Yeah ! Come on everyone, wax up those surfboards, dig out that old hawaiin shirt (or top) thats been hanging in the wardrobe for the last ten years, pour yourself something long and cool with maybe a strawberry floating on the top and get some creative writing on the lounger  :)

Sure I can throw something together, sounds like fun and if last year's Halloween competition is anything to go by I'm very excited to hear the entries!

Reminds me I put a playlist together of some of last year's, but plenty of non-soundcloud entries missed out.

No, I have decided because of all the uproar I wont do this!

Hi, New to this site - which looks amazing by the way!  So how do we enter this comp - and I assume it is just motivation to get writing and reflecting on others' writing?  Once we have written our song - of normal song length - where do we submit it?  thanks
Title: Re: Open Song competition?

Once we have written our song - of normal song length - where do we submit it?  thanks

We normally post the finished entries in Finished Songs, saying in the title its a Summer Competition Entry & including the lyrics & a bit about the song
There is usually a rule that you must review all the other entries to enter your own song ...
Welcome to the forum by the way  :)

Just to clarify, are these to be summer songs or beach songs? Neil's original post mentioned:

Theme: beach/holiday

which is cool... except my new summer song doesn't mention either...
Title: Re: Open Song competition?

Derek Im not mentioning summer or beach in my entry...its a instrumental & Im relying on the listener to mention them  :)

Hi!

I read the entry post so I got that I got it wrong.
I thought June was the posting month but I've been
seeing posts already. I'm just thinking out loud.

The theme seems a bit uninspiring for a personal song
but a fictive one might work.

My first lines are:

The girls are topless and tanned
My feet are covered in sand

Thanks for the opportunity to compete!

Hi All - We've had a few queries regarding the rules, so after deliberation between the organisers, here we go....

1. Theme - Summer or beach, doesn't have to mention those words but must apply to theme
2. One entry per member + one collab allowed
3. Post in finished songs with note (Summer Competition)
4. Last posting date - 30th June
5. The organisers will post a list of entries after 30th June
6. Anybody can vote for their top song, all entrants must cast a vote for their song to be eligible
7. You cannot vote for your own song even if it is by far the best entry
8. Voting closes - Midnight 14th July

Cheers

John

Thank you for posting the rules!
It all seems quite easy to follow.

You have not mentioned that by entering a song you
automatically allow it to be played by campfires by anyone
no matter how skilled or unskilled in music they are.
But I guess that's just common sense.

Just double checking the rules before I wax down any surfboards:
There's a list of who's allowed to enter on the first link - are the rest of us cheerleaders this time? (That's cool if so, I've got pompoms).
Also do entries count as one of your 14-day quota or are comps separate?
Still new here and don't want to commit any board faux pas.

Thats just a list of people whove expressed interest in writing a song for the comp...people often say theyre interested but then dont manage it, so I think thats what Neil means when he says 'entrants may include'
Anyone can have a go  :)
Yes the song will count as one of your 14 day quota

What have we done before? I dont remember the SOTM ever stopping bcos there was a competition running?
I mean the competition is running for 2 months so you could post 4 songs in that time, but most people will only enter one in the comp (2 if they collaborate) so there should be plenty of songs for SOTM
Title: Re: Open Song competition?

It's a lot of listening for folk to do and on two fronts. I dunno perhaps it'll work ok.

So I read the rules again.
If person X gets 70% of the votes but forgets to vote personally
the person with the second largest amount of votes win?
Title: Re: Open Song competition?
Post by: CaliaMoko on May 22, 2017, 09:30:46 PM
Yes, it is a lot of listening, but I think it'll work fine. It'll be the fourth such challenge since I became active here--there was the Valentine "happy love song with a twist" February 2016, then the summer "Bare Bones" challenge, and most recently we had the "spooky or something" (I might be remembering the theme of that one slightly wrongly) last autumn. We also had the song of the month every month without fail. It all worked.

If you can't listen to all the entries, just listen to as many as you can. If you listen to them as they are posted, you'll have an idea which ones appeal most to you and you can go back and review only those.

Vicki

Yep. Come on you guys. It sounds like we've got loads of entrants for our fabulous competition and I must say that there are some exceptional songs in there. Still over a week to go so no hurry before the judges get dancing or really maybe get out of their comfy arm chairs

Arrgg  :-\

Been struggling with this one...all my gear is still packed away as we're still having loads of work done in the house...

I ditched my original idea, then I fancied doing something about the "Spanish City" in Whitley Bay...which holds fond memories for most folks around Newcastle...and was immortalised in Dire Straits rather fantastic "tunnel of love"

"Cullercoats and Whitley Bay...

Girl it looks so pretty to me
Just like it always did
Like the Spanish City to me
When we were kids"

It's been recently regenerated as it had gone down the toilet somewhat over the years since its heyday...if indeed it had a heyday...it always struck me as being pretty rotten to be honest, though almost everyone round here loves it all the same

Anyway...it turned into a bit of a fiasco, ended up as a kind of bitter diatribe monologue kind of thing...so I ditched that too and am back to square one.

I've written something just now along my original lines and hope to get a half hour this week to bang a vocal down quickly...possibly with a microphone in one hand and a paint-brush in the other...

I really don't want to miss the boat on the competition...there are loads of great entries...

Wish me luck please :)

Good Luck PaulAds!

Six days to go. It should be a breeze.
I believe I've heard all of the summer songs posted so far and
none of them has that much monologue. It might be an interesting
angle. Some noir inspired escapism staged on S:t Helena would
capture the holiday spirit like nothing else.

Happy painting!  :)

Whitley Bay, spent a wonderful new year there in 83 or 84. Think the Metro was just open. I was working with a bunch of Georgie guys who thought I was a Cockney  ???

1. Good luck PaulAds. Direct your choir with the paint brush. It'll be great.

2. I screwed up. I posted a song too recently--June 21--and won't be able to post my summer song in Finished songs. What do I do? It isn't done yet but, one way or another, I plan to finish it.

Ooops that came out wrong  ;D ;D

A simple solution would be to allow for posting an extra entry 26-30 June if
it is for the Summer Comp.

The only downside that I can see is that those who posted their songs before
June 16 will miss one posting opportunity in their lives. I find that a reasonable
sacrifice from my part.

Yep I agree ... rules are there to be broken when it comes to music ... I think Neil C is the original ringmaster on this comp?  Neil?
Title: Re: Open Summer Beach competition
Post by: PaulAds on June 25, 2017, 01:19:49 PM
I may be wrong, but I think competition entries are separate from the 14-day limit for finished songs?

Title: Re: Open Summer Beach competition
Post by: Binladeda on June 26, 2017, 08:10:21 AM

Competition entries have never been included in the 'Two Week Rule' before.
I don't think anything has changed.....

Title: Re: Open Summer Beach competition
Post by: adamfarr on June 26, 2017, 12:03:22 PM
Surely that must be right - if you haven't posted your entry yet then you should be able to do so this week no matter how long ago your last (other) song was posted.

Shall we simply go with that?
Title: Re: Open Summer Beach competition
Post by: PaulyX on June 26, 2017, 01:06:12 PM
It's cool with me too, but just noting that further up this thread (May 21st) it said entries would be part of the 14 day quota (when I asked).
I don't think anything should get in the way of hearing more great tracks though... I'm sure no one will mind. I guess the 14 day convention is just to stop anyone spamming the boards with their own stuff and I'm sure no one will do that.
Title: Re: Open Summer Beach competition
Post by: CaliaMoko on June 26, 2017, 03:08:20 PM
Ok...then, assuming I get it done in time, which I plan to do one way or another, I'll post it and then wait at least 14 days after I should have posted it before I post another one.

Is there a list yet of the songs so far? I've been trying to find all the entries to date. I have 15 on my list. Am I missing any? Mine isn't in yet. And I know I saw a lyric marked for this challenge but I don't think I've seen the finished version of that one yet either.

Just wanted to say sorry guys, didn't manage to get an entry in for this. Time has just got the better of me this month.

I've got my song written in my head, just didn't get it down.

Maybe next year if it happens again.

Good luck all

Hi all. Just wanted to say a massive thanks to everyone who has entered the Summer / Beach competition.  I've spent some time over the weekend listening to all the songs and there is an incredible amount of diversity and imagination. As there's a long list of songs I wanted to do a "Highlight" of a couple of songs a day over a two week period. Thing is, I'm away this week so that won't start until next weekend.  No hurry to get your votes in just enjoy the wonderful music on this forum. More news soon  :). ps. If you do decide to vote before then, please pm Neil and myself with your top 3

Right...just want to confirm then that we are voting for top 3.....PJ just said so but everything prior to that suggests voting only for one...

Rule 6. Anybody can vote for their top song, all entrants must cast a vote for their song to be eligible....

...so is it one or top three?

But as soon as I log in & see how many there are, I despair & log out.
I am very sorry.

I don't remember there previously being a rule that you have to review all the songs, just to listen to them and make a reasoned vote.

Sometimes it is the thought of having to make a constructive and 'nice' review on a song that doesn't really appeal to you in any way that causes time-consuming mental problems.....better not to comment at all perhaps than spend ages racking your brain for something to say then just adding another meaningless review like 'Nice one....loved it'.

Tina, just give the songs a listen and comment only if you feel moved to do so. then you can make your vote and still be in the running. Nobody is going to object to that surely.

Yep please don't disappear completely Tina, like a lot of people here I look forward to your insightful (& funny) posts and especially your kick-ass tracks.  I don't remember a rule you have to comment on every track in the comp either so just kick back & enjoy.

Thank you guys thats very sweet of you :)
I know theres no rule to say you have to review every song...
I meant Im a commited member here & I would expect to listen to every entry if I was entering the competition. As I wont be, I dont feel I should be in the comp.
I havent given up music, I just felt I wanted a break from this forum that I do really love!
It expects certain things of you if youre committed to it, one of those is constant reviewing of songs & the other is that its a songwriter forum & I want to write other things than songs ... at the moment!
I will definitely be back ok, in a month or two, & I hope you will all still be here becos I will miss you :)

Secondly and the reason I've been drawn to post here is just to stay what a tough time I am having choosing just 3 from such a great selection of songs. In all honesty some of these deserve radio time!! Some really great music...thank you all for sharing!

Pomps wins with a fantastic song! I loved that one from the moment I heard it...it set the bar so high, I wondered how anyone else could even come close...but the amount of great entries was staggering.

Well done to Paulski too...a brilliant effort.

An amazing showcase for the forum...and I'm really chuffed to be anywhere near the top 3 in such great company.

Great hosting job too!

And I'd say that the competition really brought out some creativity and some songs that wouldn't otherwise have got written, so brilliant all round.

This is the first seasonal forum comp I've been able to take part in and while I'm not a big fan of music comps per se,the fact there is a target to write to can be inspirational in itself.
