I think that your version of Paul's tune really suits your vocal delivery.
Cool

Title: Forum Member Covers - Montydog's Carolina Bound
Post by: Neil C on September 16, 2017, 10:28:26 AM
Hi, so here's my cover of Montdog's fab tune.

Here's the original https://soundcloud.com/alan-walker-4/carolina-bound (https://soundcloud.com/alan-walker-4/carolina-bound)

And here's my bouncy pop version which was a blast to record. It is slightly nervy interpreting someone else's pride and joy but also quite liberating and fun in equal measure if you think you bring something new to the party.

Thanks for listening and to Alan to the tune.

I enjoyed that listen Neil.

Alan's original has a great folky feel and your version works well, giving the song a sort of lazy 'Lynyrd Skynyrd' country rock feel.

I hadn't heard Alan's song before,so it was good to catch up on a blast from the past.  8)

This is a great idea. Occasionally, I hear a song on this forum and think about offering a different interpretation of it. Rightlys There to Disappear is one that springs to mind.
I've had Offers of remixing tracks which I think is also a great idea (my problem is my iPad doesn't allow me to export files which is damn annoying)
Sometimes I hear other people's songs and I think in my head that they are only a couple of melodic tweaks away from being a sure fire hit. But it's sometimes hard to explain what you mean when you are writing it out in a reply.

An interesting theoretical question for you all. Say for example I had offered to record a backing track for a song in works in progress, had liaison with the writer, recorded another version of the backing track and added the writers vocals, then asked permission from the writer to post the song on the forum for feedback but heard nothing, what would you do ? Even if you thought that the track you recorded was reasonable?  Discuss....
Title: Re: Forum Member Covers

Hi John

I reckon that if you did a great job with a song that turned out very well indeed but the main writer hadn't got back to you about it, it'd be highly likely for them to throw a hissy fit if it was posted on the forum  :(
It's hard for me to imagine them not being happy with it, but unless they'd had a mishap or something equally unusual that meant they couldn't type a quick email or PM, I'd have to assume it just wasn't what they had in mind for the song. I guess it's almost totally their intellectual property if it's their lyrics and melody...even if you - hypothetically - provided a fantastic backing track to replace their otherwise perhaps somewhat less-fantastic one, for example. It'd be quite a kick in the knackers after putting such a lot of effort in...

Yes, I think your need explicit permission. I think I'm going to pose a similar point about co-writes on a new thread.

Yo yo,

That is an interesting one, and I think it's a **** move not to reply to you if they have seen it and decided they didn't like it. If you've agreed prior to work together and you've spent time on it then I think there's an assumption that you'll be able to one day share your expression and effort - and it should be their request "hey cheers but I've got a different idea for this".

How long's it been? There's always things that can crop up and distract people so I'd give them a fair bit of time, even if you're excited, but then a private SoundCloud link for the forum would seem quite fair to me.

IDK though, maybe I just enjoy being the devil's advocate..

Cheers,
Scott

I'd assume they did not like it and leave it alone until they contacted me and if they didn't contact me then they clearly didn't like it so I'd dump it!!

Not participating in this because I don't have time (or resources) to record my own cover of somebody's tune. However, one of the biggest honors I can get as a songwriter is to be covered.
I hope that you all feel the same way. This is a super cool thread.

I'd say that is opening a window. IMO the question was 'Is this possible?' and the answer was 'YES!'.

I have long been an admirer of the feeling and emotion Rightly puts into his unconventional songs and I'm always moved by the depths of his lyrics. It was, therefore, with some trepidation mixed with excitement, that and with his permission,I recorded a version of his song,'All the Best People Have Gone Home'.

I thought to approach the song retaining the raw, stripped back aspect and attempting to make it as angsty and emotive as I could.

I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I did working on it.  :)

As usual I include the original song, then my cover.

That was a really beautiful cover, skub. Beautifully sung and I liked what you did with the music. It highlighted the lyrics and mood really well.

Beautiful song, Rightly. I hadn't heard it before. I was overwhelmed  with grief with all of their deaths. The passing of Prince in particular had a deep effect. His death was instrumental in my songwriting journey. Somehow the doors opened the day he died, and I wrote my second ever song. Then they came one after another in a creative wave that seemed almost out of my hands. I see now it wasn't just me. Lovely tribute.

Did a great job with this, Davy...I had a listen this afternoon and really enjoyed it.

You’re bang on the money about rightly’s lyrics...he’s a proper genius in his writing...with a style all his own.

It’s a highly original take on a highly original lyric...how original is that.

I love the groove you’re in at the minute...fearlessly plunging into it like a man possessed  :)

Lynn

hey, yes thanks Lynn. Bowies death was a surprise for me, confusing.
I distinctly remember thinking - Along with Prince, Bowie was a massive influence on me personally. After hearing Prince was gone it took me weeks to believe it. Cohen was also an inflence, still is, but after Bowie and Prince were gone I was sort of hardened and could accept that Cohen was old and had lived a rich life.

I didn't really care for the local musicians cover song tributes - though well intended,I just didn't know what to make of it all.
My song, "All the best people have gone home" came about almost effortlessly.
There's a connecting chord in it that I found in Prince's "Sometimes it snows in April".

And a big thanks to Davy!
I was delighted to get news of the cover/interpretation.
I was busy with exams at the time and listened intermintently over a few days.
The feeling was touching and the divergence from the original won me over. ;D.
It's unique, I'll appreciate it forever. My songs are important for me.

I'm really too busy to record and post my attempt at my Paul Ads cover, but I will get around to it.

I'm also very keen to get another track finished, where I used most of the Lyrics of a track I didn't hear, written by Hardtwistmusic "The truth that really hurts".

I'll need to ask him his permission to post it.

Exams are robbing me of my joy, and along with a new romance they're slowing me down.

Thanks Skub. When Lynn and Dave sent me this I was bouncing about the ceiling. It made my day.

They turned my love song into a 1930s Appalachian ballad so I can see why you think its countrified. Although some people may think Taylor Swift rather than the Carter Family when reading your comment, but I know what you mean.

I see you picked up some menace in the lyrics. That may have been intentional to throw people off the scent, or it may have been an accident. Alternatively it may be I'm just weird. You have to decide which it is. One of the beauties of song writing.

You're not the only one who's mentioned I sound like Syd but I don't really see the comparison. He was head and shoulders above me.

Finally, a great big thank you to Lynn and Dave for turning my song into something special. Very much appreciated.

I love the sense of melody and fun Vicki puts into her songs and we've worked together in the past,so I thought I'd try a cover of her fun song,'I need room for my legs'. The song stands on it's own feet in a simple, uncluttered format, thus I thought I'll strip it right back to vocals only. Daring or what?  :D

Here's Vicki's original.

And here's my cover.

Good idea on the handclaps,Martin.Track tweaked. I settled for tambourine though,a little less intrusive. :)

Glad you liked it Kev.  :)

Good stuff - way to busy to listen and review stuff at the moment - hope to catch up soon - but just wanted to congratulate you on both versions of this quirky comedy song - sort of song that used to regularly make the charts many moons ago....made me smile.

Any covers coming up?

I was planning to record a cover of jacksimmons great song Strawberry Season in the next few days but it will be delayed due to holiday season. And work...

Keep covering with permission,

Martin

Ok, at last I did a all-in-one-take on jacksimmons Strawberry Season.

Great song, thanks for the opportunity!

I had many approaches to this song. Piano, electric, learning to make decent drum loops but in the end I decided that it'd go nowhere with unrealistic plans.

There are some weird overdubs/echos that I can't account for. Maybe just room noise or ghosts.

Here's the tune:

Hey Martin.

It was really interesting to hear Jack's big production broken down to just guitar and vocals.

Two things were apparent to me,firstly the song stands proudly on it's own and secondly, you did a charming job putting your own stamp on the song.

It was also cool to revisit Jack's original composition.

Top cover.  8)

Rightly sent me demo of one of his tracks "End Of The War" and I've covered it in a slightly different style to the original.

It's a super song and I hope I've done it justice

Thanks Rightly  :)

Nice to hear that you liked it! A great song works well deconstructed. (Even when you play an A major in the wrong place.)

pompeyjazz - Your cover reminds me of both Pink Floyd and Smashing Pumpkins. That's kind of a great combo.

Hey Martin.  Thanks so much. This is such a good song on so many levels and it's difficult working on an interpretation and hoping you have done it some justice

Shades of Roger Waters on this pomps.

It's a real listener's song,I'll be back to this a time or two.  :)

Reposted on s/c it deserves more attention.

I'm very happy with  this. Any differences from the original is most welcome as long as the song is still recognised.
This is very well done, it shows me different possible  ways to take the song. Songs from me are never finished but have a life of their own.

Thanks so much for the new interpretation Pompeyjazz!

Here's another cover of a Rightly song "Whistles and Bells"

Different to the original but I guess that's what interpretation is all about.

Have really enjoyed doing these covers. Fascinating  :)

Loving this John, there'll be many more listens.

We could do a thread on Rightly covers alone, rich picking ground!

Some of your best work here J.

It'd be cool if you posted the original versions of the songs, just so we can revisit, yanno.  :)

I feel really flattered to be covered by pompeyjazz, and others here on the forum.
It helps me see how the song can develop and improve.
It helps me hear what it means to the listener, this particular aspect is often a surprise.

This leaves me feeling inspired!

Thanks Pompeyjazz!!
