Title: Down for the Count - collab with Charles Silhan
Post by: Paulski on August 11, 2017, 03:52:29 PM
Hi guys

Charles created this funky track and I took a run at adding lyrics and an organ solo.
Looking forward to your informed comments - am I swinging out of my wheel-house in this genre?  ;D ;D Thanks in anticipation..

Down for the Count
Funky music: Charles Silhan
Lyrics/vocals/organ: Paulski

When I was twenty I got to think I was a pretty tough dude
But Love, well love was pretty tough too
And one Saturday night - I was just itching for a fight
The time was right - to strike

I climbed into that ring with him
And I took my best swing at him
But he hit me with a shot to the head
Then he hit me with a shot to the heart!
And I went down
Yeah I went down for the count.

Couple years go by
I figured it was time to make another try
Saturday night
Time to fight
Set things right

chorus

Now if you ever have to take on Love
You come to me, and I'll give you some good advice

You gotta climb into that ring with him
And you gotta take your best swing at him
But watch out for those shots to the head
And watch out for those shots to the heart!
Or you'll go down
You'll go down
Yeah, you'll go down for the count!

Hey Paulski - you already know my views on this one from the work in progress thread, but just confirming I still love it!  Great combination of the backing music and your narration.  Especially when you go "uhh!" at 1:59 before the organ solo... the ghost of James Brown is in town.

Really funky stuff and a very interesting vocal - I love the talk/sing combination and it's nice to see yet another side to you Paulski, very diverse.

I thought the supporting funky music was brilliant so well done Charles and excellent performance on the vocal.

Cracking tune  :)

Yo Paul.

Some groove goin on here fo sho.  8)

Your vocals gel with the track perfectly, love the organ too. Not many singers could carry this one off convincingly (Holds up hand) but you not only carry it off,you sell that sucker on ebay with conviction.  8)

A brilliant collab,sincerely well done.  :)

Hey Paul, excellent collaboration! Love the funky keyboards and the organ solo is ace. You carry off this theatrical type stuff so well! Not your usual style but interesting deviation!
Good stuff!
Cheers

Stepping back into the 70's, the funky is irresistible to me. Vocals and lyrics and stop on. And then we get to the organ solo which I love.
Neil Young and JB's love child!

How did I miss this Paulski?  Funky as fugg. Love the Rhodes and your vocals and the brass is great. Did you get your dirtbox out as well ? Wicked vst man  :)

Great stuff! It's all been said above  - but surely there was a missed opportunity for at least an 8 count on the high hat after "down for the count"?! Only half joking as I think that could really add some extra tension...

Just extra sprinkles, though, as this is a mighty fine cake for sure.

Love the funky vibe. That snare sounds a bit plastic'ie but still it works. The brass is nice, and so is the guitar.. really well come together and tight.. The talking reminds me of Isaac Hayes lol.. Although I was kind of expecting some sort of singing part. aNYWAYS.. this is really good!!! A great intro kind of part for a jazz fusion song. Keep it up man

Hey guys - thanks for the reviews!

@Neil C - thanks - yep Chaz did a good job on funking this up. But who is JB - Jambrains or Jeb Bush?  ;D ;D

@pompeyjazz - thanks John! That dirtbag is my go-to organ these days - think it's still free too  ;D

@adamfarr - cheers Adam - the lyrics were a late addition to this but good sugg on the count-down.

@Outss - thanks for the kind words. Isaac Hayes? That's a new one. Have to listen to Shaft again...

@digger72 - cheers digger - out of my comfort zone and all  ;D Chaz put all the work in - I just tried to stay out of his backing track's way  ;D
